My Love's A Fire

Verse 1:
Scent of your soul
on my pillow rests
in time's horizon
we, are all guests

Pre-Chorus:
With every hour
with every minute
there is no life
without you in it

Chorus:
Your lips, your taste
only take me higher
as the night grows cold
my love's a fire

Verse 2:
The rising waves
brush of a finger
moments enchanted
to, forever linger

Pre-Chorus:
In every beat
in every breath
you are my blood
you are my death

Chorus:
Your kiss, your touch
only take me higher
when the night grows cold
my love's a fire

Portraits of war

(Verse 1)
I sketch a calloused face
Eyes still glint despite the pain,
Mud runs like mascara
Tear drop tracks made by the rain.
The bombs explode like fireworks
As we shoot the jolly breeze,
And young Johnston's in the corner
Looking like he's just asleep.

(Chorus)
Portraits of war
Portraits of war
Life's a bloody canvass
Tell me what we're dying for?

(Bridge)
As the fires burn
And the dying cry,
I sketch out well worn faces
Under a darkened sky.
As my pages run out
And my pencil stub blunts,
I look back at all the names
It feels like years, been just months.

(Chorus)
Portraits of war
Portraits of war
Life's a bloody canvass
Tell me what we're dying for?

(Verse 2)
I don't see any hate
Hearts still beat despite the pain,
We trust to each other
I'd carry you, you'd do the same.
The guns chatter like old friends
As we wear holes in our knees,
I hear Eddie’s lost an arm
The fare to get home isn't cheap.

(Chorus)
Portraits of war
Portraits of war
Life's a bloody canvass
Tell me what we're dying for?

(Verse 3)

I put down my notepad
Lest I bleed upon the page,
Sarge asks me if I'm all right
But he's just an actor on a stage,
Portraits of war
Portraits of war
I stare down at my dark countenance
Like I've never seen myself before.

Talk Is Cheap

You and me against the world, least that’s the way it seems

All those snake oil salesmen on their corners hawking dreams

Such confusing clamor carries rude awakenings

Promises are nothing more than whispers on the wind

Heard a sound bite saying that the sun will shine again

Still it hides from those who’ve weathered days of pounding rain

Beggars riding wishes while the horses are for kings

Promises are nothing more than whispers on the wind

Playing liars poker, the big boys settled in

Said they’d share their winnings if we loosened up their chains

How we cheered and upped the ante when they asked us to all chip in

Later on they simply left without leaving anything

I still have my music and I’m glad I love to play

Hope you spread my message far and wide to every place

Talk is cheap and full of air and then it disappears

Promises are nothing more than vapours in the air

Promises are nothing more than whispers on the wind

Promises are nothing more than whispers on the wind

The Tighter You Hold Me

I woke up to gray clouds
Their prison used to swallow me
The years I spent confined in them are lost

I woke up to gray clouds
Their shadows used to follow me
Lord, you know, I paid a heavy cost

(Chorus)
The tighter you hold me
The freer I feel
(4X)

I look into your eyes
And know for sure we’ll find a way
All the roads end at the endless sea

I look into your eyes
And know today will be the day
The clouds once and for all will blow past me

(Chorus)
The tighter you hold me
The freer I feel
(4X)

I count the distant stars
And wonder how we see their light
I swear I’ll make the most of my time

I count the distant stars
And stand amazed they shine so bright
The universe looks new because you’re mine

(Chorus)
The tighter you hold me
The freer I feel
(4X)

I look into your eyes
And know for sure we’ll find a way
All the roads end at the endless sea

I look into your eyes
And know today will be the day
The clouds once and for all will blow past me

(Chorus)
The tighter you hold me
The freer I feel
(Repeat to fade out)

Too Much Sugar

When I was five, went grocery shopping - just my Daddy and me.
A box of cereal caught my eye, 'cause I'd seen it on TV
It wasn't long 'til he spotted it in our cart
And my Dad said "Son, ya gotta be thinkin' smart"

That's too much sugar!
Way too sweet!
Said it's too much sugar
And it's way too sweet for me

My college days were a crazy haze of hookin' up with pretty girls
But the conversation on those dates took me right back to that store

She's too much sugar
Way too sweet!
Too much sugar
She's way too sweet for me

Instrumental solo

{br}
Now this lovely lady's come and won my heart
And don't take this the wrong way
But I think
..she's a little
... tart!

{spoken} I knew you'd take it the wrong way!

