These Are The Days

Lyrics and Melody: Eric Borgos

Music and Vocals: Elliott Sheridan

Verse 1

Boom! here I come supersonic
with rhymes vivid, yet drippingly ironic
smooth like a well-made gin and tonic
over beats, mellifluously iconic

Giant paintings of me
hang in the rock hall of fame
the slackers sit on the bench
while I am running this game

Slayed, dropped, and beaten
I stomp on their grave
music's my master
and I just a slave

Pre-Chorus

Beam me to the dance floor
set the phaser to stun
put your party hands up
and get down with the fun

Chorus

These are the times we won't forget
Living our lives without a net
These are the times
This is our way
These are the days

Verse 2

People label me an outcast
a misfit
think I'm here to cause trouble
but I don't give a ...

Hit records
like pancakes stackin'
from my lyrical wisdom
your lips will be smackin'

Pump up the volume
take life to the max
punch yourself a ticket
to ride on my tracks

The preacher man, he says
"Son, you reap what you sow"
that's why I'm sleeping in mansions
and counting my dough

Pre-Chorus

Beam me to the dance floor
set the phaser to stun
put your party hands up
and get down with the fun

Chorus

These are the times we won't forget
Living our lives without a net
These are the times
This is our way
These are the days

These are the times
This is our way
These are the days

Hey folks, here's a tune I wrote for my wife while yet again on travel for work.. It's my attempt at a jazz standard.

Comments welcome by default!

Stuck With You

Verse 1:
I'd like to see you on Saturday.
But I'm on the wrong side of the world.
Across the deep blue sea, you still inspire me!

Chorus:
I could get stuck on a train
or on the tarmac in a ... big jet airplane.
I could get stuck talkin' to who know's who.
But I'd rather be stuck with you!

Verse 2:
I'm livin' up in the blue sky ...
inside a tube .. and I wonder why ...
the world is so small yet you're so far away.

The City Falls Into Your Eyes

Music & lyrics Steve Ison/Darshan Davies

Steve Ison -Lead Vox,Guitars

Pete Churchill Bass,keys,BVs

Paul Carroll -Drums BVs

Dog barking,breathless in the heat
Neighbours gossiping out on the street
Warm concrete under shattered glass
Tread carefully in the underpass

The City Falls Into Your Eyes
Cold rain, Warm endless skies...

Time crawling Monday afternoon
Parking meter with a red balloon
Newspaper -Ice cream in the park
Better stay clear when its after dark

The City Falls Into Your Eyes
Cold Rain Warm endless skies..

AND THE CAROUSEL GOES ON
JUST A MOMENT THEN YOU'RE GONE
THOUGH YOU THINK YOUR LIFE WON'T CHANGE
THE FAMILIAR SOON SEEMS STRANGE
AND THE CITY FALLS INTO YOUR EYES
AND YOU TRY TO MAKE IT HOME THROUGH SUNSET SKIES...

Cities falling down
We're all living with the things we've found
Cities moving round
Everybodies in a strange town..

The City Falls Into Your Eyes
Cold Rain Warm endless skies..

AND THE CAROUSEL GOES ON
JUST A MOMENT THEN YOU'RE GONE
THOUGH YOU THINK YOUR LIFE WON'T CHANGE
THE FAMILIAR SOON SEEMS STRANGE
AND THE CITY FALLS INTO YOUR EYES
AND YOU TRY TO MAKE IT HOME THROUGH SUNSET SKIES...

Please Don't Let the Music Die

Song/Lyrics/Vocals: Brette Elizabeth

Music/BGV: Z. Smith

I heard them singing a forbidden song,
A voice so beautiful, it stirred my heart,
A melancholy tune as they sang so high;
Please don’t let the music die

The melody was soft and so forlorn,
The message moved the listeners in the room,
The music made us young, as time flew by;
Please don’t let the music die

Chorus
Then in stormed the Noise Police and they took them down,
They seized all instruments as they blocked the sound,
They arrested the musicians as they begged and cried;
We won't let the music die

Their defiant standpoint broke the law
The lyrics lifted up our spirits tall
An enlightenment for generations by;
Please don’t let the music die

Chorus
When they made the Noise Police they broke our souls,
They persecuted music to have all control,
But our freedom of expression left the law defied,
We won't let the music die

