November 1+1 Winners Announced

Recommended Posts

Congratulations to the three winners of the November 1+1 Competition:

I Ain’t No Angel, Ironknee (8 votes)      Before Love Comes, Murphster (8 votes)

                                                         Forever Loved, Triffid (7 votes)

Every song entered this month made some voter’s list of favorites. If you’d like to know where your entry placed among the eight, PM me and I’ll tell you. The next highest-placing song after Triffid’s received 4 votes, the next after that received 3, and the final three entries had 2 votes each.

A big Thank You to this month’s non-contestant judges: Peko, Andy LeF, BarneyBoy, and Greybeard.

Well done, all. I'd like to encourage everyone who posts not he thread now to focus on what you liked best about the entries that got your votes, as well as what you liked best about entries you'd have voted for if you could've. If the discussion takes a different turn instead and people want to give critiques instead, I won't try to drag it back to what I had in mind.

*********************************

Between now and midnight (Pacific Time) December 2, each contestant needs to send me your three favorite picks: the songs that impressed or inspired or moved you the most in this competition. The order of your three picks doesn’t matter. For scoring purposes, they’ll all be weighted the same. On December 3, I’ll post the names of the three songs that received the highest number of votes. As always, noncontestant voters would be more than welcome.

Good luck, everyone!

***********************************************

Welcome to the November Song Contest – a 1+1 Format contest. For long-time Musers, please make note of recent changes noted below in the contest rules.

For any newcomers, 1+1 means the entry is limited to one instrument and one voice. No doubling, harmonies, extra instruments, etc. Think open mic and you'll get the picture. I will be hosting this month so PM me with any questions please.  And please note that Musers are not required to post their entries in the Songs Feedback section of MuseSongwriters for the 1+1 comp.

The timeline is as follows:
• Entries will be accepted now through Midnight Pacific Time Monday, November 27.
• Voting (scorecards) will take place Tuesday, November 28th through Midnight (MST) Sunday, December 3.
• Don’t start voting until I officially post the scoring instructions on March 28.
I'll post the results shortly after the December 3 voting deadline.

If you plan to enter, please review the revised rules, pinned in this forum.
When posting your song, please include:
•song title
•writer credits (If it’s a collab with another Muser please make that clear by including their M/M id)
•audio link

The longstanding rules for the 1+1 all apply, with the following revisions:

3. Once the competition opens for scoring, send the Moderator running the competition your choices for the top entries. The Moderator will announce how many songs you are to pick as your favorites; this number will depend on how many entries there are. The number will approximate one-third the number of total entries. All your picks will receive equal weight in the competition.

4. The Moderator running the competition will post only the top-third high-scoring entries, in order of the number of total votes received. If your entry is not among those listed and you'd like to know how your song ranked, pm the Moderator running the competition and that information will be provided to you.

5. Post-results discussion: This competition is envisioned as basically a feedback-free zone. Post-results discussions can and do take on lives of their own, and that is not likely to change. However, this discussion will be encouraged to focus on what you liked best about the songs that received your votes. You can also write about what you liked best about the songs that came closest to receiving your votes. Entrants who want constructive criticism for their entries are encouraged to post them for critique in the Songs Feedback section of MuseSongwriters.

Please include the lyrics on your post. You may include a small introduction about your song but any other text may be removed by the moderator. Videos are permitted. (Voters will be encouraged to refrain from watching any video until after they've scored the song.)

All Musers are welcome to submit songs as contestants or score the songs as non-contestants. Any questions or problems should be sent to me via private message (PM).

Weeping Angels

Music/Lyrics -Steve Ison

Blessed with the heart of the angel, what a life for you

Picking up people discarded & making them a-new

The insect that flies at the window , you’ve gotta help set free

I guess that’s the way everybody could be…

But you feel like you’ve got no defences from feelings as they flow

Are they yours are they somebody elses? How are you to know ?

Wave upon wave of emotion, that’s how it’s always been

Is it the dream of your life or the life of your dream ?

Weeping angels in your eyes

Weeping angels feel everyone

Weeping angels on a smile that can hide the pain in their song

Weeping angels in your eyes

Weeping angels heal everyone

Weeping angels realise that they’ve got nowhere to belong

The mirror-hung vacant devotion -what a thing to give

But you don’t want to blame anybody -or tell them how to live

Cold or hot all you’ve got are your angels whispering inside

At the heart of all ways is to always be kind..

Weeping angels in your eyes

Weeping angels feel everyone

Weeping angels on a smile that can hide the pain in their song

Weeping angels in your eyes

Weeping angels heal everyone

Weeping angels realise that they’ve got nowhere to belong

Non-Smoker’s Blues

I love the way you walk
It’s oh so smooth
I love the way you talk
It’s just too cool

I love kissing on you baby but
it’s like licking an ashtray

You’ve got great lips now
their oh so fine
they remind me
Of very fine wine

I love kissing you baby but
it’s like licking an ashtray

Bridge:
We’re laying in bed
you’re coughing up a storm
green sea monster’s floatin’ in the bowl
I just don’t know what I’m gonna do
If I have to freekin’ bury you

Your cigarette
It stinks like shit
I wish you’d put it out
And quit, quit, quit.

