Find Myself

V1

This is how I find myself

This is where I dwell

In pensive isolation

Sheltered in my shell

Once I had a better life

With you by my side

Now my world is shrinking

My heart hunkered here to hide

PC

This is how I find myself

This is how I find myself

V2

This is how I find myself

This is how I live

nothing ventured nothing lost

nothing left to give

Once I had an open heart

Until I let you in

You tore it up and spit it out

Now much to my chagrin

PC

This is how I find myself

This is how I find myself

Chorus

This is how I find myself

Protect and define myself

This is how I find myself

Since you’ve gone

Since you’ve gone

Since you’ve gone away

Solo

V3

This is how I find myself

This is how I’ve grown

Surrounded by eight million souls

I couldn’t be more alone

Afraid to open up my heart

Since what you’ve done to me

You have left me bereft

alone existentially

PC

This is how I find myself

This is how I find myself

Chorus

This is how I find myself

Protect and define my self

This is how I find myself

Since you’ve gone

Since you’ve gone

Since you’ve gone away

ANXIOUSLY BELIEVING

Verse 1

Staring at a crack in the floor

Hoping that it holds the solution

Or a reason he should lift up his head

Some things seem too broken

Sitting on the edge of their bed

Her sobbing softly haunting his conscience

And familiar feelings stir up inside

Anxiously believing

Verse 2

Stranded in a puddle of tears

Wishing for a hero to save her

When there's no one with a shoulder to lend

What's the point of crying

Something makes her heart skip a beat

Sensing an emotion forgotten

On the breeze drifts the fragrance of hope

Anxiously believing

Bridge

In the darkest time

Of both our lives

There's still a seed

Wait patiently....

Verse 3

Two of us just hanging by a thread

Maybe if we tie them together
Then our love can be forever again

If you and me

Though anxiously

Believe

Everything We Need

Verse 1:

Seeds drop in
Dirt on top
Flowers bloom
And the petals drop
Round and round
Our circle spins
Everything we've planted
Comin' up again

Chorus:
Oh won't you dance
Won't you come with me
Sparkling like the bubbles
In the deep blue sea
Nights are long and
The moon is bright
Everything we need
Is right here... tonight

Verse 2:
When I was
A little boy ..................... a little girl
I prayed to heaven
Help me find my joy........for a perfect world
Now you're back
And I've learned what's true
The way to get to heaven
Is to dance with you

Instrumental

Verse 3:
A big blue moon
In a purple sky
Another day passed
And another long night
Without your lips
Without your eyes
I'm just walking lonely
'Neath these summer skies

Chorus:
Oh won't you dance
Won't you come with me
Sparkling like the bubbles
In the deep blue sea
Nights are long and
The moon is bright
Everything we need
Is right here... tonight

Bullets and Lovers

Verse 1:
It started out small
first a watch, then a hat
snuck out of the store
was as easy as that

Next came a car
then a small liquor store
every new hit
left them thirsting for more

More money
more power
eating life's buffet
much better to burn out
than fade away

Chorus:
Bullets and lovers
danger and lies
we all live in a world
where everyone dies

No chance for salvation
just waiting in vain
the light at the end of the tunnel
is sometimes a train

Verse 2:
Soon they were famous
plastered on the news page
the people they hurt
the heists they had made

No rules to this game
just the thrill of the ride
crossing that line
down into the dark side

Wild and reckless
they just wanted some fun
partners in crime
living life on the run

Chorus:
Bullets and lovers
danger and lies
we all live in a world
where everyone dies

No chance for salvation
just waiting in vain
the light at the end of the tunnel
is sometimes a train

No hope for salvation
just waiting in vain
we cry in the darkness
and live with the pain

Joy Peeks Out
(Verse 1)
Burnt out cars
Blackened streets,
Boarded windows
Kids with no shoes on their feet.
Hope should be dead here
Rotting in the midday sun,
The drug barons hold all the cash
Everyone else has none.

(Chorus)
But joy peeks out from among the cracks
Like weeds creeping from sidewalk slabs
Some may try to arrest it in its tracks
But it ducks and weaves from all thrown jabs.

