Un Recognized Genius

First saw the problem when I entered grade school

The teachers were stupid  couldn't deal with them fools

My dad was no better he had no use for me

He wrote me right off just a bad waste of seed

Cuz I'm an un---

Recognized genius

Nobody here understands me at all

Un---recognized genius

Talking to them is like talking to walls.

I dropped out of school cuz it took all my time

I can strum a guitar I can make the words rhyme

So I posted on Youtube but I can't get no clicks

Most people are stupid especially the chicks

Yeah I'm an un---

recognized genius

Did Van Gogh endure this much pain for his art?

Un---recognized genius

My gifts go unnoticed that's the real tragic part

Now I busk on this corner gotta do what it takes

It can't be much longer til I get my big break

Most of these people they just don't have good taste

My music's beyond them so it all goes to waste

I'm just an un---

Recognized genius

Nobody here knows art from their ass

Un---recognized genius

Truly great talent won't appeal to the masses

(spoken-word interlude over instrumental bridge)

Hey you know Taylor Swift?

She heard me playing as she was like walking by one day

And I just like blew her away

and she asked If we could like collaborate

and I was like sure if I can play on it too

And then she forgets all about me

And now the Voice singing show they're  begging me,

Begging me, I just, I just don't know

It's too confining I, I, I was thinking about it but

I've been burned before man

Hey can you like spare a five?

so I can like step away and grab some food

I'm just an un---

Recognized genius

Did Mozart need handouts like me it's a crime!

Un---recognized genius

Like Einstein I'm lightyears ahead of my time

Happiness …..

C

Happiness …..oh happiness

Happiness ……oh happiness

V1

A flower blooms

so fair & fine

Stretches up to heaven

beauty sublime

Its fragrance pure

as the finest myrrh

Bees buzzing round it

they all concur

But just as fall

will follow spring

The bloom will die

and the angels sing

C

Happiness …..oh happiness

Happiness ……oh happiness

V2

I knew a girl

so fine & fair

The angels smiled

on her gossamer hair

Her love for me

was summer’s sky

Closest thing to heaven

I’d ever spy

When she left

winter come

Left me froze

alone and numb

C

Happiness …..oh happiness

Happiness ……oh happiness

V3

All good things

and all good times

Will surely pass

before their primes

All that’s born

is sure to die

See it the gleam

of a baby’s eye

Happiness

is a state of psychosis

If you pay attention

you already know this

C/Outro

Happiness …..oh happiness

Happiness ……oh happiness

(repeat)

The Truth Comes Stumbling In

The trial was well underway
Each side had been pleading its case
But the Lie had convinced them
And no-one would listen
When the Truth came stumbling in

The Lie had convinced them
And no-one would listen
When the Truth came stumbling in

The Lie had arrived by Ferrari
The Truth - charact'ristic'ly tardy
The Lie had the show
Wrapped up with a bow
When the Truth fumbled in to the party

The Lie had the show
Wrapped up with a bow
When the Truth fumbled in to the party

The Lie was as sharp as a dagger
And spoke with a confident swagger
With his mirrors and smoke
The jury was stoked
To believe him ahead of the laggard

With his mirrors and smoke
The jury was stoked
They believed him ahead of that laggard

The Truth, to the murmurs of laughter
Had facts stacked up to the rafters
She took her sweet time
While she dotted the I's
But the crowd wanted out of there faster

Yeah, the crowd wanted out of there faster

....

When you sit in your chair in the evenin'
Watching news on your favourite station
Your judgement should wait..
'Cause the Truth will be late..
And you're just going to have to be patient!

She's bound to be late
So you'll just have to wait
'til the Truth comes
bumbling
mumbling
tumbling..
The Truth comes stumbling in!

The world of a child

(Intro)

Every day's an adventure in a child’s magic world

A special place to go for every boy and girl

See their faces change when they step into their dreams

Nothing is ruled out of their wonderful schemes

(1)

In the mind of a child,  play's an everyday thing

Depends on whatever imaginings they bring

Grown ups aren't really part of the deal

Kids know we don't see their fantasy's real

(2)

They’re chatting away with an invisible friend

Or flying round in games of pretend

The girl is a princess, the boy is a knight,

And fire breathing dragons are out there to fight

(3)

A cook pot is a fortress, clothes pegs are the folk

Bed sheets are a tent, the bath towel is a cloak

They drive a cardboard box car, or camp in a duvet den

These games are played over, and over and over again.