(Woh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh…)

And they sang:
Tune the guitar and let the strings be strummed
Raise up your voice and sing a lullaby
Dance to the beat of your own sweet drum
We won’t let the music die

I heard them singing a forbidden song,
A voice so beautiful, it stirred my heart,
A melancholy tune as they sang so high;
Please don’t let the music die

We won’t let the music die

Touch Me

©2017 Music & Lyric Emily Bond

V
In my dream the city crumbles
I can hear people scream
I watch it through a mask of horror
I’ve no idea what it means

V
In my waking haze I wonder
Who’d be there to crawl inside
Through the rubble if I lay dying
Alone and lost and terrified

PC
Now I can’t sleep, my eyes won’t close

Ohhh...

CH
Touch me, grab me, hold me
Touch me, please

Chase the fear away
I need you next to me
Touch me now, make me forget

This dream that lives inside my head

Touch me, grab me, hold me
Touch me, please

V
All my life I’ve had this dream
It cracks inside like thunder
Something dark that I can’t name
A fear I can’t discover

V
I sense you near but I can’t see you
Are you there beside me now
I wake up and the room is spinning
Each second passes like an hour

PC
Now I can’t sleep, my eyes won’t close

Ohhh...

CH

Touch me, grab me, hold me
Touch me, please

Chase the fear away
I need you next to me
Touch me now, make me forget

This dream that lives inside my head

Touch me, grab me, hold me
Touch me, please

BR
The shadows resemble faces but I don’t know them
I feel them reaching out like a cold wind

Ohhh...

CH
Touch me, grab me, hold me
Touch me, please

Chase the fear away
I need you next to me
Touch me now, make me forget

This dream that lives inside my head

Touch me, grab me, hold me
Touch me, please
Touch me, grab me, hold me
Touch me, please

Lies!

Music/Lyrics/Arrangement/Playing/Vocals/Production by Johan Alm aka Jambrains

VERSE 1
From the start
They took advantage of my heart
Left me reeling and confused
All of my illusions
torn apart
I grew older
Older than my years
They schooled me first in hatred
Then betrayal and
finally deceit

CHORUS
Lies!
They start out small
Lies!
They soon grow tall
Lies! Lies! Lies!
They build up a wall
Lies!
Time for it to fall

VERSE 2
Early on
I learned that there was no-one
No-one I could trust
To hold me tight
when all my hope was gone
Been let down
Left alone to drown
Sunshine's just a rumour
I see darkness all around.

CHORUS

BREAK
When I'm fast asleep
Vivid visions hidden deep
Slowly start to surface
Of a man that I
can never be

When I wake
I will the dream to stay
But reality comes crashing
into focus
and pushes it away

SOLO

CHORUS

Wall

V1

It all starts with a solid base

Every piece set firmly in place

Build it up higher so we can hide

Don’t want to think about the other side

V2

Concrete and stone, brick and steel

Make it solid, how’s that make you feel?

Polish it like a mirror, make it shine

Stare at your reflection, everything looks fine

Ch

It’s your wall

But you're not secure

Isolation

you can't endure

It’s a barrier

Between you and me

It’s your wall

But do you feel free?

V3

Outside your wall, life goes on

While you live in your private Babylon

Feel so safe from the worldwide fight

Isn’t it a lonely desperate life?

Ch

It’s your wall

But you're not secure

Isolation

you can't endure

It’s a barrier

Between you and me

It’s your wall

But do you feel free?

Br

No way to climb over

The wall you built so high

Imprisoned in your own mind

Alone until you die

Ch

It’s your wall

But you're not secure

Isolation

you can't endure

It’s a barrier

Between you and me

It’s your wall

But do you feel free?

Outro

No way to climb over

The wall you built so high

Imprisoned in your own mind

Alone until you die

Entering my song If I Told You into the April contest. Thanks!

Micky

Song Title: If I Told You

Music and Lyrics by Micky Shiloah

We only talk when the lights go down

We only see eye to eye

When we're both looking at the ground

And if I told you it was killing me to breathe

Killing me to breathe

Killing me to breathe next to you

What would you do?

Would you tell me that you want me

The way that I want you?

Is there a possibility of our worlds turning one from two?

