Verse 1

Slow and steady never won no race

Best get moving pick up the pace

Because I’ve been to the mountain and the valley below

And higher is better, better than low

Chorus

You say you don’t believe me but you know that it’s true

More more more is better for you

Verse 2

You don’t buy a kite to fly it low

Or drive a Ferrari to take it slow

Higher and faster is the only way

Don’t care what your preacher or your momma say

Chorus

You say you don’t believe me but you know that it’s true

More more more is better for you

Verse 3

If one will get you going more will make you cruise

True of money, women or booze

If he gets some then I want more

What’s the point of playin if ya don’t keep score

Chorus

You say you don’t believe me but you know that it’s true

More more more is better for you

Verse 4

Wall Street or Bourbon Street it’s all the same

Get your kicks in before they close the game

Buy your tulips low then sell ‘em high

Keep the party rollin and drink the bar dry

Chorus /Outro

You say you don’t believe me but you know that it’s true

More more more is better for you

I don’t believe in heaven so what’s to do

More more more will pull ya through

You say you don’t believe me but you know that it’s true

More more more is better for you

More more more is better for you 2x

Glitter Fingerprints

v

Inspiration flows through me like speed of light meets galaxy

There's an explosion

My pen won't stop my brain set free mingles with rainfall in the trees

Drips with emotion

pc

Consuming me totally

In hoping we could be

c

If I try to reach the stars could we meet halfway from Mars

I'll leave glitter fingerprints all over your glass

There's a moonbeam I can climb if I help relieve your sighs

And a fairy lit reception of a million lights

v

Elevation makes me crawl, I bend to its will and baby give it my all

Heart and desire

Late at night I hear your call and shadows throw candles at dry walls

Starting fake fires

pc

Consuming me totally

In hoping we could be

c

If I try to reach the stars could we meet halfway from Mars

I'll leave glitter fingerprints all over your glass

There's a moonbeam I can climb if I help relieve your sighs

I would make your love my mission if you'd give me a sign

b

I try to be good, I try to give out love

I'm always _ under _ some kind of attack

I must've been grasping at straws too long cos

They've started grasping baa-aa-ack

c

So if I try to reach the stars could we meet halfway from Mars

I'll leave glitter fingerprints all over your glass

There's a moonbeam I can climb if I help relieve your sighs

And a fairy lit reception of a million lights

I Come Here Every Day

I'd seen the old man sit alone
In the park on my way home
One day I joined him on his bench
Just to offer my "Hello"

Well I'm not one who likes to pry
But there was heartache in his eyes
Over time he opened up
Told me how he missed his wife

ch
He said "I come here every day
'cause that's what we used to do
To watch the children play
To hear the pigeons coo
She still talks to me this way..
When I come here every day"

Every afternoon since then
We traded stories, became friends
But she was always in his thoughts
And he'd remind me once again:

"I come here every day
That's what we used to do
To watch the children play
To hear the pigeons coo
She still talks to me this way..
When I come here every day"

spoken:

Then one day an empty bench
Waited there instead of him
My worst fear had come true
I had lost my dearest friend..

Now I come here every day
That's what we used to do
To watch the children play
To hear the pigeons coo
He still talks to me this way..
When I come here every day

Yes, he still talks to me this way..
When I come here every day

A Burden On Me

Well love I hear is getting closer
Soon it’ll knock on my door
It’ll come falling like the rain
Ease my mind and numb my pain
And the hurtin' will be no more

I remember you spoke of dancing
And the time it was midnight and one
I looked straight into your eyes
And I saw them liquid fires
In the rebel and the broken son

And that night you sang of moonlight
Sang of a love so violently free
Like birds resting in their nests
Like there was nothing to protest
Like there was no one but you and me

So I have come to fetch the sunlight
To put it in your strumming hands
To lay mercy at your feet
Through victory and defeat
Sound asleep ’neath the poor man’s land

Well love they say is getting closer
Soon it might be close to home
But I’ll never know a flame
Burn so fiercely once again
No place like home for a rolling stone

So tonight I will drink for those fallen
I will drink for the songs you set free
And one day I will confess
To have nothing is worse than less
But today, it’s a burden on me
A burden on me

Let Your Self Go

(V1)

We haven't cleared our garden for 6 or 7 years

What we call wild flowers the folk next door call weeds

Don't sweep, don't mop, don't wash up, it's all for show

You can be like us if you let yourself go

(V2).

