Life Insurance Blues

kuya

V1

It all went kinda down hill, 'round  the 3rd or 4th wife.
The more i earn the more i pay. I can't afford my life!
I owe so much damn money, I'm in over my head.
Don't think i haven't noticed, m'worth less alive than dead!

CH

I got the life insurance. I got the life insurance blues.

My children pay the premiums, n'my exes buy me booze.
Non-filters by the carton. That's the life insurance blues.

V2

My kids, they look me over, and ask me how I feel.
They tampered with my seatbelt, and put stuff in my meals.
I know what makes them happy. I try to cough a lot.
But if they knew I'm feeling well, they'd probably have me shot!

CH

I got the life insurance. I got the life insurance blues.
My children pay the premiums, n'my exes buy me booze.
Non-filters by the carton. Yes that's the life insurance blues.

V3

Some people say I'm worthless. My kids, they disagree.
They call me an investment. Say you just wait and see!
I sleep with one eye open. I always walk behind.
My kids all watch forensic files. I know what's on their mind!

V4/CH

They think they're so damn clever, but they ain't fooling me.
Someday i might just kill myself, to void their policy!
(haha)They'll get the life insurance.(haha) They'll get the life insurance blues.

February Winner

those that could stood

JWallace

v1
" how's things down at the mill"
broke the silence that consumed
   another day that I spent
with my father in his room
   assisted living is the title
of the new place he calls home
   seamed like the only answer
now that he's all alone
A local church had stopped in
on this lonesome july the fourth
to sing some songs and serve a meal
and just show a little support
as we all gathered on the front lawn
and the national anthem began to play
I looked around through tear-filled eyes
and couldn't help but be amazed

c1
   those that could stood
those that couldn't tried
   no one sat in protest
or got up and went inside
   talk about a peaceful feeling
with no hatred to devide
   just a moment to remember
and a heart filled with pride
those that could, stood on that fourth of july

v2
as I made my way home that night
fireworks filled the sky
   I thought about 9-11
and I just kept wondering why
it took such an awful act
to bring us together all as one
   I thought about those heros
too brave to turn and run
   those fire men and police
with their faces painted grey
and of those that didn't make it out
on that sad september day
c2
   Those that could stood
those that couldn't tried
   as a helpless world watched
and a great nation cried
   No one sat in protest
there was no black or white
   just a patriotic moment
forever frozen in my mind
   those that could stood
on a sad september night
v3
   thinking back on my day
as I laid in bed that night
   I couldn't help but believe
some day we'll get it right
if we look for common ground
instead of just choosing sides
there's no problem that's too big
no mountains too high
so thank God for your freedom
Thank a soldier when you can
   And think about one another
and if you can...stand

It’s All in the Stars

iggy

V1

It's the pull of the moon

Of Saturn and Mars

The braid of their orbits

Tangled in stars

The path of each planet

We want to believe

Determines our future

And what we'll achieve

Chorus:

It's all in the stars

That burn clear and bright

We're dreaming the secrets

They whisper each night

V2

We take what we're given

With all we've been taught

Remembering lessons

From hard battles fought

Compelled by beliefs

We've learned to obey

Sometimes we hunt

And sometimes we're prey

V3

That hot smell of money

Sweet honey of fame

Poisons our wisdom

And darkens love's flame

The pressure of work,

Those hard nights alone

The ringing, by chance

Of a small telephone

Chorus:

It's all in the stars

That burn clear and bright

We're dreaming the secrets

They whisper each night

V4

We live in this chaos

Each path is unique

Lurching and stumbling

The strong and the weak

Riding down rivers

Through which our time flows

Taking us finally

To where we must go

Bridge:

So howl at the moon

As you rise with the tide

From your first startled cries

To your breathless goodbye

Chorus:

It's all in the stars

That burn clear and bright

We're dreaming the secrets

They whisper each night

Here on Vacation

kuya

I got a touristy tee shirt; a sunburned nose.
A pair of old flip flops with sand on my toes
All these babes in bikinis with sex on their mind.
And 7 more days to completely unwind.

Cuz i'm...

here on vacation. forget all your woes.
here on location,  and anything goes.
Here on vacation. Don't ask me the time.
Sheer jubilation: Coronas and lime.

I...

Got some Mexican beer and some Cuban cigars,
Some single malt Scotch and Hawaiian guitars.
There's at least a good mile on this unexplored beach
No cell phones or wi-fi; I'm so out of reach.

