Collateral Beauty

Intro:
There is a place
light fears to shine

Past won't erase
and light never shines

Misery, sorrow
where light can not shine

There is no tomorrow
when light can not shine

Verse 1:
Sit down at the table
got some food for thought
a kind of mental existential
homemade booster shot

Is there a greater purpose?
Some hidden motivation?
A "why" for all the trials
and tribulation?

Maybe just abstractions
Love, Death, and Time
three universal truths
connecting mankind

We long for love
and fear our death
time moves too fast
towards that final breath

But warning, warning
you can't change fate
no matter how you plan it
and strive to cogitate

The sick get sicker
and bodies they decay
The child deep inside
won't come out to play

Forever lost
this black hole spins eternal
a collapsing cry
to Dante's fire infernal

Let the storm winds rage
as the dominoes fall
disappearing my soul
into nothing at all

Chorus:
See the collateral beauty
may it rise above the pain
in collateral beauty
your life begins again

Verse 2:
Cells, ancestry
and DNA
The recipe and map
for who we are today

But do our friends, family
and work define us?
What if we emanate light
passion and kindness?

To the fabric
of every single life we touch
Will finer things of money
even matter that much?

So smile and get lifted
to a higher plane
like an earworm carries catchy
little notes to your brain

You've been given a gift
for God's sake don't waste it
The buffet's still open
just walk up and taste it

Chorus:
See the collateral beauty
may it rise above the pain
in collateral beauty
your life begins again

Outro:
The collateral beauty
collateral beau...u...u...u...ty
The collateral beauty
collateral beau...u...u...u...ty

Black And White Days

(V1)

Back in the days when life was black and white

Work was murder grafting every day and night

The homeless slept in doorways the righteous prayed

The poor starved to death while the upper class played.

(Ch)

In the black and white days, life was tough for working folk

So little on the table, we could just barely cope

We were all short of money, but there was plenty soft soap

Back in the black and white days

(V2)

Then very slowly lifestyle started to change

Not all for the good, we still got a basic wage

The food on the table filled our plates ok

Life was better than the black and white days

(Ch)

In the black and white days, life was tough for working folk

So little on the table, we could just barely cope,

We were all short of money, but there was plenty soft soap

Back in the black and white days

(Br)

I was becoming more socially aware

We were no longer stuck in the poverty snare

Cinema was fab in its technicolor phase

Gone for good were the black and white days

(Ch)

In the black and white days, life was tough for working folk

So little on the table, we could just barely cope,

We were all short of money, but there was plenty soft soap

Back in the black and white days

(V3)

In these multicolor days we fear for our life

Fanatics with bombs and guns or a knife

Global warming horrors. Man's polluting craze

Was life better in the black and white days

(Ch)

In the black and white days, life was tough for working folk

So little on the table, we could just barely cope

We were all short of money, but there was plenty soft soap

Back in the black and white days

(Final)

Life was better, in the black and white days.

Vacation

Verse 1

Feels like we're in Tahiti

Sipping on something fruity

Laying in the white sand

Working on our sun tan

But really we're just hanging out

Eating popcorn on the couch

Watching some old TV show

Girl you already know

Chorus

You make me wanna,

Call the man, tell him I can't

Make it into work today

You're want me eyes, and kiss me smile

Has always been my get away

You make me wanna,

Hop a train, board a plane

Spend the day on an island

Book a suite, for you and me

Get lost in the moment

What i'm trying to say, in the most romantic way

That I can

Is you make every day, feel like a

Vacation

Verse 2

Oh, I'm in Cancun

Every time I'm with you

Watching blue waves roll in

I can almost feel it

Splashing on my feet

You're body's like a beach

And you know me

That's where I wanna be

Chorus

You make me wanna,

Call the man, tell him I can't

make it into work today

You're want me eyes, and kiss me smile

Has always been my get away

You make me wanna,

Hop a train, board a plane

Spend the day on an island

Book a suite, for you and me

Get lost in the moment

What I'm trying to say, in the most romantic way

That I can

Is you make every day, feel like a

Vacation

Music Instrumental (Guitar Solo)

Chorus

You make me wanna,

Call the man, tell him I can't

make it into work today

You're want me eyes, and kiss me smile

Has always been my get away

You make me wanna,

Hop a train, board a plane

Spend the day on an island

Book a suite, for you and me

Get lost in the moment

What i'm trying to say, in the most romantic way

That I can

Is you make every day, feel like a

Yeah, you make every day, feel like a

Vacation

Frostbite

There’s a girl in town who the boys all know.

