Back On The Ground

Intro

I was just having fun never meant any harm

Grabbed my jacket and my good luck charm

There’s just no way that I’ll go there again

Fall back on the ground

Friday Night I was out on the run

With a lust for poker and a wild hair

I broke away but it was all in fun

It must be  -  I had a fever

My girl left me there

And I could not retrieve her

But then again I thought I could win

And all the fun I was having then

Turned around and I lost my skin

Now I’m back on the outside

And I’m looking in

Now I’m back on the ground

My girl came back after I begged for hours

I sold my watch, to buy her some flowers

One of these days I’m gonna win

There’s just no way I can go there again

Go back on the ground

I was just having fun

But it all turned around

I was up in the clouds

Then I crashed to the ground

My tainted luck

Had again been found

Every time I get close to winning

Fate comes around

And reminds me I’m sinning

Never thought I could do it again

Fall back on the ground

And all the fun I was having then

Turned upside down

And she left me again

Now I’m back on the ground

Chorus

I was just having fun never meant any harm

But soon found out it costs a leg and an arm

One of these days I’m gonna win

There’s just no way I can go there again

Fall back on the ground

Now I’m back on the ground

History Of My Broken Heart

Verse 1:
There's a piece of my soul
screaming to be heard
like the waves of an ocean
and the wings of a bird

Scarred from the battles
won't come out to play
saving all of my love
for a cold rainy day

Pre-Chorus:
I watch the happy couples
they walk hand in hand
as I fall through the hourglass
a tiny grain of sand

Chorus:
It's the history
of my broken heart
this falling in love
is tearing me apart

I can't take it anymore
just say goodbye
and close the door

Verse 2:
Once I was in love
now I keep it all in inside
when a relationship sours
a part of me dies

How do you walk away
and leave it all behind?
memories play like old movies
locked away deep in my mind

Pre-Chorus:
Building up the walls
do what it takes to survive
no more emotional pain
but I'm barely alive

Chorus:
It's the history
of my broken heart
this falling in love
is tearing me apart

I can't take it anymore
just say goodbye
and close the door

Outro:
It's the history
of my broken heart
this falling in love
is tearing me apart

I can't take it anymore
just say goodbye
and close the door

just say goodbye
and close the door

just say goodbye
and close the door

just say goodbye
and close the door

I'm Letting It All Go

Take the pain with you
And our memories too
Because tonight I'm letting go
I have nothing else to lose

(C)
I'm letting it all go
I'm Leaving it all behind
It feels like I'm breathing
for the very first time
I'm letting it all go

It's a new day a new dream
I'm ready to start over clean
I don't need you here with me
I'm letting go of what used to be

(C)
I'm letting it all go
I'm Leaving it all behind
It feels like I'm breathing
for the very first time
I'm letting it all go

I'm going to Forgive and forget
I Don't want to live with any regrets
I'm just working on the best of me
For the first time I'm feeling free

(C)
I'm letting it all go
I'm Leaving it all behind
It feels like I'm breathing
for the very first time
I'm letting it all go

I Don't Want To Dream Tonight

V1
I still remember your touch
And the smell of your old work shirt
I can't think of you without having it hurt

(Chorus)
I don't want to dream tonight
I don't want to turn out the light
If I can just stay awake
I'll be alright; I'll bre alright.

V2

You never come out of the shadows
But still, I know you're there
But darlin, you can't stay
We're just two lonely souls
That can't go back to yesterday
So....

(Chorus)
I don't want to dream tonight
I don't want to turn out the light
If I can just stay awake
I'll be alright; I'll be alright.

V3
I keep my mind occupied
Almost all day long
Sometimes I put in overtime
To make the 9-5 drag on
At home I got Netflix
To keep me company
I do anything I can
So I won't fall asleep... cause I don't want to dream tonight

chorus
I don't want to dream tonight
I don't want to turn out the light
If I can just stay awake
I'll be alright; I'll be alright.

Bridge
You said losing us is the
biggest regret we'll ever know
Darlin it's true, you are my broken dream
That refuses to let go
I know I'm dreaming
Just pretending
But still, I can't
change the ending
So...

Chorus
I don't want to dream tonight
I don't want to turn out the light
If I can just stay awake
I'll be alright; I'll be alright.

Catch Me On The Rebound

(verse 1)
I'm in a mood just shy of malicious,
Feedin' on anger and regret,
Deep in this brood, dark and delicious,
And I'm not through enjoyin' it yet...

(climb/refrain 1)
So you'd best come by some other time,
'Cause I don't feel like bein' nice,
And I'm sayin'...
Catch me on the rebound...
Catch me on the rebound...
Catch me on the rebound,
That's my advice.

(verse 2)
I'm guessin' you heard 'bout how he left me,
That kind of news don't travel slow,
But messing with words just now won't get me
Back to the place I'd rather go...

(climb/refrain 2)
Yeah, I've been depressed, not at my best,
So what more can I say?
Take a hint and
Catch me on the rebound...
Catch me on the rebound...
Catch me on the rebound,
Just go away.

