The Great Merle Haggard

Recommended Posts

He played a Fender guitar, traveled with a band
His songs reached deep in the heart
of this common man
He was beloved, a living legend that's why
Before we knew it, he was gone in the blink of an eye

Chorus

Well Momma tried was my favourite song
How she tried to teach him right from wrong
I was so sad when I heard the news anchor say
That the great Merle haggard had passed away
That the great Merle Haggard had passed away

He was diverse man could that guy sing
Even old Marty raised his eyebrows
When he heard Merle doing his thing
Johnny cash that guy who sang about a boy named sue
I bet ol Merle could do it better than Johnny could do

Chorus

Well Momma tried was my favourite song
How she tried to teach him right from wrong
I was so sad when I hear the news anchor say
That the great Merle haggard had passed away
That the great Merle Haggard had passed away

Bridge
That old Fender guitar put a smile on his face
If there was a Mount Rushmore of country he'd have a place
A legend in his own time with millions of fans
He said I'm just a singer I'm a very lucky man

It's almost two years since you said goodbye
I tell you now Merle I'm still wiping tears from my eyes
There are those memories I will never let go
Like Mom and Dad playing Merle on the stereo

Chorus

Well Momma tried was my favourite song
How she tried to teach him right from wrong
I was so sad when I hear the news anchor say
That the great Merle haggard had passed away
That the great Merle Haggard had passed away

This is a great tribute. Still makes me sad. My daughter-in-law was a distant cousin. I wrote a song about him too called Are the Good Times Really Over for Good.  Nice one!
