Are We There Yet?

Lyrics/Melody: Eric Borgos

Vocals/Music: Chris Davidson

Verse 1:

Just a little boy

full of dreams

and counting stars

A world of magic innocence

in the backseat

of our car

Pre-Chorus:

Singing to the radio

playing all those silly games

with every mile passing by

it will never be the same

Chorus:

Are we there yet?

How much longer more to go

Are we there yet?

Riding down that open road

Verse 2:

Like headlights on the highway

we move on

through the night

Each year

a mile marker

of our sadness and delight

Pre-Chorus:

Singing to the radio

windows down, as I drive

on the winds of a summer breeze

those memories come alive

Chorus:

Are we there yet?

How much longer more to go

Are we there yet?

Riding down that open road

Are we there yet?

Are we there yet?

Are we there

Fourth of July

Not sure if this song is about getting old, reflecting on life's decisions, ice cream, or the Fourth of July.

Maybe all of the above.

Verse 1:

Hey old timer, years of lines on your face

canyons of misery, carved by rivers of mistakes

Now you’re leanin’ way back under a clear blue sky,

sippin’ on a cold beer on the Fourth of July

Verse 2:

A life against the sands of time is ice cream in the sun

you’re born, you grow, love if you’re lucky, get old and then you’re done.

So I’ll have a big scoop of your finest rocky road

and taste sweet life as it melts away with liberty a la mode.

Chorus:

Oh sweet time, ... my, how you slip away

like a train near the speed of light,

flying past me... on the Fourth of July

Verse 3:

You often question the choices that you made,

the bad, the worse, that grand-theft auto, now they seem to fade

Hell-bent as a jail-bird, you finally learned to fly.

Now you’re sippin’ on a cold beer on the Fourth of July.

Bridge:

Happy Birthday America! You’ve weathered more than me.

I’m not your model citizen, but it’s not lost on my wretched soul...

that I’m free.

I Woke Up From The Dead This Morning

Music/Lyric Steve Ison

Off to work again,hey ho

Just living day to day you know...

I woke up from the dead this morning

I saw her face and started walking

I called her through the pouring rain

but i could not seem to catch her name

Though my head was high my hands were shaking

My lips were dry my heart was breaking

I felt her move through all my senses

She broke down all of my defences

It wasn't just the way she was

I knew there'd been a change because...

I stood there frozen in my shoes

when i saw her face upon the news

There were cops and cars and sirens wailing

Smoke and guns and fires-a-flaming.

I looked down at the street below me

The same scene that the T.V showed me

I felt the room start spinning round

As my feet gave way i hit the ground

You thought it was a dream...but no..

I woke up from the dead this morning

I saw her face and started walking

I called her through the pouring rain

but i could not seem to catch her name

Though my head was high my hands were shaking

My lips were dry my heart was breaking

I felt her move through all my senses

She broke down all of my defences

"If You Knew"

Music and lyrics by Todd Leiter-Weintraub

LINK: https://soundcloud.com/poptodd/if-you-knew

You want bare bones? You got it! I recorded this one on my iPod's memo function in my bedroom. The sound levels are VERY quiet, and the vocals are... what they are. Good thing I'm posting the lyrics.

But, this is supposed to be about the song, itself. So I figured that I would enter it here and see what y'all think. I am just going to start rehearsing this with my band next week.

1.

I put on my outside smile

As I step out the front door

And I’ll admit that it’s been harder

But I won’t say a whole lot more

If you felt the things I’m feeling

If you saw the things I saw

You would let me throw my cards out

Then let me draw, draw, draw, draw, draw

2.

I smile through the morning

And I grimace through my day

And I’ll answer all your questions

But I won’t have much to say

If you knew the things I’m feeling

There’s things you’d never want to know

But please don’t read too much in to it

Just let it go, go, go, go, go

(bridge)

3.