Car's down the scrapyard, engine's worst you heard

We never cleaned it anyway, why polish up a turd?

The only way to make it go, was begging for a tow

You can be like us if you let yourself go

(Ch)

Let yourself go, life's much easier by far

Don't vac the house, cut the grass or even clean the car

I trimmed the hedge once, which encouraged it to grow

You can be like us, if you let yourself go

(V3)

We don't wash dishes our cat licks them clean

Don't clear up the cat mess, that's more our doggies scene

My wife makes me tog up, if I look like a scarecrow

I tell her “Be like me dear and let yourself go”

(Ch)

Let yourself go, life's much easier by far

Don't vac the house, cut the grass or even clean the car

I trimmed the hedge once, which encouraged it to grow

You can be like us, if you let yourself go

(V3)

Our friends called us House Proud when we invite them in

They live down the rail yard and eat out of the bin

Cleanliness is relative and we're the ones who know

You can be like us if you let yourselves go

(Ch)

Let yourself go, life's much easier by far

Don't vac the house, cut the grass or even clean the car

I trimmed the hedge once, which encouraged it to grow

You can be like us, if you let yourself go

(4)

We kept missing things around the house like video and tv

We assumed they would turn up under the mess eventually

The police said we'd been burgled several months ago

You can be like us, if you let yourselves go

(Br)

Don't become a slave to where you're living

Take it easy, enjoy life, you'll be forgiven

Meet The Fockers, is our favourite movie show

You can be like us if you let yourself go

(V5)

Our neighbors want us to put some cash aside

So we can sell up, move away and retire

Once we heard them call us, "a pair of witty so and so's"

We shouted, you can be like us, just let yourself go

(Ch)

Let yourself go, life's much easier by far

Don't vac the house, mow the grass or even clean the car

I trimmed the hedge once, which encouraged it to grow

You can be like us, if you let yourself go

High

Verse 1

High, Ever since you said

Hi, That's where I've been

High, on cloud nine

floating on air oh i'm

Chorus

High, like Willie Nelson when he goes on tour

like a 9 inch lift on an 87 Ford

High like the mountains on a silver bullet

Every time no I can't control it

Your lips, my lips, that kiss, I get

Verse 2

High, like I am right now

High, Don't wanna come down

High, On you babe

I, think I'll stay

Chorus

High, like Willie Nelson when he goes on tour

like a 9 inch lift on an 87 Ford

High like the mountains on a silver bullet

Every time no I can't control it

Your lips, my lips, that kiss, I get

Bridge

High, just one taste

High, that's all it takes

To get me

Oh baby you get me

Chorus

High, like Willie Nelson when he goes on tour

like a 9 inch lift on an 87 Ford

High like the mountains on a silver bullet

Every time no I can't control it

Your lips, my lips, that kiss, I get

High, on top of the world

and I don't come down to girl

Forever

Verse 1:
When you stare into my eyes
This big world melts away
All the colors of my mind
No longer shades of grey

Echo the pulse of life
Hearts beating as I fall
Hypnotized and wide awake
From the beauty of it all

Chorus:
Like a bird on a wire
Just waiting to fly
Wrap yourself in my arms
And dream into the sky

Till the day that I die
Till the day that I die
Till the day that I die
Till the day that I die

Verse 2:
When the sunset starts to fade
And our weary breath goes cold
As pages turn to dust
Will our story still be told

Will you reach out your hand
And watch the ashes fall
Was it better to have loved
Than never loved at all

Chorus:
Like a bird on a wire
Just waiting to fly
Wrap yourself in my arms
And dream into the sky

Till the day that I die
Till the day that I die
Till the day that I die
Till the day that I die