Not Too much sugar (too much sugar)
Not way too sweet (way too sweet)
Not too much sugar
She's just sweet enough for me

Too much sugar? No! (too much sugar)
No way too sweet! (No way too sweet!)
Not too much sugar
No, she's just sweet enough for me

I Still Think of Her

I was drifting in fog between sleep and awake

When my mind caught a glimpse of my old girlfriend Kate

I’m crazy in love with the girl by my side

But when memories hit me, I go for a ride

It was Kate and her freckles that summer in Maine

I explored every one and the mem’ries remain

I got a ring on my finger and I’m playin’ it straight

But sometimes out of nowhere, I still think of Kate

Chorus:

I was lucky in love and I found a great wife

I’ll be faithful to her for the rest of my life

But at points in my past there was one special girl

And sometimes out of nowhere I still think of her

Yeah, at points in my past there was one special girl

And sometimes out of nowhere I still think of her

In Chicago’s cold winter, Claire’s kisses were hot

She knew what to do and she gave what she got

I was looking for fun and she had it to spare

(And) sometimes out of nowhere, I still think of Claire

Bridge:

On nights I’m awake and it’s quarter to three

I lay there reflecting on my legacy

I find myself wondering, a bit hopefully

If someone, somewhere, still thinks of me?

If someone, somewhere, still thinks of me?

Chorus:

I was lucky in love and I found a great wife

I’ll be faithful to her for the rest of my life

But at points in my past there was one special girl

And sometimes out of nowhere I still think of her

Sometimes out of nowhere I still think of her

Ted Talk

intro/

I was at a party having fun  - BBQ in the cool evening sun

Saw a cute girl by the wooden gate. I “thought make a move, before its too late”...

1/

She said hello there my name  is Marie

I believe in spirituality

To learn of the world to take photographs

Philosophize, meditate in the bath

Read Sartre and Kant, dine on grass fed meat

Discover myself and walk barefeet

She said I study science and biology

The actions of chimps and humanity

All part of a whole - a holistic one

An applause for a world of pluralist fun

Ch/

I said “that’s nice but I think I better walk

I wanted a chat and a giggle , not a Ted talk”

2/

She said but love is all, it's a currency

It runs through the stars, The earth and through me

A cure for cancer, or at least for the heart

The joy in reunion , the peace in depart

She said don't you see, your blood needs to course

With raw emotion from some primal source

Natural numbers where data predicts

The balance of life and what make us tick

Social media, soul and being

Opening the third eye and really seeing

Ch/

I said “that’s nice but I think I better walk

I wanted a chat and a giggle , not a Ted talk”

Br/

She looked sad but said “ok”.

Said “take my number anyway”

Ch/

I said “that’s nice but I think I better walk

I wanted a chat and a giggle , not a Ted talk”

Play Outside

V1

When the kids get together

They just want to play forever

They just want to

Play outside

Play outside

All day

V2

When the kids get together

They don't care about the weather
The kids just want to
Play outside
Play outside

All day

Chorus

Swim in the river slow and wide
Hang on to your kite as it glides
Speed down that water slide
The kids are happy to
Play outside
Play outside
All day

V3
Mom and Dad like to nap inside
They aren't the first parents to hide
The kids just want to
Play outside
Play outside
All day

Bridge

Inside is the same everyday

And boring in every way

Who wants to play Monopoly

When you could be free

Chorus

Swim in the river slow and wide
Hang on to your kite as it glides
Speed down that water slide
The kids are happy to
Play outside
Play outside
All day

Dig?

SUMMER SWALLOWS

If one swallow does not a Summer make

Then how does nature know just what it takes

Is it the magic of the coloured butterflies

As they sail beneath the blue and sunny skies

Or the roses in full bloom as their scent excites the air

These things tell me at last the Summer’s here

(Ch)

I can feel something happening

Like my heart is unraveling

I want fly like a bird alive and free

Summer is the only time for me

The girls in Summer dresses with ribbons in their hair

People sat outside the inn supping local beer

A friendly game of cricket on the village green

Summertime in England scones and cream

(Ch)

I can feel something happening

Like my heart is unraveling

I want fly like a bird alive and free

Summer is the only time for me

(Br)

I've had it up to here with feeling sad

When Summer comes then I feel really glad

No longer does my rheumatism ache

I don't care how many swallows Summer takes.