And they talk about her everywhere she go.

Though she’s looking good oh but soon ya learn

First its pins and needles then your skin will burn

If you don’t stand clear    when she comes into sight

You might get too near    and catch      frostbite!

(Frostbite) Your skin is gonna freeze

(Frostbite) Your nose is gonna sneeze

(Frostbite) You’re gonna get the shakes

(Frostbite) One touch is all it takes

(Frostbite) You’re gonna lose sensation

(Frostbite) She’s got that reputation

(Frostbite) She comes on pretty nice

(Frostbite) But her heart’s as cold    as ice.

The guys and me     think you oughta know

Messing with her     is like rolling in snow

In a raging blizzard    when it’s ten below.

Don’t think  you’re gonna  change her.

Don’t put yourself in danger.

Just take some cold advice from a warm hearted stranger

So listen up boys and don’t be surprised

A chill’s in the air. A word to the wise

She’s got ice water     running through her veins

And some guys have tried     but she can’t be tamed.

If you don’t stand clear   when she comes in sight

You might get too near     and catch       frostbite!

(Frostbite) Your skin is gonna freeze

(Frostbite) Your nose is gonna sneeze

(Frostbite) You’re gonna get the shakes

(Frostbite) One touch is all it takes

(Frostbite) You’re gonna lose sensation

(Frostbite) Shes got that reputation

(Frostbite) She comes on pretty nice

(Frostbite) But her heart’s    as cold     as ice.

Frostbite  (Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr)        (Fadeout)

Frostbite.  (Her-r-r-r)

Frostbite    (Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr)

Frostbite.  (Her-r-r-r)

Frostbite   (Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr)

Frostbite.  (Her-r-r-r)

Take My Hand

V
A hot Georgia summer is all it took
For us to fall in love like they do In the storybooks
I was sitting there having a drink
When he walked by and gave me a wink
With a smile on his face and a story to tell
My heart skipped a beat and I fell under his spell

(Chorus)

He said take my hand girl and never look back
I’ve got you now just relax
There’s a place for us where no one knows
A place where only our love can grow

V
With our feet in the water and a drink in our hand
The radio was playing our favorite band
This feeling in my heart felt so right
I knew it had to be love at first sight
The sun was shining as we talked about life
before we knew it , it was already night

(Chorus)
He said take my hand girl and never look back
I’ve got you now just relax
There’s a place for us where no one knows
A place where only our love can grow

V
The night finally came to an end
We knew this was a love you couldn’t pretend
We walked off the dock and onto the shore
It was the beginning of something much more
I didn’t want to say goodbye
so I took his hand and gave it a try
Saying.....

(Chorus)
Come with me boy and never look back
I’ve got you now just relax
There’s a place for us where no one knows
A place where only our love can grow

My Man of Few Words

V1

My man’s not a talkative fellow

He thinks sentiment’s for the birds

He’s good at expressing his feelings

He just doesn’t put them in words

V2

I would never try to change him

Always knew how he was

He doesn’t have to say a thing

I hear the words in what he does

Chorus

When he washes my car, that’s I love you

When he brings me my tea, You’re the best

That smile means You’re beautiful

His devotion says the rest

He shows me he cares by his actions

I don’t need the nouns and the verbs

I’ve learned how to speak his language

How to read my man of few words

V3

When I think of the way he treats me

There’s no one that I would prefer

I’d rather have my man of action

Than a man who just loves me with words

Chorus

When he washes my car, that’s I love you

When he brings me my tea, You’re the best

That smile means You’re beautiful

His devotion says the rest

He shows me he cares by his actions

I don’t need the nouns and the verbs

I’ve learned how to speak his language

How to read my man of few words

Bridge:

