44 Years to Santa Fe

V1

In the Army,

he served in Greece and Turkey,

Kansas and Maryland,

Thailand, Vietnam.

CHORUS

They wrote for 44 years.

But she don’t write no more.

V2

When he was home,

they left each other notes,

about bread and milk,

the kids and the dentist.

CHORUS

They wrote for 44 years.

But she don’t write no more.

V3

And she was cold

up there in Ohio.

She wanted to go

to New Mexico.

CHORUS

They wrote for 44 years.

But she don’t write no more.

V4

After the cancer,

he counted their letters.

Now he counts the miles.

He counts while he drives.

OUTRO

While he drives to Santa Fe.

To Santa Fe to lay flowers on her grave,

flowers on her grave, flowers on her grave.

(The Island of) Felicidar*

V1:

There's an island, not too far from Madeira

Nobody goes there 'cause nobody knows where it's at

A place you can be who you are

The natives call it Felicidar

I'll tell you how to get there

It's not on any map

CHORUS:

Sail beyond the blue horizon

(Then) reach for the brightest star

When you think that you've found Heaven

You're on the island of Felicidar

V2:

I stumbled upon it sailing one Sunday morning

When life had become too confused and complex

An island alive with eucalyptus

Friendly faces and ocean mist

I think to myself

This is as good as it gets

CHORUS

BRIDGE:

It's a dream, more than a place

A state of grace

Shelter from the stormy sea

A harbor to hide you away

V3:

I tell you this 'cause I think you can keep a secret

So keep it close to your heart wherever you are

When you need to escape

Or just need a break

Let out your sails

Head for Felicidar

CHORUS X 2

* Pronounced Feh-lee'-see-dar''

Wishful Thinking

v1

Miguel came home with a purple heart

Maria was waiting true

Boy yells out in the middle of the night

The girl she just don’t know

v2

Sissy’s all smiles ‘cause Daddy’s back

Finally feeling whole

Woman won’t speak of those days no more

I just grab firm and hold

Chorus

You can always come home

The addresses keep changing

You can always come home

The hours keep marching

You can always come home

If wishes were only true

v3

Miguel's gotta fix it on his own

Maria offers more

Boy sails off in a one seat boat

Girl learns quick alone

v4

Sissy sleeps with short-time friends

Plays the heroine well

Woman is mine to have and hold

(but this) knight can't break her shell

Chorus

Bridge

All of the wounded soldiers are smiling now

All of the lonely lovers are content now

I’m tired of blinking for old white lies

I just wish we could be honest and cry

instrumental break

Chorus

You can always come home

The addresses keep changing

You can always come home

The hours keep marching

You can always come home

If wishes were only true

Same, Bad Feelings

[V1]

When you are feeling down, and you’re not feeling pretty,

When nothing goes the way you planned,

Should you become unwound, taken down by this cold city,

Come around, you know I’ll understand.

I will comfort you,

I’ll pull you through,

I’ve had those same, bad feelings, too.

[V2]

No need to be afraid, no need to feel abandoned,

No need to face this world alone,

No need to play their games, I am always your companion,

You don’t have to make it on your own.

I will comfort you,

I’ll pull you through,

I’ve had those same, bad feelings, too.

[br]

When there’s no rhyme and there’s no reason

We need someone we can believe in.

We need a friend who’s on our side …

Sometimes …

Sometimes.

[V3]

So, when you’re feeling blue and you don’t have the answers,

Pick up the phone and I’ll be there.

Somebody let you down, or maybe circumstances

Placed you in your game of solitaire.

I will comfort you,

I’ll pull you through,

I’ve had those same, bad feelings, too.

I’ve had those same, bad feelings, too.

The More Handsome I Get

(Verse)

I was sittin in some po dunk bar

Drinkin liquor from a mason jar

And you come struttin in that old front door

I knew that with sufficient time

And alcohol I’d make you mine

So drink it up I’ll buy you plenty more

(Verse)

You said your boyfriend ran away

To find true love with his friend Ray

And that you need a man that’s strong and true

Well looking round this train wreck bar

I just may be your lucky star

Quite possibly the best that you can do

(Chorus)

The more you drink

The more handsome I get

You’re about 3 shooters

From dragging home Brad Pitt

A memory you’re not soon to forget

The more you drink

The more handsome I get.