(Verse 2)
Abuse scars
Dirty deeds,
Broken landscapes
A world in hock to greed.
Love has no right here
Under the shadow of guns,
But it hangs on so tight here
A rose amongst the grunge.

(Chorus)
Yeah, joy peeks out from among the cracks
Like weeds creeping from sidewalk slabs
They may try to arrest it in its tracks
But it ducks and weaves from all thrown jabs.

(Bridge)
Well, Eartha Jane don't weep
Though the system has her beat
She lives for her children
See them playing on the street,
And she puts a little money
In a jar every week
So they can have more
Than just shoes on their feet.

And ol' Marley Leaburn got a cracked-toothed smile
Though he's lived all his life
On the Murder Mile,
Guns be toting, knives be flashing
But he refuses to cry
He's got music in his head
And the sun up in the sky.

(Verse 3)
Burnt out cars
Blackened streets,
Boarded windows
Kids with no shoes on their feet.
Hope should be dead here
Rotting in the midday sun,
The drug barons hold all the cash
The ordinary folk have none.

(Chorus)
But
Joy peeks out
Yeah
Joy creeps out
Yeah, joy peeks out from among the cracks
Like weeds creeping from sidewalk slabs
Don’t try to arrest it in its tracks
Cos it ducks and weaves from all thrown jabs.

(Outro)

Joy blossoms and grows.
It still blossoms and grows...

So Yesterday

Our grandson stayed with us one summer break
From the city, this old farm was quite a change
As the victim of our long and boring days
He had taken 'bout as much as he could take

He bemoaned the lack of our technology
How our internet just wasn't up to speed
Threw his Nintendo down - guess it was dead
Then he scowled at us and this is what he said

You're so yesterday!
You're so lame!
All you do is talk about the "good old days"
You're so yesterday
You're so past
Me, I'm so today and I like livin' fast

I was hurt at first, but then I got to think
He spends all his time his head stuck in a game
He hasn't lived, and loved, and lost - he's just a lad
And bein' yesterday is really not so bad...

I'm so yesterday
It's so great
And I cherish all these memories that I've made
I'm so yesterday
It's so good
I'd go back there in a heartbeat if I could

/br
Well I glanced at you and noticed you look back
I could tell you felt the same the way you laughed
Someone said that youth is wasted on the young
But someday he'll reminisce
With the one he loves
Just like us..

We're so yesterday!
It's so great!
And we cherish all the memories that we've made
We're so yesterday!
It's so good!
We'd go back there in a heartbeat if we could

We're so yesterday
It's so good
We'd go back there in a heartbeat if we could

 Then I Remember

Vs. 1:
It’s a cold and rainy day, as I sit here thinking about you
Those rain drops look like teas running down that window,
And they remind me of how I cried for you
I remember saying our last goodbye, I could barely speak
I was so scared when you left me, I was’t sure how things
      were gonna be

Chorus:
Then I remembered, all the good times that we had
You may be gone forever, but I still have all those memories we had
As I sit here thinking about you, I wonder why I’m so sad
We had a great life together, more than most will ever have

      Bridge: instrumental

Vs. 2:
I remember the first time we met, we said we’d never part
But now I’m all alone without you, with this empty hole in my heart
You were the light of my life, you kept me from falling apart
I don’t know if I can make it without you, It’s like I’m always in the dark

Chorus:
Then I remembered, all the good times that we had
You may be gone forever, but I still have all those memories we had
As I sit here thinking about you, I wonder why I’m so sad
We had a great life together, more than most will ever have
We had a great life together, more than most will ever have

Time Is Piling Up

V1

Time is piling up as the days race by

New ones come in and the old ones die

The tides roll in and the moon decides

I'm sure there's a lesson to be learned

The sun commands and the earth abides

The moon relents and the tide's returned

Time passes by with the ebb and flow

There's so much more we need to know

(Chorus)