He can build a dock, fix the clock,

Fire up the wok, and change a lock

But when it comes to sayin’ he loves me

The man in my life doesn’t talk

Chorus

When he washes my car, that’s I love you

When he brings me my tea, You’re the best

That smile means You’re beautiful

His devotion says the rest

He shows me he cares by his actions

I don’t need the nouns and the verbs

I’ve learned how to speak his language

How to read my man of few words

When I think of you

V
I do know that Some broken hearts will mend; that painful memories can end
Sleepless nights will disappear
And you will see more clear
Because

Chorus
When I think of you
We are always young
No regrets; well, maybe some
Quiet conversations we never out grew
You giving me a kiss; well, maybe two
I think of nothing else
When I think of you

V
I do know that new dreams will begin, if we just let the broken ones end
Old loves give away to new; doesn’t mean I stopped loving you
Because

Chorus

When I think of you
We are always young
No regrets; well, maybe some
Quiet conversations we never out grew
You giving me a kiss; well, maybe two
I think of nothing else
When I think of you

V
I do know that some loves can last; it doesn’t matter how many years may have past
Ordinary, no extraordinary, this life can be
moments that make me believe
Because

chorus
We I think of you
We are always young
No regrets; well maybe some
Quiet conversations we never outgrew
You giving me a kiss; well maybe two
I think of nothing else
When I think of you

That Empathetic Man

Could I walk a hundred miles on the soles of broken shoes?

Could I lose everything I’ve ever had to lose?

Could I sleep aside a road?

Could I dream, shivering cold?

Could I be that homeless face, weathered and old?

Well, I once was known as a man who gave a dam,

The kind of guy who would strive to understand.

But, as the country, now, bemoans

White guilt and comfort zones…….

It’s getting hard to be that empathetic man.

Would I stand, could I face, those hateful hearts of stone?

Could I practice what I preach when I stand alone?

Would I kick the man that’s down?

Or, would I help him off the ground?

Could I show mercy when the tables turn around?

Well, I once was known as a man who gave a dam,

The kind of guy who would strive to understand.

But, when you berate this great country

With a finger and a knee

It’s getting hard to be that empathetic man.

The Perfect Line

(Intro)

Oooo kay

First find something to say that's not cliche

Then choose the exact right time

Until then, try again and again

Till I've crafted the perfect line

V 1

I better not wait until it’s too late

So I gather up all my nerve

And design of the perfect line

Not a fastball but more of a curve

There like a star shining at the bar

Her face aglow in the dingy light

I’m peeking through from every view

I could be sitting here all night

V 2

Now here I go but I still don't know

Maybe she’s way out of my league

But she owns my eyes so I gotta try

I can't just sit here with only intrigue

Now's the time for the perfect line

She looks at me as I start to shrink

I can't speak and start to freak

She whispers may I buy you a drink

V 3

I tell her yes   I like your dress

She looks at me with big blue eyes

My mind goes numb;  who's that dumb?

Please oh God   just let me die!

She smiles again to let me in

Then reaches over to touch my hand

The perfect line falls outta my mind

But it turns out better than I had planned

(Outro)

Ya know I had the perfect line

Set up there in front of my mind

Where it had gone I’ll never know

But now she’s with me wherever I go

Once upon a time

(Intro)

Once upon a time the west was wild

Every gringo knew the lingo of the gun and knife

(Verse 1)

But all the cowboys are buried underneath the ground
In the desert you'll sometimes hear the sound
Of hooves, rolling thunder
From the herds that were run there
The crack of the bullets fired into the sky.

(Verse 2)
Yeah, all the cowboys are buried underneath the sod
They've long since found out if there is a God
Now cars, rolling thunder
From the tourists who come there
The snap of cameras for a silver screen lie.

(Chorus)

Tell me how the west was won
What was lost and what'll become
Plaques upon walls
Their portraits hanging in halls
Kids twirling plastic guns

Once upon a time

Once upon a time

(Bridge)

(Spoken)

Listen, this is how it really was...