Bridge:
You're forever in my heart
Forever in my bones
Forever in my blood
Swimming through my soul

Chorus:
Till the day that I die
Till the day that I die
Till the day that I die
Till the day that I die

Till the day, that I die
Till the day that I die
Till the day that I die
Till the day that I die
Till the day that I
Till the day that I die

All the Way to Jordan

V1

This journey we’ve been taking

This road without a hill

We can’t agree

Where it should lead

Which leaves us standing still

V2

I’ve heard the list of reasons

Your cautionary tales

They might come true

But Waterloo

Won’t always tip the scales

CH

Make up your mind

Are you with me

All the way to Jordan

No turning back if anything goes wrong

Make up your mind

If you’re with me

I’m leaving in the morning

‘Cuz Jordan doesn’t hang around for long

V3

I’m open and I’m willing

To give you what you need

But no more space

To contemplate

Your lack of certainty

V4

Stop straddling those fences

Just saddle up and ride

If you should go

At least I’ll know

My doubts were justified

BR

I know it’s only fear that keeps you here

And it’s fear that keeps you holding back

Don’t need a guarantee we’ll end up there

Just a promise we’ll try to stay on track

CH

Make up your mind

Are you with me

All the way to Jordan

No turning back as soon as things go wrong

Make up your mind

If you’re with me

I’m leaving in the morning

‘Cuz Jordan doesn’t hang around for long

Love Yeah (Farewell Song)

Hush little darlin

Don't shed a tear

Everybody's gotta do it

Look to the heavens

And have no fear

Just gotta get through it

There comes a time when I must leave you on your own

I will watch you from above yeah

Remember I have felt the love you've shown

And I will shower you with love yeah

You see no one here

Gets out alive

And we all knew it

What will you do then

When it's your time

There's nothing to it

There will be days when you wake and you feel alone

I am right there up above yeah

In each pathway you will find many stone

But I can shower you with love yeah

Surely we can find a way

With the power of love yeah

Even on the darkest day

I am right there up above yeah

All I can say be not afraid

I will shower you with love  yeah

Just remember when it rains

The flowers are my love yeah

The Day You Went Away

(V)
I was young and foolish,I was Scared and alone,
Going down the wrong path that was unknown.
I still have your little shoes on my shelf,
Pink or blue, I didn’t want to know myself.
It was the day I made the awful decision
The day you went away

(V)
It was your life You could have had it all
I have your picture in a box, you were so small
You should have been given a chance to choose
but baby you weren’t the only one to lose.
I made a decision That broke my heart in two
The day you went away

(C)
I'm sorry I was not strong enough to keep you,

I'm sorry that I let you go.

Maybe in another life I can hold your hand

and maybe you will understand.

Why it’s so hard to face the day ,

the day you went away.

(V)
I was too young to know what I was doing
I should have known when I felt you moving
I've never stopped thinking about you
and I never will forget that day.
The day I made the awful decision,
The day you went away.

(V)
My tears can never bring you back
no matter how many times I try, I can't.
I just hope one day you will forgive me
and give me a second chance.

The day I made the awful decision,
The day you went away

(C)

I'm sorry I was not strong enough to keep you,

I'm sorry that I let you go.

Maybe in another life I can hold your hand

and maybe you will understand.

Why it’s so hard to face the day ,

the day you went away.

If I'd Found You First

V1

You burst in the door uninvited

To a life I’d carefully planned

I’d know what to do with these feelings

If not for this wedding band

V2

It’s not that I don’t still love her

I believe in for better or worse

We built a life and it’s working

But I wish I’d found you first

Chorus

If I had found you

If I’d found you first

I’m turned inside out by this twist of fate

Now that I’ve found you, is it too late?

I know the past can’t be reversed

But if I’d found you first…

V3

The way I feel when I’m with you

Has stirred up my own private war

Is happy enough, enough for me?

Should I risk it all for more?

Chorus

If I had found you

If I’d found you first

I’m turned inside out by this twist of fate

Now that I’ve found you, is it too late?