These things I carry on my shoulders

They fit underneath my shirt

They say it will make me stronger

But they don’t say how much it hurts

If you felt the things I’m feeling

You just might never want to feel

If you lived the life I’m living

It’d make you reel, reel, reel, reel, reel

If you knew the things I’m knowing

There's things you’d never want to know

But please don’t read too much in to it

Just let it go, go, go, go, go

Let it go…

DAMNED IF I DO

Damned if I do

Damned if I do

Written, performed and recorded by Staypress

News flash courtesy alc31180 of freesound.org

V1

I'm stuck with a decision - exactly where to put my X

I've been sold with great precision and I know just what's coming next

Chorus

I'm damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't

But I can't help but feel that I'm wasting my vote

I'm caught between the devil and the deep blue sea

I know because I saw it on the BBC

V2

It's not a democratic vision to choose between fire and ice

I'm sick of politicians who promise me paradise

Chorus

Middle bit

...and the lesser of 2 evils is still evil

One is insane, the other not quite legal

One is fixated on building a wall

The other is determined to screw us all

V3

You can't trust your television - the news is what they want you to hear

So you have a brave decision to use your own mind my dear

Mars & Venus

Song/Lyrics/Vocals- Brette Elizabeth

Music/Vocals- A. Galucki

https://soundcloud.com/brette-elizabeth/mars-and-venus-female-male-duet

She shows up late- she’s running away again

She hesitates- she’s running away again

He crosses the line with a small crime- he’s walking away again

He’s so afraid of all the change- he’s walking away again

She wants to go- she’s making excuses

She doesn’t know - she’s making excuses

He says goodbye, he says let’s try- he’s so confused now

He says it’s fine, he says next time- he’s so confused now

Chorus

It’s gonna be alright

Love is a meteorite falling down from space

It’s gonna be alright

Mars and Venus will soon find their own way

She starts to cry and she’s falling to pieces

She hates to fight and she’s falling to pieces

He waits for her, he has no fear and he’s piecing the puzzle

He keeps it calm, he’s almost there and he’s piecing the puzzle

Chorus

Bridge

Mars and Venus collide

There’s a blaze, there’s a fire, there’s a flame

They’ll survive, they’ll survive…

Verse 4

She says it’s great- things are fine now

She says don’t wait- things are fine now

He takes the clue and makes the deal- he’s okay now

He’s not unsure, this time it’s real- he’s okay now

Chorus x2

Panspermia

By: Neel Modi

A song about the concept of panspermia, which proposes that life on Earth may have originated by organic matter arriving from space via a meteor or other cosmic transit system. This also suggests that while we as humans are naturally connected to every other living thing on the planet, we are also connected to everything in the universe - we are made of space dust, as it were.

Lyrics:

I came from very far away

An astronomical journey

Propagated on the meteor express

An answer to a great mystery

I lay dormant for eons

A gourmet primordial soup

Along came amino acids

And a dash of magical woo

We are the goo

That makes up me and you

And everything at the zoo

Panspermia

I’m one with all the people

Animals in this place

Don’t forget about the plants

And all the stuff in outer space

It’s true we are so special

We won the cosmic lottery

Jackpots are still floating out there

Beyond all we can see

We are the goo

That makes up me and you

And everything at the zoo

Panspermia

Yeah

Gooinas unite

In a cold dark night

Evolve ‘n take flight

To survive

Gooians unite

Despite our plight

We all just might

Find a place to survive

Gooians unite

Chances slight

Water and light

Carbon bite

Gooians unite

At the speed of light

Black and white

It’ll be alright

We are the goo

That makes up me and you

And everything at the zoo

Panspermia

LIE WITH ME (Jambrains Feat. MonnoDB)

Lyrics: Jambrains & MonnoDB

Music: Jambrains

Vocals: Jambrains & MonnoDB

Tell me your fears

Tell me what you see

When you close your eyes at night

When you fall asleep

Do you see your past

and the secrets that you keep

Or do you see your future

and are you lying with me?

Heavens a rumour

but hell is a fact

Fear is a liar

stabs you in the back

Share your pain

and I'll share mine

Then lie beside

'till the end of time

We are running from our ghosts

away from who we used to be

The chains that tie us to the past

must break to set us free

We are running out of hope

and we are running out of time

but can we break the curse

if I am yours and you are mine?