Time is piling up

Getting higher by the day

We keep adding to the top

As the bottom slips away

V2

Time is piling up and it's not on our side

There's a valley of knowledge, deep and wide

Try as you may, you can't stop the sand

From falling through, that big glass funnel

Then pouring swiftly through your hands

This big ole ball keeps turning around

The glaciers move at their own pace

There's no way to stop or slow them down

Chorus

V3

Time is piling up no matter what we do

It's gonna be the same for me, as it for you

We fight and we bicker, we seek to communicate

We try hard for love, but its usually too late

Time passes by, right before our very eyes

It lives ever so briefly, then it moans and dies

The sun and the earth, the stars and moon

The ebb and the flow keeps everything in tune

Chorus

V4

Time is piling up as the mirror clearly shows

There's youth and beauty, health and vitality

It’s with us very briefly, and then it goes

That's the cold hard truth, and harsh reality

It gets shorter and shorter with each new day

Who'd have ever guessed. it'd turn out this way

Everything flashes, before everyone’s eyes

Everybody's waiting, for that one big surprise

Chorus

Something I Can Dance To

Some freaky old school rockers

Were dying up on stage

Playing 60’s rock

Sounding mildewed and decayed

A change of set was called for

Something more my style

With an attitude and beat

To make the night worthwhile

So bust the jukebox

Storm the band

Scream from the rooftops

These demands

(Chorus)

Gimme, gimme, gimme

Something I can dance to, yeah

Gimme, gimme, gimme

Something I can dance to, yeah

Gimme EDM

Gimme pop

Anything but that old rock

Gimme, gimme, gimme

Something I can dance to, yeah

Something I can dance to

Let the DJ bring a firestorm

Let the night roar like a tiger

I wanna feel the beat

In every single fiber

It’s twenty-first century

Not nineteen-sixty-five

I can’t dance to those old songs

And I won’t compromise

So bust the jukebox

Storm the band

Scream from the rooftops

These demands

(Chorus)

Gimme, gimme, gimme

Something I can dance to, yeah

Gimme, gimme, gimme

Something I can dance to, yeah

Gimme EDM

Gimme pop

Anything but that old rock

Gimme, gimme, gimme

Something I can dance to, yeah

Something I can dance to

(Bridge)

I don’t mean no heresy

But I don’t want your legacy

(Chorus)

Gimme, gimme, gimme

Something I can dance to, yeah

Gimme, gimme, gimme

Something I can dance to, yeah

Gimme EDM

Gimme pop

Anything but that old rock

Gimme, gimme, gimme

Something I can dance to, yeah

Something I can dance to

Lost It All in Winnemucca

Verse

I met her in the Silver State Casino
She said I looked like Rudolph Valentino
I didn’t know exactly who she meant
But I took it… as a compliment

She said she likes a man who takes his chances
A man who’s finally learned what true romance is
I hadn’t really been around the block
But knew enough to… walk the walk

Chorus
I lost it all in Winnemucca
Lost it all in Winnemucca
I thought I was Romeo and she was Juliet
But it was yet one more bad, bad bet
And now… I’m just another sucker
I lost it all in… Winnemucca

Verse

I didn’t tell her I was still a virgin
She loved me with the cunning of a surgeon
I treated her to dinners and to drinks
She kept smiling… like a sphinx

Within a few days I was crazy for her
A blackjack streak obscured the coming horror
I walked out with a giant sack of bills
I called her good luck… in high heels

Chorus
I lost it all in Winnemucca
Lost it all in Winnemucca
I thought I was Romeo and she was Juliet
But it was yet one more bad, bad bet
And now… I’m just another sucker
I lost it all in… Winnemucca

Verse
A winner’s bender turned the simple abstract
The blackjack dealer bopped me with a blackjack
They grabbed the money and crushed all my toes
And then hightailed it… to Mexico

I woke the next day with a splitting headache
But worse than that was overwhelming heartbreak
Detectives said the pair had pulled a scam
Her love for me was… just a sham

Chorus
I lost it all in Winnemucca
Lost it all in Winnemucca
I thought I was Romeo and she was Juliet
But it was yet one more bad, bad bet
And now… I’m just another sucker
I lost it all in… Winnemucca
(Repeat)

(Outro)
There’s only one thing I’m glad I lost… in Winnemucca

The Radiance of Love

"Do something for me would you?