Chorus:

And if I told you I like you

Would you tell me you like me, too?

Would you take a chance with me?

A simple dinner and a movie

And if we ended on high notes

Could we do like the Eskimos?

Would you let me hold you tight?

And give you a kiss good night?

'Cause I could see us walking down by the water

Or driving out to anywhere

Happier than anybody else

I swear I'll take good care of you

And if I told you it was killing me to breathe

Killing me to breathe

Killing me to breathe without you

What would you do?

Would you tell me that you want me

The way that I want you?

Is there a possibility that I won't make myself a fool?

Chorus:

And if I told you I like you

Would you tell me you like me, too?

Would you take a chance with me?

A simple dinner and a movie

And if we ended on high notes

Could we do like the Eskimos?

Would you let me hold you tight?

And give you a kiss good night?

And if I told you I love you

Would you tell me you love me, too?

Would you spend your life with me?

Run away and marry me?

And we'll always have high notes

We'll do just like the Eskimos

And I'll always hold you tight

And give you a kiss good night

O2 (Oxygen)

I felt lost at the beginning Just bright lights and a human feeling

So many vivid colors seeing was believing

Rapid improvising, Each breath slowly rising,

A mothers a lullaby, sweet and surprising

taking in as much as I could

in world where all is new

Living The highest high

02 - 02- 02

Through five senses of sensation, I lived childhoods revelation

blowing out the candles on each birthday celebration

Now An adult, unrestricted, Im willfully addicted

And feeling the earth and my soul are connected

Breath deep into my veins

in world where all is new

Living The highest high

02 - 02- 02

Giver of life

For my children, for my wife

Out here camping in the mountains

Nearby Streams trickle like fountains

Cool fresh air, the stars are blazing

Breathe deeply and smoothly, 02 is amazing!

On top of the world

Looking down , taking in the view

Living The highest high

02 - 02- 02

Bourbon Street

Music, lyrics and everything else: S Landin Jr

Bourbon Street

So long to you my friend it’s time that we split ways
I’ll forever remember you, oh the bad and the good ol’ days
I’m bound and all I know
It hurts me to let go
But who knows I may plant my feet
Down on Bourbon Street

Too fast, you and I, we were young and wild at heart
Made the world slow down it’s pace and follow us right from the start
Like a restless blowing wind beat down upon your skin
We were friends, we were enemies
Down on Bourbon Street

So long to you my love, don’t you cry ’cause we’ve reached the end
As you well know I bleed the same, but still consider us the best of friends
Now I’m bound and all I know
It hurts me to let go
But for you my love, I’ll skip a beat
Down on Bourbon Street

Yeah for you my love, I’ll skip a beat
Down on Bourbon Street

Well done to the winners - A good crop of songs, and of course as tradition dictates, here are my comments on the songs (written as I was listening to the song, not in hindsight!)

These Are The Days - Eric Borgos
Nicely produced, but I felt like the lyrics were a sassy kind of modern pop - maybe even rap or RnB, but the music was not a great match for the bombastic "hey look at me" lyrics

Stuck With You - Road Dog
- Authentic music, enjoyed the almost live vibe of the whole thing, Good singing, not relevant to the song but the timing (vs. the drum) needs some work. On the whole I enjoyed it, without finding any real standout elements of it

The City Falls Into Your Eyes - ScenesFromPalacio
-Lots of musical ideas as always. Kind of wish I could enjoy the lyrics a bit more as they sounded very whymsical - I am assuming you are very much a music-first writer, with the lyrics coming after the melody is already defined - that would be my guess. Good job though as always and hard not to give it a good score!