Yesterday's lost

put it from your mind

Don't tell me the stories

of the things you left behind

Let's make a new story

worth fighting for

Then lie beside me

forevermore

Tell me your secrets

I'll tell you mine

Show me the horrors

that would not stay behind

Touch my scars

I'll heal your wounds

Then lie beside me

'till the end of time

CHORUS

As the flame of hope was dying

and despair

was slowly taking hold

A spotlight shines

on you, on me

and on our stories yet untold

CHORUS

The melody came to me while we were grocery shopping Sunday morning, and it all came together so fast.

https://soundcloud.c...watching-over-1

I'm Watching Over

Verse 1

They won't let me see

that fires on the way

until they fill my grave

while my words still carry weight

I battled my share of demons

I know the shadows where they hide

I can't keep them from comin'

But I can stand there by your side

I'll stand there by your side

Chorus 1

And I hope you know

No matter where you go

I'm watching over

I'm watching over

When the darkness falls

I'm the echo in the hall

I'm watching over

I'm watching over

Verse 2

They don't want you to see

that fires on the way

before they stomp my grave

my spirits still in play

When the times comes to battle evil

You don't have to fight alone

If I can't be there to raise you

I can damn sure guide you home

I'll damn sure guide you home

Chorus 2

And I hope you know

No matter where you go

I'm watching over

I'm watching over

When the darkness falls

I'm the echo in the hall

I'm watching over

I'm watching over

When your mind can't sleep

I'm the breeze on your cheek

I'm watching over

I'm watching over

When the doubt creeps in

I'm the whisper on the wind

I'm watching over

I'm watching over

I'm watching over

I'm watching over

(Churchill)

This...Day...Now

We are, the masters of our fate;

That the task which has been set us

Is not above our strength;

That its pangs and toils

are not beyond our endurance.

As long as we have faith, in our cause,

and, an unconquerable will-power

we shall never surrender

When your mind can't sleep

I'm the breeze on your cheek

I'm watching over

I'm watching over

When the doubt creeps in

I'm the whisper on the wind

I'm watching over

I'm watching over

I'm watching over

I would consider a "5" as "This person obviously doesn't get my song, and if he/she heard 'Yesterday' by Paul McCartney before it was a hit, he/she probably wouldn't get it either" :)/> :)/>

Here are my comments for each song:

Fourth of July - RoadDog - It would be good if the chorus had some extra instruments or something to make it stand out. I actually like the verses better than the chorus. Although, maybe it was just the first chorus that felt that way to me. The 2nd chorus seemed fine to me. The bridge is good because it sounds different, and the chorus after that fits well because it contrasts with the sound of bridge plus you have extra stuff at the end.

I Woke Up From The Dead This Morning - ScenesFromPalacio - I like it, very catchy, never boring. The chorus sounds more like a pre-chorus though; I wish there was something bigger after it. I like how everything comes together in a big crescendo at the end of the song.

If You Knew - PopTodd - Catchy, with good lyrics.

DAMNED IF I DO - daryl1968 - Catchy melody, well sung and well produced.

Mars & Venus - Brette Elizabeth/A. Galucki - Very pretty song, but I am not sure if this needed to be a duet. It works fine as a duet (I gave it a high score), but it might sound better with just you (Brette) singing it, and then maybe having the duet on the chorus like you have it now, and like on parts like "she’s running away again". Also, maybe I am totally off base about this, but it seems like on the verses, the lines the girl and the guy sing should be reversed. The guy should talk about the girl, the girl about the guy, because you have it written in the 3rd person ("he"/"she"). Either way, if you sang the whole thing yourself (with harmony from a guy) I think it would be more romantic sounding, but hard to know until I hear it that way.

Panspermia - Mondo Art - The cosmic sounding music is a good fit for the lyrics. I did not think I was going to like it, but I did.

LIE WITH ME - Jambrains/MonnoDB - I love it. One of my favorite songs you have done so far. My only comment would be that the chorus has a lot of words, making it a little less impactful.

I'm Watching Over - Clint Leonard - I like the melody and vocals and the Churchill part. Good song.

Hi folks! Thanks again that was fun!

Here are my comments, take 'em with a grain of salt:

Are We There Yet:

I like the pause after the the end of the first line - it helps to set the tone of the song.

The lyrics didn't grab me but the line about the mile marker was good. My favorite part is

the build to the line "riding down that open road"

Also the percussion at ~3:00 is cool too.

I woke up from the dead:

The bouncieness of the lyrics + beat is fun

Great change-up at "You thought it was a dream"

Love the outro!

If You Knew:

Awesome melody and I love the lyric about your "outside smile"

I like the instrumental bridge but not the transition at the end of it.

I really really like how the choruses(?) are all different

Damned If I Do:

Like the melody and the catchy chorus. The line about the "Devil and the deep blue sea is great"

Bridge works well, especially with the synth(?) in the background.

I really like the "electronic effect" right after the word "decision"

The bit about the zombies was funny too.