Always do what's true for you."

To love I say I'm listening

To love I say it makes sense

To love I say I'll do it

I'll do anything for you

Building you a monument

Clouds will crowd around your feet

When they've climbed the stairs of stars

In awe of where you are

Building you a monument

My everlasting testament

That I was here and I experienced

The radiance of love

It drops a sparkle in your eye

And lends you wings so you can fly

Where the other have before

Into the radiance of love

Hunters Horn

V1
The mist hung low on the ridge of Wolfe hill
The hunting pack caught the scent of the kill
And you could feel the chill of death being born
When you heard the sound of the hunters horn

Ch
Run run, run for your life
Run from the hunter with his skinning knife
Run or you'll curse the moment you where born
When you hear the sound of the hunters horn

V2
Hush now children don't you cry
Stay where it's safe let the hunt ride by
Then I'll run for my life and the hounds will be drawn
Then you'll hear the sound of the hunters horn

Ch
Run run, run for your life
Run from the hunter with his skinning knife
Run or you'll curse the moment you where born
When you hear the sound of the hunters horn

V3
Down from the hill top, down where its high
Down to the line where the train speeds by
Down to the track where their bodies were torn
Died the pack and knife and the hunters horn

Ch
Run run, run for your life
Run from the hunter with his skinning knife
Run or you'll curse the moment you where born
When you hear the sound of the hunters horns

V4
Now when the mist hangs low on the ridge of wolf hill
It is said of the pack they are hunting still
And if you feel the chill of death being born
Then you'll hear the sound of the hunters horn

Ch
Run run, run for your life
Run from the hunter with his skinning knife
Run or you'll curse the moment you where born
When you hear the sound of the hunters horn

The Angel From Saint Joe

My mind was getting hazy and my body was on fire

I heard an urgent voice say it’s a dangerous time

They carried me to shelter deep inside the timberlands

Where the Angel from Saint Joe took my life into her hands

She brought me healing waters and I felt her river flow

My brow began to cool and then she poured it on my soul

What a change from yesterday, I thought I’d been condemned

She made me feel like spring awoke and blossomed deep within

Her music was my nourishment she softly sang the words

Of every single nursery rhyme that I had ever heard

My memories of childhood washed me clean with their caress

I knew right then the Angel from Saint Joe would bring me rest

One morning I felt strong enough and ready to depart
So just before I left I gave my thanks up to my Lord

And even as I waved goodbye I knew I’d never go

A part of me would always be with the Angel from Saint Joe

More than that

I don't sleep when I'm thinking of you
Spend my nights in a hullabaloo
I long for peace and quiet in the night
Where I can dream of seeing me reflected in your eyes

It's a long way from home where you are
I would drive but they took all my cars
I like to think you miss those crazy days
And maybe you regret the words I know they made you say

It's not that I think seeing you will bring me much success
And It's not the fleeting fantasy of watching you undress
It's not even all the nights we’ll have imagined in my head
It's more than that
It's more than that
Much more than that.

I've been digging this hole for three years
It's now up to the top of my ears
I hide the dirt in pockets of my slacks
Disperse it in the yard where sun can hit my back

I'll be gone 'fore the next Christmas comes
When my presents arrive all at once
Will hitch a ride to Cali-forn-i-a
And i’ll be there with you in time for new years day

It's not that I think seeing you will bring me much success
And It's not the fleeting fantasy of watching you undress
It's not even all the nights we’ll have imagined in my head
It's more than that
It's more than that
Much more than that.

I watch you on the silver screen, in the rec. room everyday at three
And in those magazines, where all your friends say that you found your peace
I watch you on those TV shows, you talk about the men you know
But never hear you mention me, the only man who cared enough to set you free

I'll be gone 'fore the next Christmas comes
When my presents arrive all at once
Will hitch a ride to Cali-forn-i-a
And i’ll be there with you in time for new years day

It's not that I think meeting you will bring me much success
And It's not the fleeting fantasy of taking off your dress
It's not even all the nights we’ll have imagined in my head
It's more than that
It's more than that
Much more than that.