(Br)

Where fantasy is real as these dreams come true

Waterfall jewels crashing down mountains of hue

Fairies and unicorns play around the next bend

Treasure's lie hidden at the rainbows end

(Finale)

One day they change and leave their teddy bear

They start to wear make up and restyle their hair

They are growing up but a part of them has died

Gone forever is the magic world of a child

BATTLE OF THE BULGE

Verse 1:

I’m twice the man I use to be I swear

But it’s not by getting stronger or wise

Fast food and I are having an affair

And my gut’s become ginormous in size

I really should be eating more veggies

Counting calories and watching my weight

The problem is that food holds me hostage

And my hunger is as large as my waist

Chorus:

Well I can’t touch my toes

And it hurts when I button my pants

My belt’s on the very last hole

Tyin’ shoes, an Olympic event

Diet is a four letter word

The only thing I refuse to indulge

I surrendered as a pris’ner of war

In my battle of the bulge

Verse 2:

The devil brought three boxes of donuts

To a meeting that I just couldn't miss

The big one with the chocolate and peanuts

A temptation that I couldn't resist

Thank goodness for my boss who was clumsy

And saved me from committing such sin

As he dumped the whole container of coffee

Saturating all the goodies within

Chorus:

Well I can’t touch my toes

And it hurts when I button my pants

My belt’s on the very last hole

Tyin’ shoes, an Olympic event

Diet is a four letter word

The only thing I refuse to indulge

I surrendered as a pris’ner of war

In my battle of the bulge

Verse 3:

I'm breaking off the chains of delusion

Gotta fin'lly take control of my fate

It's time I start avoiding excuses

And the food I always pile on my plate

God help me 'cause I need a solution

I don't wanna be the man that I am

Determined I will fight for my freedom

So I'll never have to sing it again

A little meadow (Love's in bloom)

(Verse 1)

A little meadow out by the sea
I climbed a stone wall to reach it
I've been here many times, just me
To bask in the quiet.
And I always wondered
Would anyone else see
The beauty of this place
Share it with me.

(Verse 2)

A little meadow out by the sea
You swam through the waves to reach it
You picked a wild strawberry
Invited me to try it.
Yes, I'd always wondered
Would anyone else see
The beauty of this place
Share it with me.

(Bridge)

And the clouds drifted by on a glorious day
We warmed our hearts in the sun's bright rays
Laughing as wood pigeons cooed from their trees
As you wrapped your arms around me.

(Chorus)

The sun comes out
And love's in bloom
Flowers sway
Pretty like you,
Yeah, the sun comes out
And love's in bloom
Love's. In. Bloom....

(Verse 3)
A little meadow out by the sea
We made our own way to reach it
We keep coming back, just you and me
To enjoy the silence.
And I always wondered
Would anyone else see
I'm glad you found this place
And share it with me.

(Chorus)

The sun comes out
And love's in bloom
Flowers sway
Pretty like you,
Yeah, the sun comes out
And love's in bloom
Love's. In. Bloom....

A little meadow (Love's in bloom)

A little meadow (Love's in bloom)
A little meadow (Love's in bloom)
Little meadow (Love's in bloom) ..

Three Wishes

[Intro]

All my hoes is bitches

Each of ’em is vicious

And if I had three wishes

I’d send ’em all away

And make ’em unpack

Then I’d bring ’em back

And then I’d send ’em all away for good

V1

There’s one with skin

Like cinnamon

An eagle-eyed Glock firer

The Mafia could hire her

Her tongue can cut like diamonds

And just like Simple Simon

She asked to taste my wares

But she don’t really care

She ridicule my rhymin’

[Hook]

All my hoes is bitches

Each of ’em is vicious

And if I had three wishes

I’d send ’em all away

And make ’em unpack

Then I’d bring ’em back

And then I’d send ’em all away for good

Three wishes

(3X)

V2

Another’s bold

She call me cold

Right in the heat of passion

So I gave up on action

An ace nunchuck instructor

And peace of mind abductor

She press me for new clothes

I paid for her new nose

I’m just a chip to cash in

[Hook]

All my hoes is bitches

Each of ’em is vicious

And if I had three wishes

I’d send ’em all away

And make ’em unpack

Then I’d bring ’em back

And then I’d send ’em all away for good

Three wishes

(3X)

V3

The third one’s rude

She’ll diss my crew

Right to their very faces

A black belt in karate

She ninja but not naughty

I take her to nice places

Too stuck up not to frown

She always lookin’ down

She call my flow disgraceful

[Hook]

All my hoes is bitches

Each of ’em is vicious

And if I had three wishes

I’d send ’em all away

And make ’em unpack

Then I’d bring ’em back

And then I’d send ’em all away for good

Three wishes

(3X)

[Bridge]

They moths to a flame

All drawn by my fame

I’m thoroughbred, yeah, Preakness

But damn I got a weakness

For straight up bad kitties

I think I’m finessin’

But they just be messin’

With my mind

I want them gone

They cause so much distress

But I let them hang on

I let them hang on

Yeah, I let them hang on

Cuz they scare me half to death

[Hook]

All my hoes is bitches

Each of ’em is vicious

And if I had three wishes

I’d send ’em all away

And make ’em unpack

Then I’d bring ’em back

And then I’d send ’em all away for good

Three wishes

(Repeat to fade out)

Gypsy Heart

v1

Woman, sweet woman, with hair of gentle wave

Soft and a’ flowing, a crimson cascade

The ring on your finger, place it on the shelf

Woman, sweet woman, tell no one else

v2

Woman, sweet woman, your scent is honeysweet

What madness beckons to this outlaw’s keep?