Please Don't Let the Music Die - Brelizabeth
Pretty song, with a nice delivery. I felt like this was a modern, careworn response to "American Pie" by Don McLean. Perhaps this is a work taken from a fictional musical like 2112 by Rush. Anyway there was a lot to like about the song, with the one criticism that I didnt ever feel surprised - it was nice, but didnt quite cross the chasm into being memorable (for my ears of course)

Touc0h Me - EmilyEmily
- Really beautiful, crystalline type singing - that is what pulled me into the song. I like the melody of the song, there is a good balance between the chorus and verses. All in all I like this a lot. The only downside of an otherwise enjoyable song is that I thought the lyrics were not as strong as the music. I can imagine enjoying the song just because of the melody and vocals, but a stronger lyric would push it over the top

Lies! - Jambrains
- Very good production, classic rocker. some neat things done with the rythm in the chorus - I didnt listen quite enough to get it, but it sounds like you have an extra 1/2 step in there or something. Something I can imagine might grown on me with more listens. The area for a bit of work for me is the lyrical development - I felt like there could have been a bit more to grab onto. I really liked the bit towards the end where the singer has something he sees in his sleep. Wonder if that could be brought forward into verse 2, so that the bridge could provide a resolution? Anyway that was my thought

Wall - Mike B
I think I have heard this in the regular forum prior to this competition (no law against that, just pointing out that I recognized it almost immediately). I enjoyed the song and felt it was mid pack for the compeition - my favourite part was absolutely the bridge where you have the falsetto singing (giving it a pink floyd sound). Now I recall it, I think I commented that there was too much in the mix - too many guitars - which is sounds like you have fixed.

If I Told You - Mutrins
Fantasic singing. Will definately bring in ears because it sounds so authentic and sincere. Very good production too. I can say that if I heard this on radio I would like it (and it wouldnt sound out of place) but I wonder if there couldnt be a bit more daring in the song itself, so it takes me somewhere new musical - A good example being the song from ScenesFromPalacio which goes into much more daring territory

Flying Daredevil in the Sky - Onewholovesrock
Love how in your videos you just get hairier! The wood panelling in the background gives you this forest cabin kind of vibe. Anyway on to the song - I enjoyed it! I was left wondering what the meaning is. I came to the conclusion that you are talking about the bald eagle, the symbol of America - which itself is actually a dangerous predator. Solid effort, well played

Bourbon Street - The S

Vocals, delivery and production top notch. the little plinky instrument reminded me of Goyte. I can see how this song might well clean up in the competition (like your others, which are all tastefully done!) - I was hoping for a bit more variation to suck me in (as characterized in the very next song "saddest man"!)

Stuck With You - Road Dog - Pleasant sounding, romantic song. A little too sparse musically to be a jazz standard, but the melody is good so maybe with more instruments it could be.

The City Falls Into Your Eyes - ScenesFromPalacio - I like it, nice harmonies. The carousel sound at the end is a nice touch, and so are the city sound at the start of the song.

Please Don't Let the Music Die - Brelizabeth - I like your other version better (the one with the guy singing and you doing harmony). I think something with the syncopation(?) of your voice and the guitar beat makes it sound less emotional to me. That being said, I still love any version of this song, and it was one of my favorite songs of this competition.

Touch Me - EmilyEmily - Nice power ballad, nice vocals and melody. This is my type of music.

Lies! - Jambrains - All the parts I like are there - power pop music, good vocals, catchy melody, professional production, nice guitar solo - somehow the "lies" part just does not connect that well with me. But it is still a really good song.

Wall - Mike B - I like how the song moves along, it never gets boring. Maybe make the vocals on the chorus louder in the mix, to make it stand out more. Cool guitar playing.

If I Told You - Mutrins - Smooth, romantic singing, and catchy melody. Very creative arrangement for the song, which keeps it interesting. This should be on the radio.

O2 (Oxygen) - fabkebab - Great job on the vocals, great song all over!

Flying Daredevil in the Sky - Onewholovesrock - Great chorus, very catchy and paints a vivid metaphorical picture. Good job on the vocals.

Bourbon Street - The S - Everything comes together very nicely on this song. Vocals are a perfect fit for the catchy melody and great guitar playing. The song has a distinctive mood to it that fits the lyrics very well.

Thank you for your votes guys and gals, appreciate it. It's been a busy week/month, not so many ups but rather way too many downs, so these news are truly welcomed. Thanks!

I'll return shortly to post my comments.

Great turn out, great songs and a big thank you to Paul who hosted flawlessly as always.

Cheers,

I enjoyed listening to this month's entries and my two favorites were those from The S and Mutrins, so congratulations to both!

Bourbon Street is a wonderful slice of rootsy music -- love the something's-a-bit-different-here singing and the picking and the bittersweet lyric. More and more, I find myself looking for this type of music to listen to.