I know the past can’t be reversed

But if I’d found you first…

Bridge
Love is supposed to be joyous

But my choices are filled with pain

A lifetime of guilt if I leave her

Heartache if I remain

Chorus

If I had found you

If I’d found you first

I’m turned inside out by this twist of fate

Now that I’ve found you, is it too late?

I know the past can’t be reversed

But if I’d found you first…

Little plastic soldiers

Little plastic soldiers

feeling unhappy

They’re tired of children's wars

and feeling crappy

They want to get back in their bucket

They want this game to end

They don't like being fighters

They just want to be friends

Interview the heroes

who won the war

But they stand there still,

cant do much more

They want to get back in their bucket

They want this game to end

They don't like being fighters

They just want to be friends

Then the kids are shocked to hear a squeaking

One of the soldiers has started speaking!

“We want to get back in our bucket

We want this game to end

We don't like being fighters

We just want to be friends”

When we were children

(Verse 1)

It was an early morning
Mist curled off the lake,
All was peaceful and silent
My heart carried no hate.
Here came the 20
Held my arm out straight,
My hair was a mess, but I was
Just glad not to be late.

(Verse 2)

An empty seat on a bus
When we were just kids
But could I sit next to you
Would it cause a fuss?
Your colours were grey
My colours were black
We knew what that meant, yes we did
Though outsiders would not.

(Chorus)
Enniskillen, Enniskillen
I remember when we were children

(Bridge)
Two sides of a coin that never should meet,
It takes strength to act and cross that gap.
I sat myself down, could sense the goons at the back,
I stared straight ahead and kept my mouth shut.
Now that I'm all grown up, I wish I had spoken,
A simple ‘hi’ would have done, I couldn't manage a croak then.

(Verse 3)

Now it’s another morning

I walk by the lake

Trees shadows frame the water

No painting as great.

Here comes the 20

Hold my arm out straight

Hair’s still a mess but, I guess that

Some things never change

(Verse 4)

An empty seat on the bus

When we were just kids

Wish I could speak to you

And damn any fuss.

Your colours were grey
My colours were black
We knew what that meant, sadly yes
Though outsiders would not.

(Chorus)
Enniskillen, Enniskillen
I remember when we were children

(Outro)

Our world fractured into a million shards of bomb blast

We were just children, innocence couldn’t last

I remember names read out with pictures on a screen

Parents broken and down on their knees

Grey slabs of concrete, blackness of heart

Gone in an instant, worlds torn apart

Sirens blaring, medics attempting a kiss

Of life but it’s too late for those we miss

Even the goons at the back
Both grey and black
They didn't want this
They didn't want this

No. They didn’t want this

There Is No Other Place Like Home

She wrote a letter to her mommy and Daddy

Telling them not to worry

To her Brothers and sisters she said

She’ll be coming home for sure

She hope they accept her don't ask her

To go back where she was before

(Chorus)

All that she'd been through

On the road, she thought she could had

Made it on her own, now she knows

There is no other place like home

Her sincere letter to her mommy and Daddy

She confessed She know she'd hurt

To her Brothers and sisters she wrote

She know she'd hurt them also

Did bad and she'd argued it was her

Who left and walked out the door

(Chorus)

All that she'd been through

On the road, she thought she could had

Made it on her own, now she knows

There is no other place like home

She said couldn't stand living down in the ghetto

Too many boys and girls are filled with sorrows

Children crying don’t know what will come tomorrow

Walking bare feet coming do the road

She said the guys out on the street they tried to involve me

But I swear unto God I didn't sniff any cocaine

I am myself that's what you'd always

Taught her to be, I’m only seventeen

(Chorus)

All that she'd been through

On the road, she thought she could had

Made it on her own, now she knows

There is no other place like home

Heart-Shaped Knife

(Chorus)

If you’re looking at my scars

You’ll read my story

If you’re looking at my scars

You’ll know my life

If you’re looking at my scars

You’ll understand the pain I feel

You’ll see for me

Love is a heart-shaped knife

Verse

When at first I give myself away

I hear the singing of an angel chorus

But time and time again out comes the blade

And cuts deep into me where I am softest

(Chorus)