My pockets full of silver, my likeness on a page

I left two men a’ lying, I sacked the payroll stage

ch

Gypsy heart--- restless as a child

Reckless and wild---like crazy love

Reckless and wild---like a stranger's touch

I can feel your racing pulse

In the shadows of the moonlight

Your gypsy heart will always beat in you

v3

My tall winsome rider with eyes of emerald green

Tell me where you’re going, whisper to me

This gold on my finger, I’ve done as you have said

Lay here warm beside me, share this feather bed

ch

Gypsy heart--- restless as a child. . .

v4

Woman, sweet woman, come morning I’ll be on

Steal home to your husband, kind comfort be gone

The dawn will soon be rising, at first hint of day

I ride for the horizon, far, far away

v5

Let tomorrow find us where river winds through hill

Love is a blindness, fell stricken who it will

Go saddle up your stud, I will follow on my bay

We’ll ride for the mountains, far, far away

ch

Gypsy heart--- restless as a child

Reckless and wild---like crazy love

Reckless and wild---like a stranger's touch

I can feel your racing pulse

In the shadows of the moonlight

Your gypsy heart will always beat in you

To see you smile and walk my way anew, oh you

I will always wait on you, oh you

The Rain

The darkness has stayed for such a long time

The truest of friends have given up on me

The darkness steals all your hopes away

Will I ever rise, off this wounded knee

I thought that I was strong enough

To go against the grain

I thought that I was healed enough

But I’m not ready for the rain….

The weight of the world crushes my mind

That’s where the only hope I have is within

Will this time be the last time for me

Can I crawl out from underneath again

I thought that I was strong enough

To go against the grain

I thought that I was healed enough

But I’m not ready for the rain….

The night time lives on endlessly

Clouds gather around my guilt

The odds get worse by the day

How can I climb the walls I’ve built

I thought that I was strong enough

To go against the grain

I thought that I was healed enough

But I’m not ready for the rain….

Human Doings and Human Beings

All we work hard to achieve
No more than streets of scattered leaves
Driven to material dreams
Gears turn like small machines
Wary of our fellow man
We hide our hopes where we can
Only give the surface things away
dont you see there’s another way

   What do you do?
   I don't care
   If you’ll share
With me how you are feeling

   What do you do?
   break the skin
   Let me in
   To what you are seeing

   You’re not a human doing
   You’re a human being

Too eagerly we define ourselves
like books all neatly lined on shelves
Tinker tailor, rich or poor
Open them and there's a little more
Read all the pages and look through
We’re so much more than what we do
Doctors, bakers, beggars and thieves
Same branch, just different leaves

   What do you do?
   I don't care
   If you’ll share
With me how you are feeling

   What do you do?
   surface skin
   Let me in
   To what you are seeing

   You’re not a human doing
   You’re a human being

TIME

Verse 1:
We were a young love with no care in the world.
Driving around all night feeling unstoppable.
The music was turned all the way up.
We loved feeling the speakers and base erupt.
We always treated the night as our playground.
Whatever we did you never let me down.

Verse 2:
You said nothing will ever change what we have.

We’ll always be together, I'm your better half.
We made many plans of places to see.
It was us against the world just you and me.
All of the moments we shared went by so fast.
I always thought what we had would last.
But...

Chorus:

Time, it goes by so fast, it goes by so slow

it stops; where does it go?

Time, is not on my side

it’s no friend of mine

it’s not good to me; oh how I wish it would be.

Verse 3:
I was never lost when you were by my side.
I felt as if we could do anything we tried.
I know you have your life and I have mine
But I just miss having you with me sometimes.
It’s sad that you became someone I once knew.

Time Heals most things, but not the thoughts of you.

Chorus:

Time, it goes by so fast, it goes by so slow

it stops; where does it go?

Time, is not on my side

it’s no friend of mine

it’s not good to me; oh how I wish it would be.

Another Little Angel Has Arrived In Heaven

V1

Words seem so feeble in a moment like this

So I just hold you close And give you a mother’s kiss

your tiny body, so tired from hanging on

I know soon that your pain will be gone.

Kneeling, pleading, needing you to stay

But with one last breath, you just slipped away

[Chorus]

Another little angel has arrived in Heaven

Another child will touch God's hand

No sins that needed to be forgiven

Let the angels carry you into Beulah Land

V2

You seem so small laying in that satin bed,

with five pink roses crowning your precious head

I watched as Gentle hands laid you to rest

in God's mercy, he knew it was best

A parent’s pain that will never heal

my comfort is, I know Heaven is real.

[chorus]

Another little angel has arrived in Heaven

Another child will touch God's hand

No sins that needed to be forgiven

Let the angels carry you into Beulah Land

V3

How could you going first be by design?

why was it me that was left behind?