I love kissing you baby but
it’s like licking an ashtray

I love kissing you baby but
it’s like licking an ashtray

I didn’t marry an ashtray
it’s like licking an ashtray

Hey guys, there's a slight effect on the vocal here in spots but it is just 1 voice + 1 guitar.

"Doesn't Make Sense"

Verse 1:

Jesus hates traffic but he really likes cars.
He’s got a ’58 Chevy that he’s cruisin’ ‘round Mars.
And New York City is a pit bull vortex ..
taken by the Dutch for a case of beer.
For a case … of beer, for a case of beer!
Oh it doesn’t make sense.

Verse 2:

Abraham Lincoln on a big white elephant ..
took a bullet in the head for the USA .
Now I’m high in the sky over the heartland,
thinkin’ ‘bout chasing the American dream.
The American dream, the American dream,
Oh! it doesn’t make sense!

Verse 3:

I’m going fishing off Madagascar.
Gonna catch me a Coelocanth …
swimming in the past and stuck in time …
evolved enough just to die on land.
Just to die on land, just to die on land,
Oh, it doesn’t make sense!

Outro:

Like a 20-dollar bill you can’t break at the bank,
it doesn’t make sense.

Before Love Comes

Before Love Comes

She never had a moment in her life,
her fear would stay away, and let her live.
Coming home from work still feeling tired,
the merging of the days leave lots to give.

And I can feel it in the...
Things that unspoken,
still talk of being broken,
she can’t turn it round alone.
The dream that she's hiding,
on the train she is riding,
just staring at her phone.

She knows she’ll be alone…before love comes.

He wouldn’t know a day spent free from pain,
he walks the streets to breathe the city in.
Watching people, and dreaming of the day,
where he might finally be one of them.

And I can see it in the...
Way that he holds up,
the life that he sold up,
he lost so long ago.
The friends that have all gone,
the streets that have moved on,
a world that doesn’t slow.

He knows he’ll be alone…before love comes.

I see all the lonely people that this city wasn’t built to hold.
Side by side on the train, in the rain, just waiting till they get too old.

Just a little smile to break the ice,
could really spark to life a better world.

But I know it from the...
Way he's avoiding,
the line she is joining,
and she won't turn around.
There’s something that's keeping,
their chances so fleeting,
the ways to see them bound.

They'll both be in the ground...before love comes.

Before love comes.

Forever Loved

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ai66yk6pX97Bl1Hi2vAGoPKZ7u9WOlam/view?usp=sharing

when i hear your voice so sweet
i wonder what your first word will be
the destination in your head
when you take your first little step

math, science, music and art
i wonder what your interests are
on the bus that first school day
will you turn to look my way

A life time of songs left to sing
but one thing to always believe
you're forever loved

what question will you have in mind
the first time you ask me why
your smile without that first lost tooth
your eyes upon the ocean blue

so many roads left to drive
i'll always be there by your side
you're forever loved

so welcome to the world i'm here to lift you up
you're a blessed gift from the heavens above
always remember that you're forever loved

what will be my leading plan
when you reach to hold my hand
what will you be dreaming of

when you look beyond my glove

with countless stars in the night
let me be your guiding light
moments will come and fade
but one constant truth will remain
you're forever loved

Cinnamon Love

Piano/vocals: John Davey

Lyrics: Donna Devine ('DonnaMarilyn')