If you’re looking at my scars

You’ll read my story

If you’re looking at my scars

You’ll know my life

If you’re looking at my scars

You’ll understand the pain I feel

You’ll see for me

Love is a heart-shaped knife

Heart-shaped knife

(4X)

(Verse)

There are times it seems a perfect match

I’m certain I’ll be treated with true kindness

And I don’t see the edges till they slash

’Cause when I love I'm plunged into blindness

If you’re looking at my scars

You’ll read my story

If you’re looking at my scars

You’ll know my life

If you’re looking at my scars

You’ll understand the pain I feel

You’ll see for me

Love is a heart-shaped knife

Heart-shaped knife

(4X)

(Bridge)

Some tell me I’m a glutton for punishment

Others say I must’ve lost my wits

My scars show where I’ve bled

But I just shake my head

I’m too in love with love

To ever quit

(Chorus)

If you’re looking at my scars

You’ll read my story

If you’re looking at my scars

You’ll know my life

If you’re looking at my scars

You’ll understand the pain I feel

You’ll see for me

Love is a heart-shaped knife

(Repeat)

Heart-shaped knife

Jealousy is a Loaded Gun

Verse 1

He arrived home late one night

Surprised his wife with an early flight

She thought she still had tomorrow

One more day would’ve held less sorrow

 Chorus

Stolen kisses are bitter sweet

Like lies whispered in passion’s heat

But there’s a cost for forbidden fun

Jealousy is a loaded gun

 Verse 2

A man needs rules in his life

Fences keep the strong alive

Plowing oxen one doesn’t own

Leads to a grave with no headstone

Chorus

Stolen kisses are bitter sweet

Like lies whispered in passion’s heat

But there’s a cost for forbidden fun

Jealousy is a loaded gun

Bridge

Six shots found their mark

Fire started from the bullet’s spark

In a jealous rage anger soared

House exploded with a fiery roar

Chorus

Stolen kisses are bitter sweet

Like lies whispered in passion’s heat

But there’s a cost for forbidden fun

Jealousy is a loaded gun

Lost In A Thought

Running thru a field of grass

Hoping this dream will last and last

Your perfume fills the air….

...The sun overhead halos your hair

We’re looking up to the sky

Watching the clouds drift by and by

Laughing at the funny shapes….

...Strata ships set sails for great escapes

Let’s stow away together,

On the clouds we’ll rendezvous

Just swept away,

Lost in a thought  with you

Let’s sail those ships together

Cast-aways, across the blue

Just swept away…………...

Lost in a thought - with you

Deep within your eyes

Higher than high on a chorus of sighs

Floating who knows where

I’ll live the dream with you on our way there

Facial

Well I guess it doesn't really matter

that we're not together anymore

I close my eyes and you're all that I see

Realize, you're the only one for me

'Cause you're the only one I'll ever love

The only woman that I'm dreaming of

The only one that can get me off

That's why I...

Put your face on every woman I fuck

So won't you tell me 'bout this guy you're now with

Does he know how I reminisce?

Does he get jealous?

Well tell him he's welcome to watch

me as I...

Put your face on every woman I fuck

'Cause you're the only girl that I'll ever love

The only woman I've been dreaming of

The only girl that can get me up

That's why I...

Put your face on every woman I fuck

But still my heart aches, babe

'Cause all I really want to do is

Put all those women's faces on you

The memory of you

V
I heard your voice today
It filled me with regret
It was a haunted thought
my mind had forgotten to forget
I felt Pieces of my life being pulled
Back into view
The Echoes from the past
Reminding me of you

[Chorus]
The memory of you
I thought I let it go
But I was lying to myself
My tears let me know
You still haunt my heart
You still make me blue
And I just can't put away
The memory of you

V
You always thought the worse
So I told an honest lie
This was A game I chose to play
Just to make some feathers fly
My defeated heart
And the anger of a fool
Both I left far behind
Except for memory of you