(bridge)
I don't mean to seem such a drama queen,
But there's a movie playin' in my head.
I keep reelin' through it, scene-by-scene,
Feelin' black and blue and seeing red!

(short instrumental, then modulate ½ step)

(verse 3)
I must admit, you're wicked persistent,
Got to admire this grit you show,
Anyone else would have been indignant
And told me by now just where to go...

(closing climb/refrain)
So you're of a mind to try and find
The better part of me?
I can see you're tough, smile broad enough,
And don't discourage easily,
Well, c'mon then,
Catch me on the rebound...
Catch me on the rebound...
Catch me on the rebound,
That's where I'll be...

Catch me on the rebound,
And maybe we'll see...

Catch me on the rebound...
Just you and me!

All I Had To Do

Danny found a bank outside of Tarrytown

Eddie scoped it out 'n said,“We're taking ‘er down”

I told them they were crazy but they brought me around

When they promised me

All I had to do-woo-hoo

Was drive the car

Danny loved his money 'n he blew it so well

Eddie had a habit that was starting to swell

Their daddy owned a Chevy that was cherry as hell

A sweet, rocket machine

All I had to do-woo-hoo

Was drive the car

'81 Camaro

Canary and black

Brand new Hemi engine

Lit a fire on the track

The brothers thought we oughta take it out for a spin

I burned out of the parking lot before they got in

All I had to do-woo-hoo

Was drive the car

Friday afternoon would be no average day

We parked across the bank in front of Nails 'n Rays

Ten or fifteen minutes, then we'd be on our way

Junior, just sit tight

All I had to do-woo-hoo

Was drive the car

Shelley Ann Lakota, local homecoming queen

Walked out with a pedicure 'n ran into me

Looked me in the eyes 'n took a hold of the wheel

Said “You're mine tonight”

All I had to do-woo-hoo

Was drive the car

'81 Camaro

Canary and black

Brand new Hemi engine

Had some room in the back

Got her horizontal 'n I opened her wide

Had her motor racing like a newlywed bride

All I had to do-woo-hoo

Was drive the car

They told me all I had to do

Was drive the car

Woo-Hoo!

Miss Green

Miss Green

May I have a word with you?

I’ll even stay after school

To tell you, Miss Green

Miss Green

I watch you in the classroom

Got me a front row view

And here's the thing, Miss Green

Miss Green, you’re so fine

You appeared in a dream of mine

We was dancin’ close an’

You were in my arms

In the auditorium

While the band played on

And everyone could see

I had a thing for you, Miss Green

<Bridge>

Oh--- they could never understand

Twenty-two and seventeen

But oh---- all I think about is you

And I turn eighteen in a month, or two

Miss Green

I don't want to alarm you

And I never could harm you

If it's all just a dream

For dreams

Are strange and mystic things

Teach me all a smile could be

Oh, Miss Green

I just got to tell you, lady

Miss Green, you’re so fine

You appeared in a dream of mine

We was dancin’ close an’

You were in my arms

In the auditorium

While the band played on

And everyone could see

I had a thing for you, Miss Green

Oh, I had the sweetest dream, Miss Green

So, so fine, Miss Green

Oh----- Miss Green

And wedding bells chime

(Verse 1)

It feels like only yesterday

The sweet caress of your warm skin

Soft as petals dampened by the rain

Awakening butterflies within.

(Chorus)

I take your hand

And you take mine

The music plays

And wedding bells chime.

(Verse 2)

I know it's only memories

Jolted by this faded photograph

Feet squelching as we fled the rain

I can hear the echo of your laugh.

(Chorus)

I take your hand

And you take mine

The music still plays

And wedding bells chime.

(Bridge)

Tears not raindrops falling freely now

Not sure how long I've kept them in,

Petals falling from a stem

I love you, don't, I love you, don't

Don't doubt I'd say 'I do' again.

(Chorus)

I take your hand

And you take mine

The music still plays

And wedding bells chime.

(Verse 3)

Seems like it was only yesterday

A fleeting crazy blink of an eye

Can't have been quite so long ago

The fashions and haircuts dispel that lie.

(Chorus/Outro)

I take your hand

And you take mine

The music still plays

And wedding bells chime.

And I look up and see your blue eyes again

Feel your hand close on mine though the fog's drawing in.

Hear you whisper three words

And I smile from my bed,

We're running again

Feet squelch in the mud,

We're running until we can't run any more

Laughing 'til breathless we collapse on the floor.