If I Told You sounds like something that could be on Top 40 radio already -- and I mean that in a good way; the lyric is strong (though there's a line or two I would want to change if I were in charge (ha!))  but overall it's a very smooth and catchy pop song with a solid but nicely spare production and good vocals.

I especially liked Emily's, too.

Envious of all the musical talent on display in this month's contest!

Congrats to The S- Bourbon Street got my top score. I was sure the song would win after the first listen.

Here are my notes while listening to the songs:

Disclaimer: These are solely my musical opinions, which I have been known to be outright wrong and to change my mind at times.

All songs have been listened to twice, some even more.

1)   These are The Days

I’m guessing this is a lyric first song.  What gave it away is that there is a lyric and melody mismatch and there are extra syllables (notes) here and there. I found that some words can be taken out to make the melody in this song flow better.

2)   Stuck With You

A very jazzy, old style song. I can hear it becoming a jazz standard but in this case it would need more musical production to sell the song.

3) The City Falls Into Your Eyes

Steve, you’ve got Brit-Pop down to perfection. Not much to say, it was a pleasant listen.  Nice atmospheric tune.

4)   Touch Me

Nice emotional singing- it reminded me of the ‘90s. For me, it’s usually the melody that sells a song and if the music and lyrics are great, it makes for a lethal combo. In this case, I found that the melody needed a bit more variety between the verses and chorus.

5)   Lies!

Nice production. Catchy melody. I’m not the best musician, so take this with a stride, but I felt the guitar solo was an opportunity for you to do something epic, at least that's what I wanted to hear.

6)   Wall

What a surprise to hear Mike go heavy rock! The bridge/outro is a nice contrast to the heaviness of the  song. Good job keeping the contrasting vocal parts continuing smoothly in the song. Guitar work is excellent as usual.

7)   If I Told You

Great melody and excellent singing. The most radio ready song I’ve ever heard on the Muse. Lyrically, this is the perfect song for young females who still believe in romance (and haven’t been shot down by the reality of being married.) Love the snaps. My only issue is the piano riff got really repetitive being in both the verses and chorus. After a while, my ears wanted to hear some fresh piano notes.

8)   Oxygen

The most unique hook of all the songs. To me, it sounds like a song from the 80s. For me, the bridge felt too long. I would suggest shortening it to four lines, and removing these lines:

Giver of life
For my children, for my wife

Only because these lines take my mind away from the imagery you’ve created of feeling high on oxygen.

9)   Flying Daredevil in The Sky

I wish I can play the guitar and sing live like that in one take. Kudos Joe. I enjoyed this one and scored it pretty well. I can hear it with full production and I think it’s the Poppiest song I’ve heard from you.

10)   Bourbon Street

Enjoyed every minute of it. The guitar/banjo playing is stellar. Music and melody is fantastic.

-Bres song is awesome and touched me musically and lyrically

-S's song was produced awesomely and his signature sound rang throughout in wonderful fashion.

And thanks to Paul for running the match!!

Thanx to Paul for running this and non -contestant voters..

These Are The Days - Eric Borgos -Enjoyable easy listening country flavoured pop with some nice changes -especially like the movement n melody  of the pre-chorus part

Stuck With You - Road Dog - Admire your sense of adventure trying something new - and its refreshing hearing some different chords in this comp..The sloppy single snare drummer feels abit surplus to requirements-but i dig the songs vibe n personality and the chorus is cool

The City Falls Into Your Eyes - ScenesFromPalacio - Chorus is memorable n intuitive -song is inventive n melodic..Track has great keyboard from Pete too..I'm proud of it..Know what you mean about "whimsical " lyrics Fab, but i like them like that.Yes i do always start with the tune/chords and write lyrics on top

Please Don't Let the Music Die - Brelizabeth -Very polished sounding sad folk/country ballad with a heartfelt lyric..Your voice sounds beautiful-has a great lilt.

Touch Me - EmilyEmily -Very professional sounding modern pop ballad..I really like the verses, the choice of notes and the freedom of phrasing there -but the chorus -tho catchy- felt alot less creative to me if i'm honest

Lies! - Jambrains -Epic 80s sounding pop/rock.Moves pretty well and has a decent energy

Wall - Mike B -early 70s progressive pop/rock..Has shades of crazy horse in the sound,,The little harmonised breakdown was my fave bit..