Yes I'm....

Here on vacation. with beautiful views.
It's pure relaxation. I might even snooze
here on vacation, the weather's just fine
Just pure relaxation. The sun always shines.

They say a man might tire of this.  I guess I'll never know.
They're expecting a Nor'easter, Back home it's ten below.

That's why...

I'm here on vacation. The party just grows.
For rejuvenation there's wet tee shirt shows.
My yearly ration of feeling no pain.
Cold ones and ganja, I'm out of my brain.

I'm here on vacation. Here on vacation.

Mustard Fields of Southwold

fabkebab

Among the blazing fields of mustard
Iridescent golden glow
Car engine revving over
The sound of seventies radio
The feeling as we saw ahead us
The blue horizon of the sea
Rising over the the coastal hills
It was wonderful and worry free

Southwold
Town of my childhood
Running through the dunes
Lighthouse, kites balloons
Miles of sea
calling a spirit in me
Southwold

Bundle out with a picnic lunch
Run through dunes and pebbly sand
Wind picking at my legs
Plastic shovel in my hand
After hours of play my mum would call
Out of the sea to eat our lunch
Beef and mustard sandwiches
Sand would make each mouthful crunch

Southwold
Town of my childhood
Running through the dunes
Lighthouse, kites balloons
Miles of sea
calling a spirit in me
Southwold

Well I live far away these days
Havent been since my parents died
But sometimes I fire up google maps
Take myself on a little ride
Mustard fields, the beach the shore
In a way it's like i'm back once more
A family riding in the car
The things that make us who we are

Southwold
Town of my childhood
Running through the dunes
Lighthouse, kites balloons
Miles of sea
calling a spirit in me
Southwold

Portraits of war

SongWolfe

(Verse 1)
I sketch a calloused face
Eyes still glint despite the pain,
Mud runs like mascara
Tear drop tracks made by the rain.
The bombs explode like fireworks
As we shoot the jolly breeze,
And young Johnston's in the corner
Looking like he's just asleep.

(Chorus)
Portraits of war
Portraits of war
Life's a bloody canvass
Tell me what we're dying for?

(Bridge)
As the fires burn
And the dying cry,
I sketch out well worn faces
Under a darkened sky.
As my pages run out
And my pencil stub blunts,
I look back at all the names
It feels like years, been just months.

(Chorus)
Portraits of war
Portraits of war
Life's a bloody canvass
Tell me what we're dying for?

(Verse 2)
I don't see any hate
Hearts still beat despite the pain,
We trust to each other
I'd carry you, you'd do the same.
The guns chatter like old friends
As we wear holes in our knees,
I hear Eddie’s lost an arm
The fare to get home isn't cheap.

(Chorus)
Portraits of war
Portraits of war
Life's a bloody canvass
Tell me what we're dying for?

(Verse 3)

I put down my notepad
Lest I bleed upon the page,
Sarge asks me if I'm all right
But he's just an actor on a stage,
Portraits of war
Portraits of war
I stare down at my dark countenance
Like I've never seen myself before.

Hello Piano

Paul Canuck

Hello Piano
May I sit with you a spell?
My mind's been through a lot today
But my heart has been though hell
Your keys feel so familiar in my hands
It's so nice to find you waiting here
To comfort an old friend

Oh, my Piano
That funeral was tough
The more I tried to hold my tears
The more they wouldn't stop
And people searching for a caring word
Just echoed "Sorry for your loss"
Their eyes fixed on the floor

{pre}
But you know what I came here for..

{ch}
Let's play a song that lifts us far from here
That frolics in fond memories, and lives in joyful years
We'll leave this sad and senseless day behind
For at least a little time
At least a little time...

{instr}

So now, Piano
Guess I'll close you now and go
Though I'd love to spend forever here
There are those I must console
You've helped me keep this darkened cloud at bay
Consumed me with your magic
Just like every time we play

So I'll be back here soon, to say..

Hello Piano
Let's play a song that lifts us far from here
That frolics in fond memories, and lives in joyful years
We'll leave this sad and senseless world behind
For at least a little time
At least a little time

I Remember Little River

graybeard

Daddy used to take me down to Little River

Where black water runs and sunfish swim

Warm sandy banks, water cool in the summer

I remember Little River, when I think of him

We’d stand on the bank beneath tall willows

Bamboo poles held firm in our hands

Watching orange corks dance with silver minnows

To woodland songs by Nature’s band

I recollect once, a big snapping turtle

Took my bait and hunkered down

Beneath the stump of an old Crepe Myrtle

Snapped my line with a cracking sound

Right by my side, dad came to the rescue

He replaced my line, sinker, and hook

Orange bobber danced like it was brand new

And we soon had a stringer of fish to cook

Life’s going to be what it’s going to be

We spread dad’s ashes beneath an old willow tree

Black water took him to where sunfish swim

I remember Little River when I think of him.