(Ch)

I can feel something happening

Like my heart is unraveling

I want fly like a bird alive and free

Summer is the only time for me

(Ch)

I can feel something happening

Like my heart is unraveling

I want fly like a bird alive and free

Summer is the only time for me

Death Metal Kills

No rest for the renegade

Warring for his soul

Cut by jagged lyrics

He’s bleeding out of control

Death Metal kills

Death Metal kills

It’s sharp as honed steel

Death Metal kills

Stay clear of keen edges

Avoid the razor sharp steel

Its beat will hypnotize

Death Metal kills

Death Metal kills

Death Metal kills

It’s sharp as honed steel

Death Metal kills

Its rhythm is banging

Charged with overflow

No rule for the unruly

Anarchy grows

Death Metal kills

Death Metal kills

It’s sharp as honed steel

Death Metal kills

Only Ravens Know

Professor speaks of lore and legends

Where often ravens played a part

As he’s speaking of the Myans

His frail hand grasps at even frailer heart

A trucker’s been awake since Tuesday

A road sign warns the grade is steep

Another sign warns of a hairpin

But he’s doesn’t seem to read them in his sleep

A Golfer scoffs at rain and thunder

Puddles soak his spikes and heels

Near the apex of his backswing

His hair begins to feel like squirming eels

A toddler sits upon the curbside

Kitten meows across the street

Before there’s anyone to see her

She’s up and moving quickly on her feet.

Her bigger brother was to watch her

Cuz his mother told him so

But 5 year old boy minds can wander

Off to places even ravens seldom go

A bone cold wind blows down the highway

Tumbling leaves and souls in tow

They float up high above the tree tops

Heading for a place that only ravens know.

The Toddler wakes up from her coma

As if the past months were a snooze

Stations rush to send reporters

To film a feel good fluff piece for the news

Cameras jam the room and hallways

Film crews lined up in a row

Their faces soon gape wide in wonder

As she begins to teach the things that ravens know.

The time has come to learn what ravens know

Love Moans

I get the shivers

Down deep in my spine

My body’s twitching

Been waiting a long time

Ch:

I can see it in your eyes

I can feel it in my bones

Just you and me tonight

Making love

Love love love

Love moans

V2:

My feet are dancing

Don’t need no music

I found that feeling

Never want to lose it

Ch:

I can see it in your eyes

I can feel it in my bones

Just you and me tonight

Making love

Love love love

Love moans

Br:

Been  sitting in a bubble

Just waiting to burst

You hold the pin

Come on baby let me in

Ch:

I can see it in your eyes

I can feel it in my bones

Just you and me tonight

Moving love

Love love love

Love moans.

thanks so much Iggy for running the competition!

There is always this buildup of excitement in the last couple of days before the scores come out.

I was surprised to be almost at the bottom of the pack (perhaps complacency after doing so well last month!) - I was highly amused when I first wrote it, so there is always that :-)

Callout to my favorites this month

Lonely Farmer Dot Com - good idea, well done!
Beck And Call - Really enjoyed the word-sounds of the chorus!
Only Ravens Know - Awesome writing, and came so close to being my overall winner!

Congratulations to SongWolfe, Kuya, and John! I had Portraits of War and Only Ravens Know as my favorites followed by Talk Is Cheap and I Still Think of Her. Nice work, all!

A big shout out to Iggy for running the show!

Thanks Iggy for another hosting job and to all participants for a great set of lyrics with some really neat ideas.

Lonely Farmer dot com and the TED Talk stand out for me as two "left field" ideas that keep things interesting around here.

Well done SongWolf - "Portraits of War" was the outstanding lyric for me this month - great perspective, images and theme.

I also really enjoyed: "Lonely farmer", "Talk is Cheap", "I Still Think of Her" and "Only Ravens Know".

Thanks to Iggy for organising and LB76/BlueLewie for taking the time to read and score - kudos guys!

Wow - very nice surprise that my lyric did so well. :) I never quite know what people are looking for when they score in these contests but glad that Portraits of War went down so well.

Congrats to Kuya and John as well and thanks to Iggy for running it and to Liam and BlueLewie for your additional participation!

For my part, the two lyrics that most stood out were 'Talk is cheap' and 'Summer swallows'.

Congrats to Songwolfe and John for 2 fine lyrics, and really to all who participated this month, and thanks to Iggy. My faves in no particular order this month are Love Moans, the Tighter You Hold Me and I Still Think Of Her. I also thought Death Metal Kills was pretty decent for the genre. Some genres don't play well in these contests and it's not necessarily anything about the lyric, imho. And thank you for the votes and kudos regarding Lonely Farmer Dot Com.  I tweaked that one on and off since about February or March. I wish more of the new forum members would participate with entries or even if only to vote.