If I Told You - Mutrins-  Eyebrows raised, furrowed brow keening modern r&b ballad pop.Nice simple production ideas with the finger clicks

O2 (Oxygen) - fabkebab -Enjoyable upbeat indie pop/rock track..Really well performed/produced with good sense of drama..-Great drums.Intelligent lyric and decent songwriting..Love the middle 8..Good track

Flying Daredevil in the Sky - Onewholovesrock -The verse melody sounds maddeningly familiar -think its this m-tho i'm sure on your part its not intentional.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PNfnNBDatY

.Song has an enjoyable vibe n personality tho - I'm sold abit by your energy !

Bourbon Street - The S -Polished lyric and a great vocal performance and tasteful production as usual.Don't think this is as strong as your last couple of offerings being honest, but hey you won very easily with it, so its obviously impressing the people who vote here songwritingwise vastly more than it does me.For my taste needs another bit musically for one

Hey folks, congrats again to the winners and here are my comments:

These Are The Days

Oh how I love the cadence of the lyrics right off the bat in the second line, especially with the words "...drippingly ironic" - but I admit my lexicon is no so vast as to include "mellifluously"  so I had to look it up. This song has some contrast for me between  the verses and the pre-chorus/chorus in terms of how literal the imagery is.  The melody is quite catchy though.

The City Falls Into Your Eyes

I feel as if I am transported back into pre-swinging London!  I dig how the alternative melody resolves on the 2nd and 4th lines of the verses.  How do you keep coming up with these fresh melodies?  The break with the piano and guitar after the bit about the carousel is great as well as the final harmonies!

Please Don't Let the Music Die

Really nice acoustic guitar complimented by piano?  or chimes? Nice touch.  The melody of the chorus is indeed different from that of the verses and the "oh ohs" reinforce but also lift the feel of the song. The lyrics and the idea in general of the song remind me of Billy Joel's Miami 2017 or "Discovery" off of Rush's 2112.

Touch Me

Really professional sounding!  The contrast of the verses and the chorus is strong here, and it has a good and sometimes surprising melody albeit in subtle doses.  I could totally see Lita Ford doing a cover of this!

Lies!

Cool driving rhythm here and I love the power of the chorus! The muted guitar starting at 1:00 is great!   The variety added by the stop time at ~2:00 works well just prior to that sweet guitar solo too.

Wall

The opening to this song is very cool,  reminds me a bit of Jukebox Hero + Tom Sawyer.  The raw guitar solo is very cool, kind of Neil Young-like.  The bridge works quite well too.

If I Told You

The piano intro is fun in the sense that it tricks the listener that this will be a totally happy song.  Really nice delivery on the vocals with a nice melody.

This is a great line "Is there a possibility of our worlds turning one from two? "  Not sure if I dig the finger snaps but the strings (or synth ?)  along with the adding of more vocals (but in a tempered way)later in the song really raise this piece to a higher level.

O2 (Oxygen)

I love the accenuation on the words "Each breath slowly rising"  and then the drum lead in to the next part really helps the build up.  The unpredictability of the chorus is great - especially on the line "O2 - O2 - O2".  I can't quite get into the bridge, maybe it sounds a little forced, but I like the tune overall.  Having hiked at elevations over 4000m I can identify!

Flying Daredevil in the Sky

Boy the guitar playing is great and the choices about muting/dynamics with the strings vs bringing up the volume is really good.  I like how you re-worked the delivery of the lyrics so as to not sound rushed - especially on the 1st line of the chorus.

Bourbon Street

Love that intro but I can't tell if it's a mandolin or just tremolo a la Tarrega - and I dig how it comes back in one form or another such as at ~ 1:30.  Such a classic, and timeless tune as always!

Cheers,

Pete

What the fuck is this!? Lol

Never heard this crazy song before.

But yes, I hear a little resemblance in the first part of the verse melody. Interesting.

I took the time to listen to all of the songs.

It seems like a long time since I followed one of these contests, and this one took me a little by surprise.

I like surprises.

The giant pleasure I found is in the way most everybody stood so tall and owned their territory through definitive performances.

Thank you.