(Verse)

Well it’s getting near to closin time

I was thinking bout my closin line

So I asked if I could dare to walk you home

I may not be no movie star

But here I am and here you are

Just 1 more drink and no one sleeps alone

(Chorus)

The more you drink

The more handsome I get

You’re about 3 shooters

From dragging home Brad Pitt

A memory you’re not soon to forget

The more you drink

The more handsome I get.

(Bridge)

Oh the white hot passion

On your new kitchenette

Please don’t sober up to fast

I haven’t finished yet

( Part. Chorus)

A memory you’re not soon to forget

The more you drink

The more handsome I get.

Are You Staying Home (Tonight)?

V1

Got your full blown makeup on

Rollers in your hair

Changed out of a dozen pair of jeans

Getting all decked out again

For girl's night revelry?

Or is that racy wonderbra for me?

Chorus

Are you staying home

Tonight?

A simple yes or no's

All right

I don't mean to be a hound

(But) lately, I can't nail you down

Are you staying home

Tonight?

V2

Skittish as a thoroughbred

In red stiletto heels

Racing through a cloud of French perfume

Your smile is not an answer

A wink is not a clue

S'il vous plaît, what do you plan to do?

Chorus

Br

I'm stoking up a fire

Chilling us some wine

But I'll just watch some football

If I'm just wasting time

Chorus

Any Wind

Yes, she’s hot

But she’s a headache

You can take it from one who knows

She’ll be swayed and so persuaded

By the way the prevailing wind blows

If she’s not in your arms tonight

Well, the devil only knows

No trust, no roots, so she rambles ‘round

For a greener grass that can’t be found

(chorus)

And I know you don’t want

To take the time to get to know her

But keep a finger in the air

Cuz any wind can blow her

A bit ‘a mystery

Keeps the loving fun

It always keep you coming back for more

Her brand of magic, cold and tragic

In time will have you flat out on the floor

When it suits her she’ll pick you up

But not a second before

Nothing that she feels is ever stable

You should walk away, buddy, if you’re able

(chorus)

(bridge)

She’ll make you feel like her knight in shining armor

She’ll make you feel like the apple of her eye

But once she gets caught up in a new wind

She’ll be as vacant as the dead leaves blowing by

Yes, she’s hot

But when she cools

You’ll never feel a wind cut through so cold

She never lies, Lord, how you’ll try

To earn the promise that she’s never sold

When you feel the wind slice through

Don’t say that you weren’t told

(chorus)

The Streets Of York

V1

I don't think about my past

It's a suitcase I won't open

'Cause I'm afraid of painful memories

But fate has laid a path

And it fills my whole horizon

I can't hear the future

When the past is calling me...

Chorus

To an awkward little girl

Dreaming big for herself

And for all the world

What will I tell her now

About how I let her down

When I meet her 'round the Streets of York

V2

Will she greet me at the door

Or run by with a quick hello

Kicking up dusty ghosts of yesterday

Will she want something more

After meeting her tomorrows

I can't see the future

When the past shows me the way..

Chorus

To an awkward little girl

Dreaming big for herself

And for all the world

What will I tell her now

About how I let her down

When I meet her 'round the Streets of York

Bridge

So many have failed her, but I'm the biggest fraud

Can I stand and face her, when there's nothing to applaud.

She still has needs and dreams but they never left the streets...

Chorus

Of an awkward little girl

Dreaming big for herself

And for all the world

What will I tell her now

About how I let her down

When I meet her 'round the Streets of York

Outro

It broke my heart but I bent down to that little girl

She said she didn't mind that we didn't rock the world

She said that fame brings too much pain

So ordinary's fine

But as she quickly turned away

I saw the teardrops shine

And wound my way back through the Streets of York.