The music still plays, yes it plays

And wedding bells chime

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ME

A doctor’s smack a cry is heard

The month of June in '62

From waters warm to cold dark world

My maiden voyage into the blue

Happy Birthday me

Happy Birthday me

No guarantees no certain plan

I'll make my mark without a doubt

Setting sail to unknown lands

Happy Birthday me

Happy Birthday me

Turned 41 and all alone

No loving kids or better half

It’s all I got to stay afloat

This joyless song my epitath

Happy Birthday me

Happy Birthday me

INSTRUMENTAL

VERSE 4:

Adrift at sea couldn’t find my way

A light of hope changed everything

I'm changing course, it’s not too late

With newborn dreams my soul now sings

Happy Birthday me

How Can It Be Enough

Wasn't it enough ...to join our hearts together

And hope...... that somehow love would find a way

Now waking from our dreams

Of sweet tomorrows

We find ourselves

Surrounded,

By bitter yesterdays

Isn't it enough..... our lives have grown so tangled

While sharing all the waters from love's well

We promised then.. our story

Was forever

Can it be true?,

There's nothing

Left to tell

Chorus:

I watch the clouds that block out all our sunshine

The rain that falls are tears that never dry

And every I Love You we'd say

Is growing fainter everyday

As we both stumble slowly

Through our days

Bridge:

Life is more than skies with troubled storm clouds

The sun and wind will clear away this rain

I'm ready for the world to make me over

I'm ready for an end to all this pain

Verse 3:

Oh.. can it be enough .....that birds awaken singing

Or ancient stars... burn brightly through the night

If you're not here, how does this earth ...

Keep spinning

How can it be enough ......

Without you

At my side

Chorus:

I watch the clouds that block out all our sunshine

The rain that falls are tears that never dry

And every I Love You we'd say

Forgotten now along the way

As we both stumble slowly

Through our days

Always Believe (Something Wonderful)

V1

A child is born under a warm summer sky

His parents they live for the gleam in his eye

They teach him to read and teach him to write

And they sing him to sleep almost every night

C

They sing

Always believe

In the truth in your heart

Always believe

And you'll have a head start

Always believe

In the next harvest moon

And always believe

Something wonderful is coming soon

V2

Momma & Poppa worked their fingers to the bone

To provide for their boy they'd turn any stone

They showed him a path to do what's right

As he followed in their footsteps he heard every night

C

They'd sing

Always believe

In the truth in your heart

Always believe

And you'll have a head start

Always believe

In the next harvest moon

And always believe

Something wonderful is coming soon

V3

The boy grew up straight and the boy up strong

And as always happens before all that long

He found him a girl who was soulful and bright

They sing to their daughter almost every night

C

They sing

Always believe

In the truth in your heart

Always believe

And you'll have a head start

Always believe

In the next harvest moon

And always believe

Something wonderful is coming soon

Always believe

Something wonderful is coming soon

Good Morning Sunshine

(Chorus)

Good morning sunshine

Good morning sunlight

Will you shine all day long

Would you dry my tears today

Good morning sunshine

Good morning sunlight

Will you right all the wrong

Would you dry my tears away

(Verse One)

Winter has come and gone, the nights were so long

It's been a long old time since I've seen the sun

What were you waiting for, spring is now around

And I can't stand being found the lonely one

This morning I looked up to the skies

The sun was shining with no disguise

And in my life I sure need the light

How I was longing to see it shine

(Chorus)

(Chorus)

Good morning sunshine

Good morning sunlight

Will you shine all day long

Would you dry my tears today

Good morning sunshine

Good morning sunlight

Will you right all the wrong

Would you dry my tears away

 (Verse Two)

Can't you see I need you, we're so far apart

Why, love, did you leave me with a broken heart

I need to see your face, feel your warm embrace

I wish I had known someone would take my place

For this feeling, there ain't no healing

To dry my tears, you're the only one

I need love for a heart that's reeling

This morning, it's good to see the sun

(Chorus)

Afraid to Open My Eyes (In case you disappear)

Verse 1

I still go down to the river

Lie on our soft green bed

But now when shadows fall over me

I'm afraid to turn my head

They may be only clouds

Shielding the summer rays

and not you leaning over me

Tempting with your playful gaze - playful ways

Chorus 1

Afraid to open my eyes

In case you disappear

Although they say it's over

that's still painful to hear

Minutes stretch into hours and

Hours I've learned to fear

Cos each time I open my eyes - you disappear

Verse 2

I still hear the sound of voices

Far off but coming my way

Like when you came to find me

When temper had led me astray

Tempted to turn my head, is it

Strangers on holiday?

Or you calling out to me

to find me like yesterday - how I pray

Chorus 2

Afraid to open my eyes

In case you disappear

Although they say it's over

that's still painful to hear

Minutes stretch into hours and

Hours I've learned to fear

Cos each time I open my eyes - you disappear

Break

This place is me and you

I come here often - do you?

I come here often to be alone with you - do you?

Do you...?