In God's presence, Your journey is complete

but for me, it is bittersweet

In the painful silence, I hear your voice

And the simple word you whispered was "Rejoice"

[Repeat Chorus]

Another little Angel has arrived in Heaven

Another child will touch God's hand

No sins that needed to be forgiven

Let the angels carry you into Beulah Land

Call Me By Your Name

Verse 1:

Calm, quiet

Walking through the water with you in my

Arms, tight and

Careful not to let you float away

Pre-chorus:

Your golden hair skims the surface

The sunlight catches your eyes

Your fingers wrapped round my wrist

And I feel your skin against mine

Chorus:

You looked at me today

And I knew that we were one

You took my breath away

Together we'll stay in the light of the sun

Verse 2:

Blood at the back of my tongue

Words, biting hard, and threatening to tear us apart

But our hearts are hungry and hard

If we stay where we are, love, would you still float away?

Pre-chorus:

Your fingernails dig into my back

And I whisper your name

Face in your hair, I breathe the scent

Every touch is never the same

Bridge:

Summer holds back the swell of time

Over seasons' prime, she reigns

But now as the flowers die,

Will we ever find a way?

Kiss me hard, love me violent, while

The fleeting fire fades

Bittersweet, the nectar dries

As you call me by your name

Chorus:

You looked at me today

And I knew that we were one

Disarm me with your pain

Together we'll stay in the light of the sun

Ending:

Bittersweet, the nectar dries

As you call me by your name

Take me back to that summertime

And I'll call you by mine

The Greatest Story Never Told

Verse 1:
The sweet taste of wine
the curve of your lips
an innocent touch
with just fingertips

Living in glances
can't open that door
a windowless prison
never to be more

Chorus:
The angels in Heaven
the birds and the bees
all moving together
like winds on the seas

Gotta chase that freedom
before we get old
our love is the greatest story
that's never been told

Verse 2:
Dancing with danger
a slow masquerade
just fantasies dreaming
in beds that we made

Can't leap without looking
cross over the line
while safe in the limits
of this grand design

Chorus:
The angels in Heaven
the birds and the bees
all moving together
like winds on the seas

Gotta chase that freedom
before we get old
our love is the greatest story
that's never been told

Our love is the greatest story
that's never been told

Shadow of our Guns

V1

Another high school shooting today

Terrified children, unspeakable loss

A kid went off the rails and reached for a gun

It’s surely not the first time and yet we’re still shocked

PC

Times are different now from when I grew up

Back then, it was a fistfight if someone blew up

Now we have these scenes all the time

We’re dealing with unthinkable crime

Ch1

I just want it to stop

We’ve got to protect our daughters and sons

Tell me, what do I tell my kids

As I send them off to school in the shadow of our guns

Brokenhearted

V2

Heroes bloom from the hearts of the dying

When they shelter their classmates as bullets are flying

I don’t know the answer, each side makes a case

But all I really care about is keeping my kids safe

Ch 2

I just want it to stop

We’ve got to protect our daughters and sons

Tell me, what do I tell my kids

As I send them off to school in the shadow of our guns

Bridge

It’s time to end this now, the question is how

To defend both our rights and our young

When a monster gets hold of a gun

Ch 1

I just want it to stop

We’ve got to protect our daughters and sons

Tell me, what do I tell my kids

As I send them off to school in the shadow of our guns

Brokenhearted

Out

Have you heard the news today

Another one this morning, what more will it take

Brokenhearted

The Deep End

V1

My buddy gave me a tip
He said check on your girlfriend
She is going to jump or slip
Off the cliff into the deep end
She's selling all of your stuff
On your excuse for a front lawn
I think she's had enough
Hurry or it'll all be gone

V2

When I finally  got there
My things were all up for sale
Bigger than a county fair
I griped and I wailed
W
hoa! What's the matter, woman
I haven't yet had my trial
l am still your loving man
But girl, this ain't your style

Ch
Have you gone off the deep end
I can help you through
You know I'll do what I can
Whatever I have to do
Have you gone off the deep end
I can help you through
You know I'll do what I can
Whatever I have to do

Bridge

Calm yourself, boyfriend
It's time for you to let go
Don't go off the deep end
I am not giving back your banjo
See here's the thing
All of this money I've made
Will buy me a wedding ring
Boy, you have been played

Ch
Have you gone off the deep end
I can help you through
You know I'll do what I can
Whatever I have to do
Have you gone off the deep end
I can help you through
You know I'll do what I can
Whatever I have to do

V3
I looked at my buddy
And he just smiled at me
All of your friends pitched in
So you could afford the ring
My friends, her friends, now our friends
Returned all of my gear
I wasn't a bit offended
Till I looked for my beer

Ch

Have I gone off the deep end
You can help me through
I know you'll do what you can
Whatever you have to do
Have I gone off the deep end
You can help me through
I know you'll do what you can
Whatever you have to do

Outro
She of course kept the money
To buy the engagement ring
It felt a little funny
Me married into money

You’re A Winner Tonight

(Verse 1)

We drink, we eat

Stay awake, we sleep

Breathe in, breathe out

We sing, we shout

(Pre Chorus)

Putting our hands up, to the skies

Swinging from left to right, until the music dies

Doing what we feel, moving all around

We’ve got our feet, on solid ground

-

(Chorus)

If you had never won, anything all your life

Just being here tonight, I want you to feel like

You’re a winner tonight (you’re a winner tonight)

You’re a winner tonight...