[Chorus]
The memory of you
I thought I let it go
But I was lying to myself
My tears let me know
You still haunt my heart
You still make me blue
And I just can't put away
The memory of you

V
I began a fight
That became a war
I only needed your love
But you walked out the door
When marriage vows became just words
And our hearts were torn in two
I swear that I can't breathe
Through the memory of you

[Chorus]
The memory of you
I thought I let it go
But I was lying to myself
My tears let me know
You still haunt my heart
You still make me blue
And I just can't put away
The memory of you

No, I just can't put away
The memory of you

The Rain

V1
I am the rain, baptiser of lovers
I bless all their secrets, the moments they share
Leaping off streetlamps, I dapple the light
That falls like a veil on their hair

V2
I am the rain, reminder of absence
I drop like a scourge, add to sorrow and fear
Lashing at windows, I whisper a name
And watch people drown in their tears

Chorus
All things to all humans
I’m seen as a blessing
While often to others
A shape-shifting curse
Yet I’ve no conscious choice
I fall where I fall
…Sometimes for better
Sometimes for worse

V3
I am the rain, the soul’s gentle healer
I melt away sadness, and cleanse you of grief
Peeling off memories that need to be gone
I fall on you, spilling relief

Chorus
All things to all humans
I’m seen as a blessing
While often to others
A shape-shifting curse
Yet I’ve no conscious choice
I fall where I fall
…Sometimes for better
Sometimes for worse

Bridge

Neither morning nor night

Neither dark, neither bright

I am what you make me

And each of you, always, is right

Chorus
All things to all humans
I’m seen as a blessing
While often to others
A shape-shifting curse
Yet I’ve no conscious choice
I fall where I fall
…Sometimes for better
Sometimes for worse

BE CAREFUL OF YOUR HEART

Be careful of your  heart

Protect it every day

Don' t try to keep it hidden

Let others in to play

And when you let those lovers in

Be kind and let them stay

Remember hearts are delicate

So don't give it away

Be patient with your heart

You'll find out where it wants to go

It may not show you what you want

But what it needs to grow

Although it doesn't listen

Just like a stubborn child

Don't shut it up away from light

'Cause hearts can grow up wild

Chorus:

We learn the world through sight and sound

But well beyond compare

Your heart's the one true instrument

Through which you learn to care

And when you understand this

You'll see that in the end

No matter how it happened

Your heart was your best friend

Be an older brother

A mother and a friend

And try to show your heart the way

To reach it's happy end

Give advice,  but don't insist

It  really doesn't work

Sit back and let your feelings flow

While your heart does  the work

And when your heart is older

Be ready for the break

And hold it oh so tenderly

To help it through the ache

Feed it tea and oranges

 And it will surely heal

Deeper and much wiser

From all its had to feel

Chorus:

We learn the world through sight and sound

 But well beyond compare

Your heart's the one true instrument

Through which you learn to care

And when you understand this

You'll see that in the end

No matter how it happened

Your heart was your best friend

Oh my goodness! I'm gobsmacked. :P Thanks, folks. :)

And well done, Patty and Paul. Really fine work. :)

Patty, yours was one of my top picks. It really captures the narrator's pain in such a not-too-uncommon dilemma.

Paul, I loved 'seeing' the movement in the piece as it went from the old man, to the two men (younger and old), and then to

the younger man. Perfect full circle. Nice tight write. Easily translatable into a song.

I really liked 'A Burden on Me' as well. Something about the emotional rawness and interesting imagery.

Mike, I got a big kick out of 'Let Yourself Go'.

And 'Little Plastic Soldier's was simple but - at least to me - poignant.

Altogether, what a great batch of lyrics, so diverse in theme, imagery, and mood.

Congratulations on a well deserved win, Donna. One of the best lyrics I've ever seen here.

Patty's lyric is another brilliantly captivating one that I just loved.

Paul's is superbly touching.

I liked a bunch more but won't name 'em all. Suffice it to say, talent abounds on the lyric board.