Chorus 3

Afraid to open my eyes

In case you disappear

Although they say it's over

that's still painful to hear

Minutes stretch into hours and

hours I've learned to fear

Cos each time I open my eyes - you disappear

Wishes Of Love

(Intro)
There may be many miles between us
Although it doesn't seem that way
When we are cherishing each other
Sharing troubles every day

 (1)
If one of us is needing help
There is never cause for fear
It's as if we're not alone
The other one is always near

(2)
Life can sometimes be a struggle
And problems drag us down
If one of us should stumble
The other lifts us off the ground

(Ch)
Like Guardian angels embracing one another
Blessings span the distance we're apart
When we're befriending, we are sending
Wishes of love, from our hearts

(Br)
Having intuition, interacting as we do
We experience what our partner's going through
Knowing what the other is in most need of.
Sending selfless thoughts of endless love

(Ch)
Like guardian angels embracing one another
Blessings span the miles we are apart
When we're befriending, we are sending
Wishes of love, from our hearts

(Finale)
Some people say that we're enchanted
Sceptics shake their heads and laugh
Yet we both know our devotions are true
When we're connecting, we are projecting
Wishes of love from our hearts

No Present Like the Time

V1

Chocolate cake and candles, my kids'll be here soon

To razz their Dad for turning sixty-one

My own Dad's home in Depoe Bay, it's hard for him to fly

He calls to say, Happy Birthday, son

V2
I didn't send a gift, but you know I wanted to

My mind tends to drift, and I forgot

No more time for shopping now, too late, I'm sorry, son

I'll mail you a check for what you want

Chorus

Dad, you always gave me more than enough

By being around when I was growing up

Fishing for cutthroat on the North Santiam

That day at Garibaldi digging clams

The hours you helped me with projects of mine

Dad, there's no present like the time

V3

His voice cracked a little, he struggled with his words

Said, son, I remember, just like you

All the time we spent together when you were a kid

Those times were a gift to me, too

Chorus

Dad, you always gave me more than enough

By being around when I was growing up

Fishing for cutthroat on the North Santiam

That day at Garibaldi digging clams

The hours you helped me with projects of mine

Dad, there's no present like the time

Bridge

Sittin' in the kitchen with Dad on the line

My wife and kids and grandkids laughing on the porch

All of us want to be here, we're trying to get it right

Four generations, passing the torch

Chorus

Dad, you always gave me more than enough

By being around when I was growing up

Fishing for cutthroat on the North Santiam

That day at Garibaldi digging clams

The hours you helped me with projects of mine

Dad, there's no present like the time

Evening Echo

V
When your old friend

Sends the invite
We're dead sure

That it's the right night
Drive out of the city

Crazy far
Until the sky's

A million billion stars

V
People swimming

Like in Eden
It's a paradise

For heathens
Faces dance in mirrors

Everywhere
There's such a sense

Of freedom in the air

C
I see spiders run from geckos
In a house that's pure Art Deco
Filled with paintings by El Greco
Can you hear the evening echo?
Can you hear the evening echo?
Can you hear... the evening echo?

V
A guest goes walking

In the desert
Dressed in nothing

But a nightshirt
He disappears

Behind colossal rocks
Later on

The cops'll spot his socks

C
I see spiders run from geckos
In a house that's pure Art Deco
Filled with paintings by El Greco
Can you hear the evening echo?
Can you hear the evening echo?
Can you hear... the evening echo?

B
I'm thinking that the party is so cool
And then we find the body in the pool

(Instrumental)

C
I see spiders run from geckos
In a house that's pure Art Deco
Filled with paintings by El Greco
Can you hear the evening echo?
Can you hear the evening echo?
Can you hear... the evening echo?
(Repeat)

Outro

And I'm thinking that the party is so cool

Then we find... the body in the pool

Mr. Banker

Mr. Banker, don't you give me any loan
All that money that you lent me is now gone
You said the odds were looking up when we discussed it on the phone
But, Mr. Banker, please don't give me any more

Mr. Banker, don't believe a word I say
The truth has long been gambled all away
My family - they saw me leave - now living on my own
Mr. Banker, don't you give me any loan

I don't know why I can't resist
The roulette wheel,
The poker chips
But I don't want to be like this
Anymore

Mr. Banker, I'm not blaming you at all
You could've stopped me but I know that's not your job
The numbers that I showed you never hinted at a fall
So Mr. Banker, don't take blame for this at all

I don't know why I can't resist
The roulette wheel,
The stack of chips
But I don't want to be like this
Anymore

You shake my hand, it seems I'm all approved
Casino doors will greet me pretty soon
There's no point now revealing that I have this secret hope..
That Mr. Banker, you won't give me any loan

Oh, but Mr. Banker, please don't give me any more..

How Bad You Got The Blues?

Your girlfriend she broke up with you

And now you're really sad -boo hoo

You think you got the blues?

But you'll be all patched up real soon

She'll save you from a life of ruin

You almost had the blues

You bought yourself a slide guitar

You're playing out in college bars

How bad you got the blues?

I'll check on you again real soon

We can catch up on your news

And maybe then we'll see just

How bad you got the blues?

How bad...

How bad you got the blues?

Excuse me for my nonchalance

We call you guys blues dilettantes

How bad you got the blues?

You ever have to take a life?

