Best opening line to a song

Recommended Posts

Out of all the nights I remember

Of all the loves I recall

There are many who live in my memory

But you were the sweetest of all

Spotcheck Billy got down on his hands and knees

He said "Hey mama, hey let me check your oil all right?"

She said "No, no honey, not tonight.

Come back Monday, come back Tuesday, and then I might."

"Hey Andy you're better than your past,

As she winked at me and drained her glass,

Cross-legged on the barstool like nobody sits anymore".

Jason Isbell - Elephant.

I'm a sucker for an overly sentimental song and this one is just perfect. I think Jason Isbell is such a wonderful lyricist, vastly under appreciated.

** Spoiler alert**  ;-)

The fact that you realise she is dead, or at least dying, by the time the last verse comes really puts that opening line into perspective... "Like nobody sits anymore".  Fantastic songwriting.

I just discovered him, Murphster -- a couple days ago. Traveling Alone -- really like it. I'll have to check out more. The lyric you cite is good. So he writes both good music and good lyrics plus he can sing. And his wife plays the violin for him. Looking forward to getting to know his music better.

That's great, I'm pretty new to him myself but that album "Southeastern" has become one of my favourite albums of all time. I can't stop playing it. It's an amazing thing to discover someone new with a back catalogue already in place - it's like Christmas! ;-)

Ok, songsters and lyricists, or lyrists, (as Sammy Cahn described himself)

What is your favorite opening line to one of your own lyrics?   I'll start.

It all went kinda downhill round the third or fourth wife.  - from Life Insurance Blues

I think

something in the way she walks

is very  evocative it  pulls you straight into the song with pure intrigue

it's one hell of an opening line and is probably the best beatle song and is a favourite of mine

George Harrison  (northern songs )

all the best

Mike
