Toot Toot Tootsie, Goodbye

Yesterday I heard a lover sigh

"Goodbye, oh me, oh my"

Seven times he got aboard his train

And seven times he hurried back

To kiss his love again, and tell her

Toot, toot, Tootsie, goodbye

Toot, toot, Tootsie, don't cry

The choo choo train that takes me

Away from you, no words can tell how sad it makes me

Are you worried that he'll miss his train?

Seems that if he went back 7 times he never made it on the train.

Not sure why that is a problem, to be honest ...

yeah - maybe he boarded early, or it was delayed, or waited for him ... :)

Either way it is a great old song.  I’ve heard many barbershop quartets sing it.

When i was a kid I heard my cousan sing it, and he had a good voice

Ive been a fan of Al Joson ever since,

great songs, great voice, and great entertainer

Songs from that era had such an innocence about them, the melodies, the lyrics. Music has certainly moved on, become so much more sophisticated. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. I guess it doesn't matter. It's just nice that they are still around for us to enjoy.

He never got on that train and stayed on. He just couldn't leave her. Or that's how I tell myself the story anyway.

Hi Jonie

Yes he certanly got off and missed the train so he never actually went!

Hence the problem with the lyric.

And yet later on the lyric says -

Look for the mail,

I'll never fail

If you don't get a letter

Then you know I'm in jail.

Which happens to be my all time favourite song lyric.

I thought he was a straight living guy, yet he fears he could end up in jail

What a twist to the tale

Mike

This lyric has been bugging me for days, I knew that everyone was reading this wrong. But it clicked in my head today...

"Seven times he got aboard his train..."

HIS train. It was his train! He was the driver. So kissed goodbye to tootsie before getting back on the train, but he did it seven times.

Later we find out, thanks to Alistair, that despite being a good guy he went to jail. So how could he go from being a good guy, a train driver, presumably trusted in his occupation, to going to jail? All because he kissed Tootsie?

I think the answer lies in 'kissing Tootsie" and "toot, toot". Is he really kissing a girl called Tootsie? Or is he enjoying a toot on a pipe or joint?

I will be honest, were I a train driver and I had seven toots on a joint I am pretty sure that train isn't going anywhere. And it is likely that I am going to jail.

Toot, toot,  Tootsie, goodbye.

I'll get me coat.

Maybe he's tooting the train's horn :)

Maybe he called the train "Tootsie", and because he knows he's going to jail, he is saying goodbye to her :):)

Why do I get the blame for everything?

I think that was Mike :)