Or carve a man up with a knife?

How bad you got the blues?

You ever strung out on the crack?

You do twelve years can't get 'em back

How bad you got the blues?

I gotta couple questions more

Do you still have things to lose?

Rock bottom is a hard mattress

How bad you got the blues?

How bad...

How bad you got the blues?

And when you're finally on parole

Ain't no one cares -no none at all

How bad you got the blues?

And all the cops they know your name

They're hoping you'll screw up again

How bad you got the blues?

So all you blues boy dilettantes

I say be careful what you want

(spoken)...Cuz you don't know

How bad you got the blues.

The Sun Is King

Verse 1

I open the curtain to let the light in

He's staring right at me

There's no way to stop him, no way I can win

He brings me to my knees

Pre-Chorus 1

He's scared of the rain

But birds sing his name

Begging him to stay

Chorus

The king rules gently

But he never lets go

Sometimes he feels empty

Sometimes he's alone

And no one seems to notice

The effect that he has on them

He controls the world with the tips of his fingers

The sun won't set on him

Verse 2

When my heart breaks he is standing there still

And when I am strong he is too

His presence is constant, it gives me a thrill

Thinking of all I could do

Pre-Chorus 2

I'm dreading his reign

Each one's not the same

And no one wants to say

Chorus

The king rules gently

But he never lets go

Sometimes he feels empty

Sometimes he's alone

And no one seems to notice

The effect that he has on them

He controls the world with the tips of his fingers

The sun will always win

Bridge

The sun

The sun

The sun is king

The sun

The sun

The sun is king

Chorus

The king rules gently

But he never lets go

Sometimes he feels empty

Sometimes he's alone

And no one seems to notice

The effect that he has on them

He controls the world with the tips of his fingers

The sun will always win

Feelin' Like Medusa

V1
It started this mornin'
When you rolled out of bed
Complainin' the pillow's
Too hard for your head
You ate the last biscuit

While I fried up your eggs

Said the new neighbour's cute
'N I oughta shave my legs

Pre-chorus
Well darlin', these fine times

Ain't gonna last

Unless you learn reeeeal fast...

Chorus
I'm gettin' twitchy
Trigger finger's itchy
So unless you're bringin' good news
You better back away
'Cause I'm feelin' like Medusa
On a bad-hair day

V1
The Chevy needs fixin'
'N the fridge is on the blink
The kids are all ailin'
Somethin's blockin' the sink
N' here you come, scuttlin'
Like a crab to the pot
Not a lick of good sense

'N the water's gettin' hot

Pre-chorus
Well darlin', these fine times

Ain't gonna last

Unless you learn reeeeal fast...

Chorus
I'm gettin' twitchy
Trigger finger's itchy
So unless you're bringin' good news
You better back away
'Cause I'm feelin' like Medusa
On a bad-hair day

Bridge
Don't blame this on PMS
You ain't layin' that on me

No, the problem here is ZMS
Zero Male Sensitivity

Chorus
I'm getting' twitchy
Trigger finger's itchy
So unless you're bringin' good news
You better back away
'Cause I'm feelin' like Medusa
On a bad-hair day

Outro (fading)
Look at me sideways

...C'mon, I dare ya...

... Look at me sideways

You bet I'll scare ya

I'll turn you to stone
...Now leave me alone

'Cause I'm feeling' like Medusa

On a bad-hair day...

Everything Must Go (The Banjo Song)

(Verse)

 I found my old banjo

By the magazine stand

Everything must go

That was the plan

My son said Mom is gone

There's not enough space

Let's move the banjo along

And get it out of my face

(Verse)

I tuned it up as best I could

I started out a little rusty

That banjo understood

I felt warmth inside me

My stiff fingers and hands

Became nimble and quick

I was back with the band

So I played a few licks

(Chorus)

I remember the music

Everything must go

The bluegrass, the country

Everything must go

That banjo was magic

Everything must go

As it played with me

(Bridge)

The songs came in a rush

From deep in my heart

The banjo was my brush

The music was my art

(Chorus)

(Verse)

I turned around

My son had been there

Listening to it all along

He stood and glared

Then he took the banjo

Tore it from my hand

And said Nice show-
One heck of a final stand

(Chorus)

Comic Girl Life

1/

At times I envy your comic girl life
Scene on scene, never think twice
Sketch of a girl in colorful suit
Strained to action, but always cute

2/

At times I envy your comic girl life
The thrill of action feels so nice
Little stories, derring-do
Everyone buys into you

Ch/

Comic girl life, Comic girl nice, Ink on paper, cut like ice

3/

At times I envy your comic girl life
But paper tears belie the price
When your frozen and the ink has dried
In denial that any thing's died

Ch/

Comic girl life, Comic girl nice, Ink on paper, cut like ice

4/ At times I envy your comic girl life
But in 2018 I now think twice
A dream on the wind in an alleyway
Torn by the price they made you pay

Wanda Saves

Verse 1

Sometimes there is only one

Sometimes two or three

Often she gets confused

Over which one she should be

Verse 2

She sold herself for forty dollars

To a driver at a truck stop

Bought a bus ticket to Kansas

And a cold bottle of pop

Chorus

Tryst or kill she'll make her way

A few minutes of passion displayed

When desperation raves

Wanda saves...