Yes, I remember Little River when I think of him

Bullets and Lovers

Eric Borgos

Verse 1:
It started out small
first a watch, then a hat
snuck out of the store
was as easy as that

Next came a car
then a small liquor store
every new hit
left them thirsting for more

More money
more power
eating life's buffet
much better to burn out
than fade away

Chorus:
Bullets and lovers
danger and lies
we all live in a world
where everyone dies

No chance for salvation
just waiting in vain
the light at the end of the tunnel
is sometimes a train

Verse 2:
Soon they were famous
plastered on the news page
the people they hurt
the heists they had made

No rules to this game
just the thrill of the ride
crossing that line
down into the dark side

Wild and reckless
they just wanted some fun
partners in crime
living life on the run

Chorus:
Bullets and lovers
danger and lies
we all live in a world
where everyone dies

No chance for salvation
just waiting in vain
the light at the end of the tunnel
is sometimes a train

No hope for salvation
just waiting in vain
we cry in the darkness
and live with the pain

If I Never Find That Heaven

Donna Marilyn

V1

I’ll move the moon to look behind it

I’ve heard fine tales of Paradise

Silver trees and golden meadows

I want to see with my own eyes

V2

I’ll brave the sun before I’m blinded

I’ll ask directions to the Gate

Where perhaps old friends and lovers

Have kept their promises to wait

Chorus

But if I never find that heaven

I’ll lay me down among the stones

And let the singing silence lull me

Till I’m dust and bones

V3

I’ll search the stars, and I won’t mind it

If I’ve a long, long way to go

Just the hope there is an Eden

Will be enough for me to know

Chorus

But if I never find that heaven

I’ll lay me down among the stones

And let the singing silence lull me

Till I’m dust and bones

Bridge

Often in dreams I unfurl my wings

Feeling my place in the wildness of things

Unfettered by any constraints

Far beyond human complaints

…And I fly

…Like an angel, how I will fly

Chorus

But if I never find that heaven

I’ll lay me down among the stones

And let the singing silence lull me

Till I’m dust and bones

Repeat chorus

But if I never find that heaven

I’ll lay me down among the stones

And let the singing silence lull me

Till I’m dust and bones

Friendship Hurts If You Do It Right

Peko

V1

We were best friends all through grade school

Brave explorers in the park

Built a fort down by the river

She was Lewis, I was Clark

Then her Daddy got a new job

First time I encountered fate

I learned something about friendship

I did not anticipate

Chorus

Friendship hurts if you do it right

One of you leaves, one stays behind

You understand why and you’ll always be friends

But it’s never the same when the day-to-day ends

Friendship hurts, friendship hurts

Friendship hurts if you do it right

V2

Jennie stormed in like a SWAT team

We shared books and boys and beer

Listening to her secrets

Was like looking in the mirror

She stayed on to get her master’s

I took a job out on the coast

When I hear two girlfriends laughing

That’s when I miss her the most

Chorus

Friendship hurts if you do it right

One of you leaves, one stays behind

You understand why and you’ll always be friends

But it’s never the same when the day-to-day ends

Friendship hurts, friendship hurts

Friendship hurts if you do it right

V3

I’ve had coffee twice a week with

Mary Ann for thirty years

We’ve had every conversation

About marriage and careers

She’s the kind of friend who gets me

It took years to build this trust

She’s been gone about a month now

And it’s hard to readjust

Chorus

Friendship hurts if you do it right

One of you leaves, one stays behind

You understand why and you’ll always be friends

But it’s never the same when the day-to-day ends

Friendship hurts, friendship hurts

Friendship hurts if you do it right

Bridge:

Dive in or hold back?

You have to decide

‘Cause friendship hurts if you do it right

Chorus

Friendship hurts if you do it right

One of you leaves, one stays behind

You understand why and you’ll always be friends

But it’s never the same when the day-to-day ends

Friendship hurts, friendship hurts

Friendship hurts if you do it right