One Step At A Time

I hear you coming up the stairs

two at a time your so keen

Now I'm waiting for the pause

then three knocks is your routine

I'll make you wait a moment or two

before unlocking my door

You smile, say you were "just passing"

and called in like you had before

But before you pass my door

Want you to know for sure

One step at a time, baby

One step at a time

One kiss before midnight, baby

One kiss'll be fine

One wave from the window and I'll

watch you walk down the street

One step at a time

You rush around like there's no tomorrow

are you running out of time?

I've seen you laughing with your friends

is your reputation on the line?

Maybe there’s something wrong

and you’ve got only weeks to live

In that case come on and tell me

I'll give all that I can give

But if that's not how it is

If that's not how it is

One step at a time, baby

One step at a time

One kiss before midnight, baby

One kiss'll be fine

One wave from the window and I'll

watch you walk down the street

One step at a time

The clock strikes twelve and I hear the final chime

Resolutions desert me now is that so much a crime?

Your lips insist on breathing life into my skin

Awaking feelings I thought I'd buried deep within

Ohhh but hang on baby

I'm not giving in

I'm not giving in

One step at a time, baby

One step at a time

One kiss before midnight, baby

One kiss'll be fine

One wave from the window and I'll

watch you walk down the street

One step at a time

One step at a time

“Better Than I Used To Be”

V1

He started off a preacher’s only boy

The only time, in his life, he knew joy

But a gun brought his daddy down

On some dirt street in Illinois

V2

He stood scared while he watched his father bleed

Picking up the six-gun that was freed

He aimed to have his vengeance there

But was too young to do the deed

Br

He hung his little head in shame

And cried the tears no one could read

Ch

And while the church bells rung,

And while a choir sung…

…He swore, to himself, that he’d be,

“Better than I used to be”

V3

From the everglades to the desert sands

He turned outlaw, wanted, in the badlands

Some say the demons in his head

Fanned the fury of his hands

Br

Yeah, the last thing Sheriff Dillon saw

Was the blur of his right hand

Ch

And while the church bells rung,

And while a choir sung…

...A tattoo on his right hand reads,

“Better than I used to be

V4

It’s a mystery that’s still misunderstood

It’s a story of how the bad was turned to good

Where a woman gave her heart to

The man who’d steal it, if he could

V5

He was an outlaw, hardened by his trade

And the deal with the devil he had made

Some say she bartered her own soul

Others say, it’s how she prayed

Br

Some say she was an angel

Explaining why he seemed afraid

Ch

And the church bells rung,

And the choir sung…

…he promised her, that day, he’d be,

“Better than I used to be”

V6

He earned the reputation as a thief,

A scoundrel who would lie right through his teeth

But, in that church, a miracle

Had turned over a fresh new leaf

V7

Now, it’s said, he disappeared in ole Paris

But, it’s whispered that he died in Kentucky

Where it’s rumored that his headstone reads,

“Better than I used to be”

Why

Ch:

How can we forgive when we cannot forget

That day our towers fell

That day our people died

Not knowing, why

V:

September 11th

Armies and nations could not do

What was done on a suicide mission

Shot arrows of fear into the heart of America

But never pierced the American spirit

Ch:

How can we forgive when we cannot forget

That day our towers fell

That day our people died

Not knowing, why

V:

September 11th

They can tale their best shot at us

Sneak up, knock us down then celebrate

Firing bullets for America into the air

Each one carrying a message of hate

Ch:

How can we forgive when we cannot forget

That day our towers fell

That day our people died

Not knowing, why

Br:

We’ll rebuild and go on with our lives

We always do

And take care of unfinished business

Like we always do.