 Verse 3

She keeps a mental list

Of places she's never been

Reality is a distant mist

In this wilderness of sin

Verse 4

Judy is the smart one

Coy and really shy

Debbie is the child of stone

She watched mommy die

Chorus

Tryst or kill she'll make her way

A few minutes of passion displayed

When desperation raves

Wanda saves...

Bridge

Wanda is their protector

She's the One in charge

She's the dark enforcer

With no lack of courage

Chorus

Tryst or kill she'll make her way

A few minutes of passion displayed

When desperation raves

Wanda saves...

Tag

Yea, when desperation raves

Wanda saves...

Well done, Patty, Robert, and Jonie! :) Great lyrics all round. I picked two of the three winners with a third vying with a couple of others - and have had quite a surprise now that I know who the writers actually are. ;)

And thanks, folks, for my own placement with 'Feelin' Like Medusa'. I'm amazed and delighted that it got that far up the list, given how unashamedly country it is. Lots of fun writing it, though. ;)

Another really good contest. Great to see so many participants. And thanks, Iggy, as always, for handling the logistics. :)

I actually GASPED when I saw these results!  I can't believe it!  Thank you so much, all of you, for your votes of confidence!  I entered this lyric totally unsure whether it was good or bad. I am so pleased that it reached some of you. One of the (many) things I worried about was whether the place names (in Oregon) would be too obscure to be appealing, or if the music of the names themselves, which I always liked as a kid, would be a positive. I will post this in the Lyrics Critique and you can let me know your opinion.

Congratulations to RobertK for Silver: Catch Me On The Rebound was a fresh topic with great lines: "Feelin' black and blue and seeing red" is classic!,

and to Jonie for Bronze: All I Had to Do.  I loved the name "Shelley Ann Lakota" and how much fun that would be to sing. And the twist at the end was just delightful. Both were in my Top Picks.

Others I thought were exceptionally good were Donna's Feelin' Like Medusa (great visuals),  Kuya's How Bad You Got the Blues (felt REAL), LyriCal's Evening Echo (well-crafted images and that jaw-dropping ending!), and Tracy's Torn Up Art (I liked the Torn Up Art/TornApart play.)

As always, I was struck by the creativity coming from all corners. Each lyric had its own perspective and flavor. There is a lot of talent on this board.

Thanks again,

Patty

Congrats on the win Peko, a great play on words in the title.  I also thought 'Catch Me On The Rebound' was very strong in another deep/challenging field.

Congratulations once again to Patty for another great lyric, and to Robertk and Jonie as well for your great lyrics. There were a lot of other excellent lyrics this month too, and nice ideas coming in from all directions. We do get an eclectic assortment of lyrics each month. It's nice to have twenty plus people participating month after month too. That makes for a good contest.

Thanks to those who gave "How Bad You Got The Blues"  nice scores too. It scored higher than expected. Whoever gave me a one I just want to say I owe you (a) one. Thanks, very much.

Well done guys - My top picks went to the front runners (including a top score for "How bad you got the blues" along with them). I especially enjoyed the cleverness of Peko's lyric and it is well deserved!

Once again I am scraping the bottom - a full quarter of people voted my lyric "4.0" or lower. Ah well, see you again next month...

Congratulations to Patty, Robert, and Jonie for claiming the top 3 spots - all fine songs. And to Iggy for organising.

Also great to see so many entries!

My personal favourites were 'All I had to do' and 'How can it be enough'. The woo-hoo bit of 'All I had to do-woo-hoo' got rather stuck in my head!

Happy enough with where my lyric ended up and think that's the first 1 score that someone has given me, so thanks for that. :)

After the discussions that followed last month's competition, I wonder how many people tried to write to a winning formula?

Congrats Patty, Robert and Jonie - all great lyrics.

My fav this month was Donna's - that line "feel like Medusa on a bad hair day" is stellar! :)

Cheers iggy for hosting - a lot of work with so many entries :)

Thanks, Paul. ;) I was hoping a few folks would get the reference to the snake-haired Medusa. ;)

SongWolfe, good question (about the formula). I've mentioned it in the blog.

FWIW, Medusa was the song I rated the highest... and the fact that some folks rated it below average, and one even gave it a poor, well... let's just say that, contrary to the maxim, not EVERYONE has the right to an opinion. :P

On that issue, the point of judging lyrics is that there are several important criteria to consider beyond whether or not the subject matter of the song itself tickles one's fancy.

Tight metre, clever use of rhyme (including internal) and phrase, musicality, consistency within the microcosm presented, cohesive development/progression of the song through its verses etc.