Mars & Venus:

I like the melody and the guitar fills. The duet approach is cool, kind of reminds me

of the Canadian band Whitehorse and their song "The Boat Song"

There are a spots where the lyrics seemed rushed due to trying to fit all of the syllables but

not too bad. The line "Love is a meteorite falling down from space" is cool but I am biased as

I have a very similar line in a song I wrote last year! D'oh! (but it is a very different song)

Panspermia:

I mentioned this on the song-review boards but I love the title, like Pangea+BigBang+Reproduction

(or maybe just 'production' in this case!), and I still love the opening and the "circuit dialog"

The percussive effects are very cool.

I really like the chorus and the effect on "Paaaanspermiaaaah!"

Lie with Me:

The melody of the line "Do you see your past and the secrets that you keep" is awesome!

I also really like the melody and the lyrics of the chorus. The power chords of the guitar are great,

but I would prefer them louder :)/> I don't grade on performance or production but the production is

really good and the vocals remind me of Sarah Brightman in parts.

I'm Watching Over:

Boy I dig the intro, the synth works really well against the almost staccato guitar.

Good beat and the chorus is catchy. The bit with Churchill is brilliant over the music!

Pete

I Woke Up From The Dead This Morning - ScenesFromPalacio

Nice tune! Very catchy -- a real toe tapper -- Reminds me of "Mr Blue Sky!"

Production was stellar from the opening notes.

Great tune from start to finish -- love the solo.

This is my fave!

*Found myself humming this song this morning out of the blue -- makes me think I should have given it an even higher score than I did! It deserves a 1.0!

Are We There Yet? - Eric Borgos/Chris Davidson

Well constructed, well performed song.

Production wise, the bass is overwhelming at times

Overall I felt the hook and/or hook wasn't strong enough to carry it this for almost 5 minutes

Fourth of July - RoadDog

Nice song overall. I like your vocal and the mood.

Nothing stood out as bad, but nothing really grabbed my attention either. A little long given the lack of variation.

Production could have been a bit better to filter some of the boomy lows and create a little more separation.

If You Knew - PopTodd

This is a very nice song -- love the melody and simplicity. Reminds me of a Conway Twitty tune.

That said I don't care for the low-fi recording -- it's taking away from an otherwise great tune.

DAMNED IF I DO - daryl1968

Cool style -- very Talking Heads. :)

Production is nice and well performed

The hook itself didn't grab me as much as I hoped -- it would haove really propelled it to the top for me

Mars & Venus - Brette Elizabeth/A. Galucki

Nice guitar -- and I think a nice melody in places, but the vocals are very pitchy in places which really pulls me out of the experience

I think you both have a nice voices -- but you need to keep recording until you get the take where you are both in tune -- hard to do together but

it is required to really unlock the potential of a song

This song got boring to me especially clocking in at 4 minutes -- needs a catchier hook and more variation

Panspermia - Mondo Art

Nice production! Nice opening too. :)

Nice verse build up

Chorus was a bit of a let down after the nice build up -- the last line 'Panspermia' is your hook and quite catchy -- would like to have heard that repeated

I was engaged throughout and consider this an above average entrance for sure! Well done!

LIE WITH ME - Jambrains/MonnoDB

Always enjoy your epic tunes Jambrains.

MonnoDB's vocal complement's this song well. I like the contrast in sonic quality between the verse and the chorus.

Love the epic feel.

I was never bored, always engaged. I perhaps would have like the chorus to "soar" a bit more -- but still very nice.

Are We There Yet?

Great hook in the chorus, and love the title. I wonder how it works nowadays, though, with all the kids who have their own devices to keep them occupied and minivans are equipped with DVD players, etc. But this makes for a nice little piece of nostalgia. I felt the song was over at the 3 minute mark, I don't think you needed more repeats of first verse and more choruses.

Fourth of July

Great blues licks and hook on the "Fourth of July" lyric. The chorus kinda of falls flat and the "Fourth of July" hook is not nearly as hooky as the verse. I would restructure the song so each verse ends with a "Fourth of July" hook and lyric. The "oh sweet time" section could be done just once as a bridge - so the structure could be verse-verse-bridge-verse

I Woke Up From The Dead This Morning

Great melodic work in the super long chorus. I appreciate the unconventional structure. Great bridge, you could repeat the dream line a couple of times. I think since you have an instrumental section to end the song, you don't need one in the bridge as much.