Thanks to iggy for helming the ship.

Seriously, Donna, I love lyrics that read like poetry. To me that's how they should be for the most part. Congrats on the win and thank you for the great lines.

Well done to Donna, Patty, and Paul! And to Iggy for organising another fun contest

I'm glad The Rain won - it got my top vote. Very poetic and tightly crafted lyric.

The other ones that I particularly liked were Heart Shaped Knife and Jealousy is a Loaded Gun

Thanks, @lyriCAL. I loved the unique image of a Heart Shaped Knife.

Thanks, @SongWolfe. Good storytelling in 'When We Were Children'. Deeply emotional. Sad times indeed.

@Moso Thank you. :)

Well done Donna (lovely imagery and flow) and Patty (great hook and you laser focus on it) - you were both atop my list.
I also had The Memory Of You, Heart Shaped Knife, While We Were Children, High, and More right up there.

What a great bunch of songs this month!

Congrats Donna and Patty. You were both my top picks, tied for first. The best seem to always make it to the top.

There were quite a few lyrics I really liked and after my top picks, I'll admit I had a hard time delegating different votes in those tiny incremental bites we're allowed. There were also a few that I thought were better than their placement in the contest. Fab's "When We Were Soldiers" for instance"  I had that one in my 3rd spot and the S's "A Burden on Me" got my second place. Both of them well written with good song potential.

Thanks for running this Iggy. I know from experience how much work is involved.

Thank you, everyone!  I am so honored to be in the company of Donna (very poetic) and Paul (great story, as usual)!  You are both masters of this lyric thing! I thought this month's entries were quite good. I also especially liked More (Ty Cobb),  All the Way to Jordan (Jonie) and Let Your Self Go (Clemo.)

I've taken to trying to figure out which one of the Musers wrote each one.  Didn't do very well on my guesses this month!  That's a probably a good thing!

Thank you, Iggy, for all the admin work!

@Moso I'm actually truly delighted

I would've been bothered had it been some middling ranking. The remarkable thing is how exceedingly popular it is among the crowds I play it to and how women, in particular, love to sing along with it. Maybe, it's the sophisticated musicality???

Well done to the winners. I must admit i looked at my own scores and noticed I had a few 4.5 scores which I thought was impressive. I thought "some people liked it".... then it dawned on me... I have the scoring backwards - I gave my scores in reverse of how much I enjoed the lyric.

It doesnt affect the overall scoring of the top three, but apologies to Teeporter because I liked your song so much I scored it a 4.0 :blush:

Congrats!!

A tough crowd, indeed. Things haven't changed much....I still dwell amongst the lower levels of the rebuked :P

But, as I have stated in the past, there's good company amongst us bottom dwellers.

I have noticed ,where the music tastes may change, as phases present themselves,....the lyrics crowd remains steadfast and consistent with the types of lyrics that garner praise.

Just an observation.......but, I will write them as the melody always dictates. That's my style....and it hasn't produced a winner , yet.......................................maybe, next one!! :D

Again, congrats to all that managed the top tier.

Incidentally, my stand out was............Art 1108's "The Day You Went Away". The lyric tackled a topic that is relevant; and, one that is taboo with most. Loved the unique and bold topic choice.

Did a pretty good job with writing a lyric that could be used for a melody writer, as well. Kudos!!!

There was one year when we had the "lyric of the year" vote, and I had 4 lyrics which were voted 1st, 2nd, 4th and 8th for the year.

I might not be at that peak level any more, but my decline from the top of these competitions is a source of surprise, a little bit of self reflection and disappointment. I think its that I write in a different style now than then.

I think for a lyric to do well in this competition, stripped of music, there are some qualities which make a lyric successful and others which are not so appreciated - I am not talking about this month, last month or any one month. I am talking in general.

General Qualities of a top competition lyric: tightly structured, rich in imagery and ideally poignant - All good qualities and unquestionably the winning lyrics are beautifully written. Under any judgement rules would be battling at the top- but there are other elements of a lyric which can work in a song but can get rough treatment in these competitions -

Great qualities which dont work well in a competition lyric : Repetition, Quirky "WTF" ideas, Superficial/Trivial, Puzzle lyrics (require extended thought before the ah-ha moment comes) .