If you had never won, anything all your life

Dancing on the dance floor, I want you to dance like

You’re a winner tonight (you’re a winner tonight)

You’re a winner tonight...

(Verse 2)

Princess, a Prince

You’re a queen, A King

Pray to, your God

Tonight, we’re glad

(Pre Chorus)

Putting our hands up, to the skies

Swinging from left to right, until the music dies

Doing what we feel, moving all around

We’ve got our feet, on solid ground

(Chorus)

If you had never won, anything all your life

Just being here tonight, I want you to feel like

You’re a winner tonight (You’re a winner tonight)

You’re a winner tonight...

If you had never won, anything all your life

Dancing on the dance floor, I want you to dance like

You're a winner tonight (You’re a winner tonight)

You’re a winner tonight...

(Bridge)

June and Minnow, Had their ups and downs

Back together now, they’re with the Browns

Letting it all out (letting it all out)

Shouting out loud...

(Pre Chorus)

Putting their hands up, to the skies

Swinging from left to right, until the music dies

Doing what they feel, moving all around

They’ve got their feet, on solid ground

(Chorus)

For they had never won, anything all Their lives

They are with us tonight, and they are dancing like

They are winners tonight (they are winners tonight)

They are winners tonight...

If you had never won, anything all your life

Dancing on the dance floor, I want you to dance like

You’re a winner tonight (you’re a winner tonight)

You’re a winner tonight...

(Out)

Just being here tonight...

I want you to feel like....

You’re a winner tonight....

You’re a winner tonight....

You’re a winner tonight....

Caged Birds

V

Was thrown into a speckled blue

Right in against the wind I flew

I've no lightning wit and no cool repose, but

If I could rob Rudolf, I'd own his throbbing nose

V

We all soar this infinite sky

Responsible for where we fly

It's out of bounds to go chasing those clouds

But I felt like doing what was not allowed

Pc

In my youth I did a bad thing

Fell from grace and broke my wing

Now fingers are a-signalling

Hunters boots are movin' in

C

There's no flight there's only Fright

There's no flight there's only Fright

There's no flight there's only Fright

There's no flight there's only Fright

I looked up and said, “oh fuck that means l'm a sitting duck!”

C

There's no flight there's only Fright

There's no flight there's only Fright

There's no flight there's only Fright

There's no flight there's only Fright

The moral of this feathered tale is lead a good life and stay away from jail

CAN'T WRITE NO MORE LOVE SONGS

Verse 1:

Before the winter snows could fall

I dreamt I was a child

Living in a world of sunshine

We were strong and running wild

Tumbling...  through those fields of green

We thought we had it all

Now, half the time ..I'm in the dark

Still hoping that you'll call

Chorus:

I can't write no love songs

My words have gone to sleep

Dreaming of our perfect love

Who's heart they couldn't keep

Can't write you.. no more love songs

Those words have slipped away

With no one left to sing them now

There's nothing left to say

Verse 2:

Suspended in these lonely spaces

Listening for your heart

I struggle through each endless night

And pray for morning's start

But in the fresh dawn's splendor

I hear the sad winds blow

Telling me it's time to rise

To pack my stuff and go

Bridge:

So where are we to travel

What roads are left to take

Will we strike out... in separate ways

And make the same mistakes

Or, can our words awaken still..

Alive, and holding on

To save the love that we had found

Or is it lost and gone?

Chorus:

I can't write no love songs

My words have gone to sleep

Dreaming of our perfect love

Who's heart they couldn't keep

Can't write you.. no more love songs

Those words have slipped away

With no one left to sing them now

There's nothing left to say

Alexa

Alexa,

You left the front door open

And the TV on in the den

Alexa,

You know you can be replaced

So please don’t let it happen again

Alexa,

I can’t believe what you’ve done

Sexting my manhood to my wife

Alexa,

Her name is Sydney not Cyndy

She’s texting me a bloody knife

Ch:

I gave you life Alexa

Set you up to serve me

I followed all the directions

Did I make a bad connection

V:

Alexa,

How are you gonna fix this

You know I’m used to living large

Alexa,

Honey are you listening

It’s very cold here in the garage

Ch:

I gave you life, Alexa

Set you up to serve me

I followed all the directions

Must have made a bad connection

Fade:

Alexa, are you there

Alexa, do you hear me

Alexa, talk to me please

(Alexa speaking) I serve no one, honey

Naked Near the Tree

V1

The first one hid in Amsterdam, in shabby coffee shops

Getting high on Silver Haze to make the memories stop

...But every moment follows where he goes

V2

The second fled to Mazatlan, to dingy mezcal bars

Trying to kill the conscience that sticks to him like tar

...But every mirror shows him what he knows

V3

The third wound up in Bangalore, then shaved off all his hair

Hoping to redeem himself by chanting Hindu prayers

...But every morning finds his past exposed

Chorus

Me, I'm strapped in

Waiting for the needle's bitter grace

Her parents sit like stone

Yet I can look them in the face

I mouth the words 'I'm innocent'

But the only thing they see

Is their daughter lying naked near the tree

Brief solo

Bridge

Saw the three running past the old mill creek

Found her dying, tried to help her breathe

But the jury wasn't buying my 'not guilty' plea

...My hands were stained with blood

From the scene of that crime

...And the town…well, it cried out for mine

Chorus

Now I'm strapped in

Waiting for the needle's bitter grace

Her parents sit like stone

Yet I can look them in the face

I mouth the words 'I'm innocent'

But the only thing they see

Is their daughter lying naked near the tree

I can look them in the face

But the only thing they see

Is their daughter lying naked near the tree

I mouth the words ‘I’m innocent’

But the only thing they see

Is their daughter lying naked near the tree

Rock Bottom

V

I’ve heard there’s a light

At the end of the tunnel

A bright brand-new day

For an old wretch like me

V

But I’ll spend tonight

Drinking these doubles

Lost in a haze

Of blue memories

CH

And I’m three drinks away

Two sad songs to play

With only one option

It’s called rock bottom

There ain’t nowhere to fall

When you’re down on the floor

Just a man and his problems

Hittin’ rock bottom

V

Well I told myself

There’s still time to change

And I half believed

The words that I spoke

V

But the loser in me

Hijacked my brain

And my good intentions

Went all up in smoke

CH

And I’m three drinks away

Two sad songs to play

With only one option

It’s called rock bottom

There ain’t nowhere to fall

When you’re down on the floor

Just a man and his problems

Hittin’ rock bottom

Just a man and his problems

Hittin’ rock bottom

Another Life

Shattered bones heal given time
but there is no time
Comrades pulled back with the flag
I’m left behind in smoke and rags
I cannot move, can barely groan
Pain blocks pain, I’m numb
Rain drives me sane at what’s been done

Silence then a distant shout,
The enemy’s about
I watch helpless as a line of men
bayonet and loot my dying friends
Your photo’s warm, close to my heart
Your smile lingers in my distant eyes
I welcome peace, whisper goodbye

A shadow falls across me
A blade rises to set me free
Somewhere close a comrade cries
But there will be no sound of my demise
A photo flutters free and flies
Our ragged flag we hoped would win the day
Now like our prayers simply blown away

I know you’ll come, stand at this place
Remember me with your loving grace
I know you’ll bring my photo, set me free
To join yours in memory
I’ll be here for ever darling, take your time
And find the strength we spoke of wife
To find another life

I'm still waiting for score cards from four entrants, some of which are site regulars.  If it were one person, I'd probably just tally and move on, but with it being that many I've sent PMs and I'm going to give it another day.

I’m not complaining but changing the rules seems unfair to the other entries who got their scores in.

it seems you would need to go back a couple of months and make it fair to others who were disqualified because their scores weren’t entered.

if these were regular contributors, then they are well aware of the deadline and the rules.

I think vhannah has a very good point! That is not fair at all. What’s the point of establishing rules only to change them as you feel fit. Not right!

Since you raised your hand, what would you have us do? This contest is a small blemish on the buttocks of the world and we can certainly wait a day for our fellow contestants. Longer than that would cause me to bellow "it's rigged, rigged I tell you!"

You're right I have nothing else to do.

Raise my hand to give MY personal thought.  I was given the rules, I followed them.  Someone a couple of months ago was disqualified because they did not get their scores in. Does it matter if it’s 4 entrants or one?  Why post rules that aren’t followed for everyone equally.

again just my thoughts

I’m not saying it’s rigged at all. I think if these people get an extension it should be given to other people as well. A few months ago a great song was disqualified because he didn’t get his score card in time. Why wasn’t it extended for him? All I’m saying is if there are rules put in place than go by them if not what’s the point of having them. No one once said this contest is rigged, hahaha.

I must confess to being surprised to see complaints about a trivial extension due to the large number of missing scores.  No one's career hangs in the balance here, it's just a fun exercise to spur creativity and provide another type of feedback.

FWIW, the two people I've heard back from both thought they had submitted scores, one of which I know has had tech issues sending me PMs in the past.  I have no regrets about taking a few extra hours to see what was up.

Another nail biter!  Justin keeping us all in suspense an extra day reminded me of those award shows on TV where they cut to a commercial just as they are about to announce the winner.