If You Knew

Great tension in the verse and release in the chorus. I like the "draw, draw, go, go, reel, reel," etc parts, it's a nice way to cap off each chorus.

DAMNED IF I DO

Loved this! Very clear idea and development. Super catchy chorus. If there's one nit, the BBC line doesn't really stand up well against the rest. Great bridge - very different from the rest. My top pick from this contest.

Mars & Venus

Really liked the "she" and "he" duality in the verses. The chorus is a nice change. I would extend "Mars" and "Ve-" with longer notes, you rushed over them. Suggestion to make that work: "Mars and Venus will find their way"

LIE WITH ME

Love the chorus - powerful melody and lyric. The girl verse vs boy verse is a very strong contrast - it's a little jarring, and that's not only from the voice difference - the music itself is vey different, I think that difference could be reduced a bit.

I'm Watching Over

Great chorus. Maybe a little obvious, but "I'm watching over YOU" would feel a lot more resolved - maybe you didn't want that, though. Loved the lyrics in the choruses, the idea of "when..." and "I'll be" - great stuff. Didn't care for the Churchill speech bit - it detracts from the song, IMO.

Thanx for the vote here -Thought the standard of songs was unusually high for this comp- Was a pleasure listening

Thanx alot to the non contestant voters n Paul for generously putting his time into running it too :)

Are We There Yet? - Eric Borgos/Chris Davidson - Has a kinda nostalgic expansive emotional resonance i really like..Think the chorus is beautiful n timeless..Lovely psychedelic americana..Very good song.

Fourth of July - RoadDog -Kinda epic 70s style bluesy/folk..Reminds me abit of Neil Young The Oh sweet time was cool - mellowed things up nicely..

If You Knew - PopTodd - Lovely resonant song with excellent simple intuitive tune n great crafted hard-bitten lyric..Has a real intimacy as a 1+1 i really dig , but of course would be very cool with a production too..

DAMNED IF I DO - daryl1968 - Woh your voice sounds so like Ricky from the muse here !..This is very catchy n quirky

Mars & Venus - Brette Elizabeth/A. Galucki -Emotonal ballad with some very tasteful playing and strong vocals..

Panspermia - Mondo Art- Thought this was very intelligent n creative electro art pop..Great push in

the verse..The alien vocal sound is fantastic..The last note on the pan-sper-mi-a hook is fab - really makes it for me..Very cool

LIE WITH ME - Jambrains/MonnoDB - Well crafted heavy rock ballad..Well written n melodic.Definitely has an 80s feel for me

I'm Watching Over - Clint Leonard - Thought this was a great track.. Very resonant.Loved the chorus..I really like the emotional push of the vocal line/rythm and the unexpected notes you hit against some of the chords here..This actually has a kinda indie alt 80s feel for me too

Are We There Yet? - Eric Borgos/Chris Davidson

I enjoyed the music and really liked the verse melody. I felt like the chorus melody lacked oomph in comparison to the verses.

Fourth of July – RoadDog

The music reminded me of 'Blue on Black' by Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band. Enjoyed the melody in the verses.

I Woke Up From The Dead This Morning – ScenesFromPalacio

Always a pleasure to listen to a Steven Ison tune. This one got my highest score and the guitar work is excellent as usual.

If You Knew – PopTodd

Enjoyed the melody throughout. I felt it needed more of a change up melody wise other than the instrumental part to keep my ear interested- but that can be done with more production too. You can hear lots of potential with this 1+1 already.

Damned if I Do - daryl1968

Very poppy tune- I enjoyed it from finish to end. Got my second highest score.

Panspermia - Mondo Art

Very unique lyrics and subject but the melody wasn't catchy enough to keep my interest. It's more a song to set the ambience/mood or maybe for a scientific ambient mood album.

Lie with Me - Jambrains/MonnoDB

Great duet- really liked the power music behind the male vocals.

I'm Watching Over - Clint Leonard

Nice guitar work and I enjoyed the tune. My only nit was the main line 'I'm watching over.' For my ears, it sounded like an incomplete sentence or thought/melody to me. I kept wanting to hear 'I'm watching over ____' (suggestions: you, us, etc.)- But that's just me.

Thanks everyone for your comments. Very interesting to see the scores range from 1.5 to 4.5 – it just shows you how different people's musical tastes are.