(Sung)
I got dirt in my boots
I got sunburn on my face,
Getting paid a pittance
It's the boss man who takes,
All the money, all the glory

Whilst I'm lame and saddle sore,
Just saving a few coins

So I can lay with some cheap whore.
I ain't Billy the Kid
Don't have a cool name,
Live for forty years if I'm lucky
With no chance of lasting fame.
And if I stray from the narrow
They'll hang me from up high,
Till my legs stop a kickin'
Under this bastard sky.

(Chorus)

Tell me how the west was won
What was lost and what'll become
Plaques upon walls
Their portraits hanging in halls
Kids twirling plastic guns

Once upon a time

Once upon a time

(Verse 3 – repeat of verse 1)

Yeah, all the cowboys are buried underneath the ground
In the desert at night you'll sometimes hear the sound
Of hooves, rolling thunder
From the herds that were run there
The crack of the bullets fired into the sky.

(Outro)

Once upon a time the west was wild

Every gringo knew the lingo of the gun and knife

White Valentine

V

A white valentine

The color of death

Arrived in the mail

Drained of emotion

Will you be mine

That was the question

A white valentine

Seeking devotion

PC

A memory that feels like a crime

This white valentine

CH

Take me

Far away

From the past

To a place

Oh, take me

Far away

That I may

Find peace and grace

At last

And free my troubled mind

From this white valentine

V

Should I send back

A poison love letter

Will that be the end

Or is this a game

When love turns to hate

It’s cruel and it hurts

If I only knew how

I’d stop all this pain

PC

A moment still frozen in time

This white valentine

CH

Take me

Far away

From the past

To a place

Oh, take me

Far away

That I may

Find peace and grace

At last

And free my troubled mind

From this white valentine

BR

I wish I had never let you inside

You made your home in my bed

I feel I’ve been drained of all of my life

I might have been better off dead

 (pause)

I would have been better off dead

CH

Take me

Far away

From the past

To a place

Oh, take me

Far away

That I may

Find peace and grace

At last

And free my troubled mind

From this white valentine

A Promise Made

We spent a summer week in Wyoming

She worked the horses at the ranch

And me trying to be a cowboy

Chewing on a sagebrush branch

Just a couple of kids in teenage love

Knowing the summer would soon end

We snuggled and counted shooting stars

I’d slip in a kiss every now and then

Pre-ch:

I knew leaving wasn’t easy

Wiped a tear from the corner of her eye

Ch:

I promised her I’d be back

She said she’d wait

I promised her I would write

She said she’d like that

We hugged as I waited for the bus

She whispered in my ear

I’m holding you to

A promise made

V:

It’s been 8 summers maybe she’s still there

Probably not though she said she’d wait

I never wrote or bothered to call

Could only hope t’wasn’t  too late

Pre-ch:

I remembered what I promised

And could still hear the words she whispered

Ch:

I promised her I’d be back

She said she’d wait

I promised her I would write

She said she’d like that

We hugged as I waited for the bus

She whispered in my ear

I’m holding you to

A promise made

Br:

I finally wrote

But my letter came back

Not giving up now

Gonna put that letter in her hand

Ch:

I promised her I’d be back

Prayed she’d still be waiting

I promised her this letter

Hoping she’d like that

I’ll be coming in on that bus

To whisper in her ear

I’m keeping my word of

A promise made

A promise made

You Light a Fire

We playin’ a dangerous game, we can’t pretend

My wife is your sister, your husband’s my friend

But the taste of your kiss is too hard to resist

Never thought I’d get turned upside down like this

CH

Cuz you light a fire

That burns up my mind

If I said I could quit you

Girl, I’d be lyin’

I wanna break every rule

And cross every line

Oh you light a fire

That burns up my mind

I’ve gone too far already, there’s no turning back

I’m strung out on you, girl that’s the fact

I know it’s wrong, but the hungers too strong

I wanna stay with you, lay with you all night long

CH

Cuz you light a fire

That burns up my mind

If I said I could quit you

Girl, I’d be lyin’

I wanna break every rule

And cross every line

Oh you light a fire

That burns up my mind

(Instrumental)