It should, in a perfect learning/feedback environment, be more a matter of judging complete craftsmanship rather than one's being enamoured with a title or phrase, or one's heartstring's pulled merely on the topic.  After all, a lyric isn't truly a lyric unless it presents itself to musical composition and performance.  Until then, it's merely an idea for a "song poem", more or less worthy, and the world is full of ideas.

IMNSHO, your song hit on all cylinders but one and should have scored higher.

On another side note, the current scoring system is a bit overly granular, and lends itself to only entrants (and sometimes, not even them) willing to go through the trouble.  A bit more feedback from the "listening audience", as it were, might be warranted, through a simpler system of "best three" or something like that.  It would also eliminate the all-too-human temptation to skew the results by rating what one believes is one's closest competition with an unduly low score, as I think much of the results currently show.

Anyway, just my thoughts on the subject.  I could be right. ;)

Thanks for your vote of confidence, RobertK. Glad you enjoyed 'Medusa' :) Re the votes: It's always amusing to see the inevitable ''4.5' or '4' in every contest, even for the winning lyric(s). ;)

You're right, of course, that craftsmanship should be the main focus in any assessment. I'd be pleased if you'd like to share your thoughts in the blog (see 'Lyric Writing: Formula or Freefall' ) on the right-hand side of the page.  It's good when lyric writers can get together to 'talk shop', so to speak. :)

Well done Patty - when I first saw that clever title I thought that must be either you or Paul. It's really refreshing read a new way of looking at things inspired by an old saying :)

My other favourites where:

Graybeard's "Wanda Saves" - I could imagine this one as the theme song to a movie about "Wanda",
MusicalKey's "Everything Must Go" - could easily become a bluegrass banjo classic! and there's a lovely country innocence to TyCobb's  "Always Believe".

What an outstanding entry this month; I didn't score any lower than a 3.5 so well done to everyone.

Does anyone know what the muse lyric contest record is? - 24 must be up there....

Well done Iggy for handling it all :)

Congrats to the winnaz! I liked Catch Me as top pick,. Medusa, How Can it Be,  and Wanda Saves,   No Present like the Time- I had right behind those, but I can understand it coming out on top. Univ. theme and great title. All I had to do-I thought left a little on the table, as a story song, but it resonated with some good lines, so what do I know.

A few honorable mentions of my own--Wanda Saves, Evening Echo, Comic Girl,  which had good originality.Wedding Bells Chimed was lovely, with an awesome end, with the right music...

As for my own ditty, meh, I figured it would come in middle of pack. Fwiw, the song is a ballad with  long whole notes on the ees and ouus, with room for a singer to spread out a bit. But, maybe simplistic for the page, or something some took issue with, ha.  Thanks to whoever gave it the 1! Thoughts welcome.

Anyway, my first contest, it was fun and thanks for the creativity and for the proper performance of all administration duties.

9thStLine, I thought your Miss Green was charming, and had an innocence about it. I liked it very much.  it felt authentic - even a tiny bit poignant - and I loved the line about the 18th birthday coming in a month or two. I could hear it with music, and I think a lot of guys would relate to it. :) (Heck, even Macron, the President of France, ended up marrying his high school teacher, who's something like 25 years older than he is. ;) )

And speaking of poignant - MusicalKey's 'Everything Must Go' was heartbreaking. Lovely work.

And I especially liked Kuya's 'How Bad You Got the Blues', and loved the positive attitude in Ty Cobb's 'Always Believe'.

Congratulations to Patty, Robert and Jonie! I scored all of you among my highest. Lots of good entries this time, for sure.

I couldn't choose between Patty's and Donna's for my favorite. Both are so great in such different ways. Patty's is poignant in just the right measure and Donna's is wicked fun, with a hook that just about turned me to stone.

Thanks to all who had kind words for and/or who voted for Evening Echo.

25 entries has to be a record. Thanks for toiling in the trenches to make it happen, Iggy!

I want to welcome Robertk here. I've already congratulated you on your silver prize in an earlier post.  Well done! As a new participant here, second place is great way to introduce yourself. However. However.

I do want to take very strong issue with your last comment here. As I read it, you dismissed much of us as cheats who purposely skew our votes to try to hurt the best lyrics, and in the process, help our own entries.

I will concede the possibility that one or two may do that (a tiny fraction of our participants at most) on occasion or even on a regular basis, but you didn't say that--- you implied that much of us--your fellow participants- cheat. I think you are way out of line there.  And having gotten to know many of these participants here at the forum, I am certain you are wrong. There's good decent people here. At least half of this months lyric writers have won this contest over the years. We don't need to cheat to win.

You've been a member here three weeks. We've been discussing the wide spread of the scores for years here.  A lot of theories. Your spread this month was 1.5 to 4, or almost excellent to below average. Patty's (aka peko) had a spread of 1 to 4, or from excellent to below average. Joni got bronze with an even tighter spread between 1.5 and 3.5 or almost excellent and average. Why? Were the 4s that you and Patty received evidence of your fellow entrants cheating or were there other factors in play?   I admit the 4s do sting. Wait until you get a 4.5. Ouch!