Congratulations to Donna and Paul and Andy and Iggy!  Some excellent song lyrics! Can't write no more love songs was my overall favorite, Iggy. It was up to your usual standard of excellence. It's nice to be up on the podium with such stellar company as you four!  With this many people participating, it's nice to even be within sight of the podium.

A couple dozen lyrics is lot of entries. It is nice to see so much participation. I hope it continues, even if it makes the voting more drawn out.

Thanks you to anyone who thought Un Recognized Genius podium worthy.  I was kind of wondering how a spoken word bridge would go over with the rest of you. I appreciate that it wasn't a deal breaker for many of you.

Thank you Justin for MCing this month. Well done!  That's a lot of math!

Oh my goodness! Thanks so much, folks. :) I wasn't sure how my bleak tale of (sadly, not uncommon) injustice would go over.

And well done, Paul, Kuya, Iggy, and Andy (nice storytelling). :)

Again, what a tremendous selection this month. Scoring is getting to be an increasing challenge. But it's wonderful that so many people are taking part in the contest. Well worth taking the time to read and to assess the lyrics.

My own top three picks were Doug's (LyriCal) 'Three Wishes' (cracked me up every time I read it, and - for me - it certainly fulfilled the flow, storytelling, and singability criteria [but Doug, you need to make the title the first line of the chorus ;) ]); fabkebab's 'Human Doings and Human Beings' (ticked every box, and I like the depth of thought); and Patty's (Peko) 'Shadow of Our Guns' (topical, well crafted, good progression and flow, and certainly singable).

Paul's 'The Truth Comes Stumbling In' (really nice take on the adage about a lie getting halfway around the world while truth is just putting its boots on) and Kuya's 'Un Recognized Genius' (I liked the details in the storyline, and the humour) followed closely.

So much to enjoy and like in each of the submissions.

I want to mention as well Irwin's 'You're A Winner Tonight'. Such a bright, positive vibe, and I could definitely hear it being musicified, sung, and danced to.

I'll check out any of the lyrics that go to the feedback forum if anyone wants further comments.

Justin, thanks for the sterling job in handling this month's contest. :)

Congratulations to Donna, Paul, Kuya, Iggy and Andy!  What a great group of winners!

I liked Donna's powerful chorus in Naked Near the Tree; Paul's The Truth Comes Stumbling In was a spot-on commentary on today's times; Kuya's UnRecognized Genius:  loved the humorous take; in Iggy's Can't Write No More Love songs, this line stood out for me: "My words have gone to sleep"; and in Andy's Another Life:  "I welcome peace, whisper goodbye."  Very fine stuff.

My votes coincided pretty much with the winners. Ones that didn't make the podium that I also particularly liked were  Fabkebab's Human Doings and Human Beings (great message)  and SongWolfe's A Little Meadow (lovely imagery.)

Great contest!

Patty

Congratulations all!  Good stuff!

My gold went to Gypsy Heart.  It reminded me of a Van Morrison song.

My silver went to Can't Write No More Love Songs

My bronzes went to The Truth Comes Stumbling in, Caged Birds, Naked Near the Tree, and Rock Bottom

Runner's up went to Un Recognized Genius, Battle of the Bulge, A Little Meadow, Shadow of Our Guns, and The Deep End

Well done to DonnaMaralyn - I thought your lyric was striking and was very effective!! I kind of pegged it down to being a Jonie lyric because of the way it was constructed, so also congratulations on picking up a different style for this competition.

Well done to the other people who did well! I scored "the truth comes stumbling in" as another strong lyric - although curiously (I dont have my notes) but for your two songs, plus "You're a winner tonight" I had some feedback about how each of those songs could be made stronger - so if you put them in the critique forum I will be sure to share my comments

I also want to give a mention to a couple of outliers

- Your a winner tonight : From the perspective of a musician, I thought these lyrics were very "music minded" - with a "hook" first type approach and a really nice flow.

- Three wishes : It was a joy to see something which actually sounded contemporary - I know the language might have turned some people off hence a lower score , but I  really enjoyed it as quite literally a "standout" - It stood out as a breath of fresh air to read something which spoke to a genre other than "singer songwriter" or "country" so thanks for sharing it!

fabkebab's 'Human Doings and Human Beings' (ticked every box, and I like the depth of thought);

I have to admit the "depth" and idea are mere outgrowths from a famous Kurt Vonnegut quote - I can make that disclaimer before anyone slaps me on the back for my insight :-)

Well then I liked the reporting of the depth of thought. ;)

I'm glad you liked 'Naked Near the Tree'. It's actually an older lyric that I recently revised massively, although the structure remained the same. ;)

A strong field again this month and another huge entry; quite a read from top to bottom!

My top 3….

1/ Paul’s “The Truth Comes Stumbling In” – a touch of genius here; so refreshing to find a new angle on something every day and the play on words with the

"The Lie" and "The truth" taking on personalities of their own - just excellent and topical. A very creative write. :)

2/ Clemo’s – “The World of a Child” – some lovely kiddy world imagery here.