I am not denigrating the lyrics competitions - I think we all enjoy them and love to throw our hats in the ring, and enjoy the different lyrics we get to read... but perhaps this observation can give some comfort for those of us scratching our heads - @Kerry Parr for example based on your comment. You shouldnt stop writing just because your entry is a clanger in this comp !

I should add that stating my observation is is also issuing myself a personal challenge - can I adjust my style for the top criteria and get myself a win or two? Until then I should probably shut up!! :-)

See everyone in April's competition!!! :-)

Kerry, in fact, I was one of those who gave it a 'good' score. ;) It started out in the lower range, but then on a second and third reading, I felt it fulfilled the criteria of flow, emotion, music-ready. And I particularly liked the twist at the end. I can well imagine a lot of women getting a kick out of it. ;)

Just listened to the song. Yep. I get the appeal. :P

I'd definitely be singing along. In fact, I'm going to keep singing along as I plan on playing that one a lot.

Your lyric didn't read the way it played, which is why a lyric is not a song and for that matter is not even a lyric until it meets its musicians and vocalist.  Lyrics as written words on a page require a completely different set of judging criteria than do lyrics as part of a song.

Your lyric is a 1.  Thank you for allowing me to hear it as it was intended.

Edit: I had to listen to it again. Damn, your vocals are hot and that song and its hook are highly addictive.

This was fun!!! :)

Congrats to the top scorers, well, congrats to all really, a great variety of lyrics and I must say the competition is fierce around these parts. Hehe!

I also thought it was really hard at times to "hear" the lyrics sung in my head, and I quickly realised how important it is, for all of us lyricists, that people who "read" our lyrics really get the rhythm of it, if they don't, the lyric could be lost on them. I mean, some words and phrasings makes perfect sense in a song, but read only, it could easily be missed and just look weird. Ah well, just an observation as a first timer in the lyric comp. Please, pay me no mind!!! ;)

Again, great fun, awesome bunch of lyrics from everyone and hats off to Iggy for hosting!

All the best,

Peter

Edit: Oh I completely forgot to say, I absolutely loved "The Rain"!!!! L O V E D it!!! My top score and it won, yeah!!!! More than well done Donna! I tip my hat.

That's a song with attitude, man, compounded by groove. Just reading the lyrics alone misses that. A lot of songs not just ride on but are built on the right attitude. This is partly why I don't feel I'm able to comment much on the lyrics-only section. I frequently need the groove or the attitude. I mean, I can try to superimpose my own, but evidentially, as we are witnessing right now, that doesn't always work.

Congratulations to the winners! Everyone who submitted did a great job just for putting themselves out there. It’s very hard to let your wall down and be vulnerable and share your artistic lyrics. I thought there were a lot of great songs. We have some talented lyricists. Thank you Ironknee for your kind words, it means a lot that you took the time to say something nice about my lyrics. I had a lot of favorites this time around  and Ironknee “Lost In A Thought” was one of them. Paul as usual you did an excellent job with “I Come Here Everyday”, I loved “The Memory of You”, “If I’d Found You First”, “The Rain” which was very poetic. So so so many good ones. I can’t wait for next month!

No need to shout out "Lost In A Thought".

I'm a veteran bottom dweller, when it comes to lyric contests :P.

My lyrics usually shine when the music is present.....which is where I write them, so it only makes sense :D

Thanks...for the thought!

Having run a few of these contests over the years, I started to wonder just how easy it would be to win.  So four or five years ago I decided to enter each monthly contest with a lyric I wrote specifically for the contest.  That meant, lyrics without writing music at the same time.  That also meant writing to the formula that appeared to win all the time.  My little experiment worked: I won, like, 7 of the 12 monthly contests, and came in 2nd or 3rd for the rest except for one where I came in dead last.  None of those lyrics ever became songs... except for the one that came in dead last.