I’m gonna split up two homes, I’m gonna damage two lives

This pain that I’m causin’ is a terrible price

I might burn in hell but I’m under this spell

Givin’ in to my passion in a no-name motel

Br

If I could take it all back

Start over again

I’d still pray to be

Next to your naked skin

CH

Cuz you light a fire

That burns up my mind

If I said I could quit you

Girl, I’d be lyin’

I wanna break every rule

And cross every line

Cuz you light a fire

That burns up my mind

Yeah, you light a fire

That burns up my mind

The Trouble Is

Alzheimer's is a terrible disease
It can run off with the ones you love, steal their memories
So when I visit Dad, I see his distant eyes
And I know I'm just another face he doesn't recognize

He talks of Mom like she is still around
But it's nearly 30 years ago we laid her in the ground
He'd not be very safe now living on his own
But the trouble is: he thinks he'll soon be home

ch
And he tells me how he sees her standing there
With her Mona Lisa smile,
And her Judy Garland hair
Says she's busy in the kitchen, makin' supper on the stove
And the trouble is: he thinks he'll soon be home

I'll spare you all the grief of when he died
Suffice to say I kissed his cheek goodbye, then I cried
I knew that I'd soon lose him, but if the truth were known
The trouble is..
Yeah, the trouble is..
I lost him years ago

.....instr...

I have no faith in what Preachers say will happen to our souls
But the trouble is: I'm sure he'll make it home

And he'll hold her in his arms when he gets there
Kiss her Mona Lisa smile,
Touch her Judy Garland hair
They'll supper in the kitchen, catch up beside the stove
Though it contradicts most everything I know
The trouble is I'm sure he'll make it home

Yes it contradicts..
the way I stick..
to everything I know

But the trouble is..
The trouble is..
The trouble is..
I know he's made it home.

Goodbye, Saigon

Verse

I came eager to serve

Eager to fight

Eager to prove that right is right

I was gonna make the world a safer place

In the earliest months

Battling nerves

Cautious when rounding every curve

Trying to keep the fear off my dirty face

What the generals said

Twisted the truth

Clear to us wearing combat boots

Hidden dangers every time we left our base

(Chorus 1)

I was a varsity football wide receiver

A red-white-and-blue true believer

Ready to die if my uncle said the word

Now I’m standing on this rooftop with my gun out

Praying the bullets will not run out

Planning to be the last one on that bird

(Chorus 2)

Goodbye, Saigon

Time to move on

I’m done shedding angry tears

Goodbye, Saigon

Life just rolls on

No one can make up for those years

And all I wanna do is disappear

Verse

I bet they shook like me

Some were still boys

A bamboo leaf makes the loudest noise

When it flutters down before a firefight

It grew harder to sleep

Nightmares of blood

Twisted up bodies in the mud

We had every right to kill exactly why?

What the general said

On the TV

We destroy their towns to set them free

Mighta been a trial to tell them eye-to-eye

(Chorus 1)

I was a varsity football wide receiver

A red-white-and-blue true believer

Ready to die if my uncle said the word

Now I’m standing on this rooftop with my gun out

Praying the bullets will not run out

Planning to be the last one on that bird

(Chorus 2)

Goodbye, Saigon

Time to move on

I’m done shedding angry tears

Goodbye, Saigon

Life just rolls on

No one can make up for those years

And all I wanna do is disappear

(Bridge)

I still see my brothers’ faces in the clouds

I still hear their voices in the rain

If I had to do it

Had to do it

I wouldn’t do it again

(Instrumental)

(Chorus)

Goodbye, Saigon

Time to move on

I’m done shedding angry tears

Goodbye, Saigon

Life just rolls on

No one can make up for those years

And all I wanna do is disappear

(Repeat)

Playing Dead

V1

I long to learn the wildness ways

The alchemy of nights and days

The secrets in the wonders all around me

V2

I long to learn the human soul

Bring back the part religion stole

And lose the claims of science that impound me

Bridge

So I’ll get my hands dirty

I’ll watch the plants grow

While in soft leafy whispers

They tell what they know

And guide me away from the world and its dread

Lead to a path back to healing instead

Till at last I’m at home

…And if you should ask

Why I’m still as a stone

…Like the rocks in my garden

I’m just playing dead

V3

I long to know how water sings

Where spirits dwell in lakes and springs

I want a tribe of naiads to astound me

V4

I long to know what mountains dream

What every woodland’s heard and seen

And hold the heart of wisdom once it’s found me

Outro

And if you should ask

Why I’m still as a stone

…Like the rocks in my garden

I’m just playing dead

Big Brother’s Watching

(We’re all going to die)