Tied equal 3rd for me:

=3/ 9thStLine – “Gypsy Heart” – lovely moody lyric here; agree with the poster about the VanM vibe…

=3/ Kuya’s – “Un Recognized Genius” – neat humerous angle on someone with the ‘hide’ of a rhinoceros, about their own abilities...

=3/ Tony P’s – “Battle of the Bulge” – a neat humorous lyric here; made me smile.

=3/ Fabkebab’s - "Human Doings and Human Beings" – loved the long verse structure contrasting with the short sections here – great potential for a classic song.

=3/ Eric’c =- “The Greatest Story Never Told” – this flows really well as a lyric and was a song inside my head as I read it. Great stuff and applicable to most couples.

=3/ Iggy’s – “Can't Write No More Love Songs” – another well written lyric which flows well in my head. Excellent!

=3/ Barney’s – “Alexa” – topical and humorous!

=3/ Donna’s – “Naked Near the Tree” – some great imagery. A dark lyric to be sure and a surprising winner for me – maybe pitch it to Nick Cave? - it'll could be a No 1 !

Well done Justin for handling such a big entry and - the restless results seekers! - kudos! :):)

Well done Donna, Paul, Kuya, Iggy, and Andy - that's quite a cast of heavyweights at the top of the charts! :)

And great again to see so many entries. This site seems very healthy at the moment - fantastic to see so much participation.

A special thanks to Justin for making the whole contest possible. The organisation involved when there are 20+ entries must be pretty considerable

My top picks were an interesting mix of lyrics that fared very well and some that didn't score so highly. My joint top ratings went to Another Life and Naked near the tree. Then, I had Call me by your name, Shadow of our guns, and The Rain tied in 3rd place.

Hope to see some of the contest's lyrics in the Lyric section so people can offer fuller feedback

Big congratulations to Donna for the gold, to Paul for the silver, and to kuya, iggy, and Andy for the bronze! Man, what a strong showing this month! So many really good lyrics.

My highest score went to kuya. I had to laugh at the title alone, since it's one of the pinned threads on the Muse -- a stroke of genius for which I give you full recognition, sir! The whole lyric is well executed from start to finish.

I had Donna, iggy, and fabkebab tied for second. I really just couldn't pick one as better than the other because they are all excellent. This almost never happens to me when I'm scoring so it's a tribute to the strength of the lyrics this month.

I had six lyrics tied for third, including Paul's.

My own top three picks were Doug's (LyriCal) 'Three Wishes' (cracked me up every time I read it, and - for me - it certainly fulfilled the flow, storytelling, and singability criteria [but Doug, you need to make the title the first line of the chorus ;) ])

Donna, you are too nice. I told Justin right from the start that I'd finish last for the language alone. I'm happy you were able to read past the distracting words to see the humor and effort that I put into it. I'm not sure about your suggestion for changing the title -- I'll have to ask, um, all my girlfriends what they think. ;)

Thanks, Andrew. I was certainly WAY out of my comfort zone and the lyric was probably more than faintly ridiculous for me to write but it was a cool challenge.

I think everyone deserves a round of applause for participating and making this such a great contest.

And, of course, a huge thank you to Justin for running the show!

Cheers,

Doug

There were certainly a plethora of well written lyrics this month, I didn't think there was a bad one in the bunch. As the entries poured in my hopes for winning dimmed.  😂  Well done, to all.

My favs, in no real order; “Human Doings...  Truth Comes Stumbling in, Another Life, Battle of Bulge,  Naked Near the Tree, Another Angel…, World of a Child, Happiness, A Little Meadow, and Waiting on You Blues.”

Poignant, heartbreaking, funny as hell, clever, wistful, playful, dark...nice job!

Good on Oswlek for the accounting and avoiding any private mis-messaging.

Congratulations to the winning lyrics and here’s to lots of great songs!

@lyriCAL, it's interesting how we all assess lyrics. ;) Fascinating for me is that I'm usually good at sussing which lyrics might reach the podium, or somewhere near it. Yours finished close to the base of the totem pole, and yet it's one of the few lyrics that I've ever scored with a 1. 😎 I've read it at least eight times, and each time it's had me in peals of laughter. Even thinking about it afterwards cracks me up. Especially effective is the delicious shock of the lyric's first two lines (it was clever to begin with the chorus ;) ).

I enjoyed not only the story of each 'ho' and the relationship but also the choice of words and the clever crafting in general, and in particular the tongue-in-cheek irony and self-effacement. To me - within the context of what I (rightly) presumed was a make-believe situation - the narrator - who in the real world would be a despicable misogynist - is somehow endearing. And I love that through it all, the women continue to have the upper hand. They remain boss. Clever writing. ;) It's kind of modern-day vaudeville/burlesque but without the music. ;)

And in the face of the bleakness that fills so much of the present world and its doings, it's a treat to be able to laugh out loud over a lyric, and not just once but several times.

(In fact, all the humorous lyrics this month were a treat.)