Over the years and even quite recently we've talked about this wide spread in scores. We've even discussed whether we'd prefer tighter scores like Jonie received this month or whether we'd prefer some ones and one point fives even if they were balanced out with a couple more fours.  Jonie had my high score btw.

If I recall I think some of us concluded we would rather have  a few ones with the same average final score then solid threes so that could feel we strongly connected with someone.  I wish you had taken the time to go back even a few months and catch up on the discussion because it's quite interesting. Before you accused much of us of cheating.

You assumed things. You assumed one of the entrants couldn't go to the trouble to even vote. Rookie mistake. The lyric contest moderator, Iggy, a gifted lyricist, sometimes enters a lyric but disqualifies the entry before the scores are announced. He's the only one who knows how many of these he's actually won! He gets to participate without anyone accusing him of anything.

As a rule of thumb, if the disqualfied entry was podium worthy, it was probably Iggy's.  See how easy it is to write someone off?

We don't need to cheat to win.

I am starting to wonder!! :-) :-) :-) :-)

A comment about the scoring -

I am sure I am like most other people. I read through each lyric a maximum of 3 times. Kevin's lyric got a 1.5 from me, but I have to be honest I didnt recognize the cleverness of the hook until the 2nd reading. I thought "thats a nice story/sentiment" without getting the "thats clever" but. Once I saw it the score improved.

with 20-something lyrics its hard to spot all the nuances that the writer has put into what they have written. I suspect some people are reading a lyric 1 time, and maybe missing something - a rhyme scheme, a double-meaning, etc. I think this can account for the occasional "4" on an otherwise winning lyric. Sometimes I am surprised by the winning lyrics and I humbly realize I missed something. I dont think a deeper conspiracy theory is needed.

I do want to take very strong issue with your last comment here. As I read it, you dismissed much of us as cheats who purposely skew our votes to try to hurt the best lyrics, and in the process, help our own entries.

Perhaps I misused the word "much", and didn't mean to imply many people... I mean in the examples where the range of ratings had one or two that were obviously low-balls... for any who took my statement to mean that it was done by many people, for that I apologize on the misunderstanding.

Rather I was observing that on many of the lyrics the ranges on were wide enough on several instances to be far beyond any "just an opinion" that could be justifiable, and one of the examples I used was the Medusa lyric.

If you think a rating of 4.5 on that lyric is somehow justifiable, then we'll just have to agree to disagree, but I think it's quite obvious that there is some purposeful attempts to throw a monkey wrench into the works on several of the lyrics.  Likewise, among a few others I could mention, my own included, and if someone wants to justify having given Catch Me On The Rebound a below average rating, I'm all ears.

(edit: my previous inclusion of an MVP instance was never verified, so I won't repeat it as fact)

In short, it's an all-too-human phenomenon, and it does occur, as you yourself admitted, so let's just leave it at that.

Okay, my bad... but you DID mention "disqualification", so the assumption wasn't untoward.

My point remains that the only people who scored were other writers, and it's a tedious process which most nonparticpants don't seem to want to go through... I only looked over April and March, and I believe I only saw two additional raters on top of the participants.  I think there should be more "listener" input, as it were, and the way to accomplish that is not to force everyone to go through and rate every lyric, especially with such granularity.

No question that subsequent readings of just about anything will help us to catch things we missed earlier.

But going from a "meh" to a "wow" is asking a bit much of any a-ha moment.  ;)

Yes, but there are abnormal scores for just about every lyric. Even the ones toward the bottom receive a few good , or very good scores, so its hard to spot the smoking gun in it all. I got my own 4.5 to hang my hat on. Meh, when they all come up 4.5 I'll start to worry. Maybe.

Fwiw, I agree, that's an ignorant score for a lyric such as Feeling Like Medusa, which I had as a toss up between that and your lyric as best.

Agreed, both the high-balls and the low-balls only raise suspicions, nothing that will stand up in court... much like we see in the Olympics, which is probably why they tried to make their systems fairer by tossing one each of the highest and lowest and/or averaging out the totals. ;)

Robert,

I don't have to justify Donna's 4.5 as I didn't give her a 4.5. this month or any month.  It seems unsually low but until you plot the scores  out on a graph  it's only  a guess whether  a 4 or a 4.5 is more than a standard deviation or two off the average.

I was one of 6 or 7 people who rated yours a 3.0 but I see 3 or 4 others rated it a 3.5. Therefore a score of 4 is certainly less than a standard deviation from the average; in other words: normal bell curve. Despite your indignance.

Oftentimes people are willing to share their thought process as to how they arrived at a score. Sometimes here and sometimes in the feedback area. I don't have to agree with anyone else's scores. Clearly people arrive at the scoring table with different life experiences and different musical preferences. We are from all different places in the world at different stages in our lives. It would look more like a fix if our scores matched better.