Verse 1

He sees the world turn

perched high in his place

Watches enemies burn

With a smile on his face

Verse 2

From his fiendish rule

There is no escape

He’s got the tools

There’s no debate

Chorus

Satellites circle

Armed drones fill the sky

Big Brother’s watching

We’re all going to die

Verse 3

Disagree if you want to

Scoff at these words

Big Brother’s wily and shrewd

Everything said is heard

Chorus

Satellites circle

Armed drones fill the sky

Big Brother’s watching

We’re all going to die

Bridge

Talk of the kingdom

Gets your name on a list

What’s happened to freedom?

Did it ever exist?

Chorus

Satellites circle

Congratulations to Peko Gary Graybeard and Art and Paul and LyriCal. Well done. Art, in case you're unaware, you're in great company there with Paul and LyriCal. Great lyrics. I thought for sure Donna would be on the podium this month, though. Shame about Empathetic Man too; it could have been a contender.

There were a lot of top notch lyrics this month.  I'd say we're off to a good start this year. Thanks for MC-ing Iggy.

Well done, Peko. :) You and SongWolfe ('Once Upon A Time') had my top votes.

Altogether, a tremendous selection of lyrics. It really was difficult making choices.

Now, onwards to the February contest. ;)

Great Lyrics by everyone.  I especially loved Frostbite.  I thought it was great!  Art, your lyrics also topped my list.

I agree, lets get to February's contest.

I enjoyed a lot of the lyrics in this months contest. Frostbite definitely was at the top of my list. I loved the lyrics on that one along with My Man of Few Words, When I Think of You, Goodbye, Saigon (which brought me to tears) , and Trouble is (which also brought me to tears). I can’t wait for next months contest!

Oh, my!  I just got home and saw this!  Unbelievable!  Congratulations to Gary Hale and Graybeard, as well as the rest of you. I thought the entries were really top notch this month, and didn't expect mine to compare well, so this is a real thrill (and surprise!) for me.  I thought You Light A Fire was REALLY good, and I liked Frostbite and That Empathetic Man, Once Upon a Time, White Valentine, The Trouble Is, and The Perfect Line.  Actually, they were all very good!  Thank you for your votes and support. Keeps me going!

Congratulations to Patty, Gary and graybeard! My favorite this month was Donna's with Patty's lyric next. I agree with everyone who says this was a strong bunch of lyrics. It makes me happy to see all the talent on display here month after month. And it's especially good to see some names I haven't seen before.

Thanks to everyone who had a kind word about Goodbye, Saigon.

And a huge thanks, once again, to iggy for running the show!

Cheers!

Oh (expletive)....I thought I had tonight to send Iggy my scores :-( Sorry, folks....I have been very busy, and time had gotten away from me.

Thanks for the mentions, however........my lyrics usually don't stand on their own too well in these contests (but, I've been working on that!).......thanks!

Just a bad deal, with me....again, sorry. I only read the first four lyrics and didn't even get to the others. But, I'll finish what I started and report a little later ;-)

TTFN,

Well done to Patty and also to Gary and Greybeard.

A rare occasion where my top picks matched the final positions. I had 'My man of few words' and 'You light a fire' as my joint favourites. Others that stood out were 'Take my hand', 'The trouble is' and 'White Valentine'. Lots of good entries this month!

Excellent contest this month. Congratulations to Peko for a great lyric!

Thanks all for liking You Light a Fire. Happy it was well received.

I really liked Vacation by my buddy and favorite writer Tee Porter. Thought it was well written and very contemporary. Also liked White Valentine a lot as well as Goodbye, Saigon, Playing Dead and Big Brother. Don’t think there was one lyric entered that wasn’t impressive. Great contest. Thanks Iggy.