Much more than that.

Life’s Short Ride

We all headed to the gravel pit

First warm day in spring

Came alive when our bodies hit

The water’s refreshing green

Bobby was the first to dive

Off the thirty foot cliff

Sally was too scared to try

Afraid she might miss

So we took the long way in

Walked at least an extra mile

Sweat dripping off our chins

Bobby looked at us and smiled

That was then and this is now

Sally died in Afghanistan

Bobby died in a desert town

Saving another man

Resurrected, we’ll swim again

In the river that flows on High

Fears gone, as eternity begins,

We’ll remember life’s short ride

Congrats Eric and Lyrical..and all those who particpated. Definitely a lot of good work up there. And thank you to Iggy for running the show once again.

And thank you all for voting. Mine benefitted from recent personal experience I think. In early September I managed to have a skin infection get into my bloodstream which caused me to be in hospital for a week and tied to a portable IV bag for another---administering a constant stream of antibiotics. My hospital stay, and the awesome care I received from the medical staff, and especially the nurses---and my first nurse in particular... is what gave me the mental state to start it on my phone and complete it upon release. It came quickly and was typed with one finger, lol, as one arm was out of commission :)

So thank you all, and a special shout out to the medical staff at St Joseph's Hospital..

Well done to Eric, John and LyriCal and to everyone who entered. I thought the quality was very high this month and great to see so many entries.

Some of the ones that stood out for me were Anxiously Believing, Find Myself, Bullets and Lovers, Lost it all in Winnemucca, Hunters Horn and The Angel from Saint Joe.

I'm sorry that Everything We Need was DQ'd. It was my first choice!

Congrats to Eric, John and Doug. I gave you all high marks.

I love seeing the actual scores, and marveling at the range of numbers for a single song.  A song someone gives a 2 VERY GOOD to is one that gets a 4 BELOW AVG from someone else! Happens a lot!

Congratulations to Eric and John. Like John's, my lyric was based on personal experience. Okay, just kidding. If I've been to Winnemucca, I don't remember. I just liked the name.

I thought there were a lot of really solid entries this month, obviously including Eric's and John's. I, too, marvel at how one or two voters can give almost everyone 3's, 3.5's and 4's when most of us spread our numbers around more. Ah, well.

Thanks again to Iggy for his generosity in putting the contest together!

Congrats to all the writers! Thanks Iggy for your time and effort. My two favs were So Yesterday and Lost it all in Winnemucca. (thank you for not using muthafucca when rhyming this). I  didn't have a horse in the race.

My votes are clustered around average because that's how I evaluated them. My view is simple. The rating doesn't move unless I see something in the criteria that compels me to change the rating. I picked two of the three winners with scores of 2.5 each.

The wide disparity in ratings, tells me lyric writing is subjective.  No surprise there.

I’ve only been writing songs for a year and this is the first contest I ever entered. I thought there were a lot of good “story” type of lyrics from the writers but I had a difficult time trying to imagine many of them being performed or put to music. My favorites were “So Yesterday”, “Bullets and Lovers” and “Angel From St. Joe”. Overall, it was very interesting to read the lyrics and see the differences and similarities in them.

(Are we suppose to critique the lyrics entered into the contest?)

FLF - No, the entries are not critiqued here.  If you'd like to have your lyric critiqued, please post it the feedback area.

Congrats to Eric John and LyriCal and all, and welcome to the new participants!  It's great to see some new people raising the ante.  Frankee, your observations regarding a lyric's adaptability to music, or lack thereof, regardless of how well it otherwise is written, shows your lyrical instincts are good. That's what it's really all about.  For me that is one of the most important criteria when critiqueing a lyric.  But there have been some, (ok, there have been many) that I could not ever imagine were singable that ended up in the song review section  sounding pretty good.