https://soundcloud.com/donmar-2/cinnamon-love-1/s-ndCnR

V1

Morning light plays hide and seek

On the hardwood kitchen floor

You smile across your coffee

As I watch you from the door

Pre-chorus

Your cinnamon-coloured eyes

Glow like a holy grail

And I recall

Chorus

The scented candle

The moon last night

How each kiss felt

Like a sacred rite

The willing bed

The way I said

Oh fill my life forever

With your sweet cinnamon love

Please fill my life forever

V2

Morning light leaves nothing veiled

While it dances on your hair

It shows I’m not just dreaming

As you watch me from the chair

Pre-chorus

Your cinnamon-coloured eyes

Glow like a holy grail

And I recall

Chorus

The scented candle

The moon last night

How each kiss felt

Like a sacred rite

The willing bed

The way I said

Oh fill my life forever

With your sweet cinnamon love

Please fill my life forever

With your sweet cinnamon love

Solo

Chorus

The scented candle

The moon last night

How each kiss felt

Like a sacred rite

The willing bed

The way I said

Oh fill my life forever

With your sweet cinnamon love

Please fill my life forever

With your sweet cinnamon love

Overload

Hey, hey, I gotta let it go

before these feelings overthrow me into

change, change, it always feels so strange when the

one you love is up and gone a-

way, they will always make it through they

don't fell pain like you know I do

true, you have never seen me cry, even

when you left my side, I just subsided and

kept it to myself 'til my well was dry

baby, maybe it

wasn't meant to last, I never thought to ask, I

never would've guessed that long black dress that was

lying on the floor was all part of your act of

settling the score, my body's still sore and I

don't know what for, I've heard it all before but

your words never hurt so bad but

hey, hey, I gotta let it go, be-

fore these feelings overflow into

nicotine dreams without a reason

sun comes through blinds like it's spitting in my eye

and the light seems brighter on the other side but

suicide's out of the question, I

learned that lesson when I fell in love with you but

hey, hey, I gotta let it go, your

scent still hangs in the cracks in the walls, if I was

feeling in smaller, I'd crawl inside but my

head's too big and nothing seems to fit, ex-

cept for all the shit that doesn't make sense but

hey, hey, I gotta let it go

I can't hold on

I gotta let it go

baby, maybe

we're too young, fucked up, and crazy oh

baby, maybe

we're too young fucked up but I

gotta let it go

I gotta let it go

I can't hold on

I gotta let it go

baby, maybe

we're too young, fucked up, and crazy oh

baby, maybe

we're too young fucked up but I

gotta let it go

I gotta let it go

I can't hold on

"I Ain't No Angel"
Words & Music by Tom Tognaci

https://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=13661477

You can take the best from me
While you’re digging a hole into my heart
You can hurt my pride, shake my will
You can take it all away from me
But, I ain’t no angel
I’m of flesh and blood, you’ll see
I have not walked the road less traveled
And there’s no halo’s light on me

Born to lose the soul in me
To every painted-up face selling romance
So, if you take your shot, shoot to kill
‘Cause you may not get another chance
‘Cause, I ain’t no angel
I’m of flesh and blood, you’ll see
I have not walked the road less traveled
And there’s no halo’s light on me

You can justify any thing you do
You can cover your tracks with your pretty lies
But, there’s just one thing you need to hear
Before you spit in these snake eyes
I ain’t no angel
I’m of flesh and blood, you’ll see
I have not walked the road less traveled
And there’s no halo’s light on me

My votes went to Triffid, Ironknee and DonnaMarilyn.

I was voting this competition on song structure, lyrics, and how each one made me feel at the time. I guess that is the tricky one because different songs work differently depending on my mood too.

Triffid was my favourite, and that was really down to it being about a little kid, something that is easy to relate to for me. It was a great idea and executed well. Well paced, structurally sound and as always a nice voice to carry it off. Really nice.

DonnaMarilyn, I liked the idea, it was different and I really like someone coming up with a different idea and making it work. It might not be a perfect song but it gets points for sticking to its original idea and doing something with it. To me this is the "hard work" part of songwriting, anyone can get bored and take the song somewhere else cos it is easier. The skill is keeping on working with the original idea.

Ironknee, who took a bit of grief for the similarity of this song to another, came up with a nice song. I can't really explain why, it just feels like the best song here, it works. I wish it had a middle 8, it certainly would have been easier to justify its inclusion. I might be swayed by the performance a bit, his voice works really well for this. But like the above song it stayed true to its idea and worked well.

Nice one.

Well done everyone, and thanks for the votes :)

Murphster... yours was my favorite as well, very nice song.  Makes sense, since I think we have a similar taste in music.  Cinnamon Love & I Ain't No Angel were my other two.  Thanks everyone for the entries.  I really enjoy these.

First off......A BIG THANKS TO JOAN FOR RUNNING THIS 1+1.........

We haven't had a 1+1 in a long, long time......I was kind of waiting for this :D I've always thought that the Full production and the 1+1 competitions really complimented us, and really showcased a variety of taste and talent.

Kudos, Joan:wub:

Thanks for all the votes......all the songs displayed songwriting merit. I'm happy that mine fell within the popular tastes of the crowd....thanks, again folksB)

My picks were: Triffed's, "Forever Loved" Mostly because it was an all-around Gem, displaying a good lyric, good melody, with great music and production.

I really liked Murphster's, "Before Love Comes" because of the same reasoning as "Forever Loved" Solid writing and a very good sound.

My third choice is RoadDog's, "Doesn't Make Sense".........    I thought the lyric was very entertaining, and the performance was true to the song.

But, with that said........I could only pick three, and could not rate the others properly. Sorry. It was truly a fine line that differentiated the songs from one another.

Thanks to all the non-contestant voters, and to all who entered.

VIVA LA 1+1   :D

                                   -TOM

All excellent songs - found it very hard to pick just three but "Before Love Comes", "I ain't no Angel" and "Overload" particularly caught my attention this time around. The vocal delivery on "Before..." was fabulous.

Brilliant job by all :)

Andy