Ch:

How can we forgive when we cannot forget

That day our towers fell

That day our people died

Not knowing, why

Why

Happy

Verse

I didn't do happy, I didn't do smiles

Staring at my shoes, walking round for miles

Every day another shade of blue

Then I saw you and your big brown eyes

I saw your smile and to my surprise

Well, I was smiling too

Chorus

I didn't do happy til I met you

I didn't do sunny til you shone through

Now all the clouds have blown away

Got no sad words left to say

Every day's another happy day

Verse

Now I walk along with a spring in my step

Cause every day's getting better yet

And if I fall I know just what to do

I reach over and I take your hand

And I remember to understand

The world's a better place with me and you

Chorus

I didn't do happy til I met you

I didn't do sunny til you shone through

Now all the clouds have blown away

Got no sad words left to say

Every day's another happy day

Bridge

Now, I don't do sad, I don't do blue

I never look at these old shoes

Chorus

I didn't do happy til I met you

I didn't do sunny til you shone through

Now all the clouds have blown away

Got no sad words left to say

Every day's another happy day

Outtro

A happy day...

A happy day...

A happy day...

When I Lost You

Verse 1

I spin in my mind

Searching for likeness

Seeking a sign

A way out of madness

Verse 2

I juggle my thoughts

Touching each one lightly

Through memories wrought

I realize finally

Chorus

When I lost you I lost everything

I know it’s true

Pain is all remembering brings

I lost my groove

When I lost you

Verse 3

Desolation bites

Through night’s dark cover

Sets its fangs tight

Drains the blood of discovery

Verse 4

I cry to the light

For someone to hear me

To render aid in this fight

Help my recovery

Chorus

When I lost you I lost everything

I know it’s true

Pain is all remembering brings

I lost my groove

When I lost you

Tag

Yes, I lost my groove

When I lost you…

Garbage Man

I work all day at the county dump

Stackin’ garbage in the sun

Yeah, I work all day at that ol’ landfill

The stink and sweat, it ain’t no fun

I break my back just to make a hill

Filth and waste up to my ass

You know I bust my back just to build that hill

Toilin’ at this thankless task

‘Cause I’m the garbage man

Ain’t nobody ever gave a damn

I’m just the garbage man

I spend my nights at the Bar an’ Grille

Lookin’ for a girl to know

I spend all my nights at that local dive

But I ain’t never found me no love

Well, I don’t leave ‘til I drink my fill

Ain’t doin’ nobody no harm

You know, I don’t leave ‘til I’ve had my fill

‘Cause there ain’t nobody at home

‘Cause I’m the garbage man

Ain’t nobody ever gave a damn

I’m just the garbage man

Now the winter’s here an’ there ain’t no break

The garbage keeps comin’ in

Oh, the wind blows cold an’ my bones they ache

But them trucks just keep rollin’ in

I work all day at the county dump

Freezin’ out in the snow

Yeah, I work all day at that ol’ landfill

Wond’rin’ where my life did go

‘Cause I’m the garbage man

Ain’t nobody ever gave a damn

I’m just the garbage man

Bury my ass in a mountain of trash

That’s the way that I wanna go

Just bury my ass under a mountain of trash

It’s the only life that I know

I said just bury my ass

Under a mountain of trash

That’s the only life that I’ve known

Set Your Pride Aside

V1

She’s drinkin’ shots tonight

She’s the center of attention

Those big brown eyes are red

I wonder if she’ll listen

You’re missing her affection

She’s scouting substitutes

You don’t want to lose her

You know what you need to do

Chorus

Bite your tongue say you’re sorry

Better do it in a hurry

Say you misunderstood

Before she’s gone for good

Don’t matter if you’re right

Unless you want a fight

When it comes to love, better

Better set your pride aside

V2

She’s tearing up the dance floor

High heels across your heart

He’s pulling her in closer

Snugger than a winter scarf

She’s got her arms around him

She’s got her heart in tow

Don’t just sit here watching

Tell her what she wants to know

Chorus

Bridge

Take my advice ole friend

Don’t end up where I am

When she’s gone you’ll regret it

Every waking minute

Chorus

Tag

When it comes to love

Set your pride

Set your pride

Set your pride aside

Don’t matter if you’re right

Set your pride

Set your pride

Set your pride aside

To Dine with Kings and Queens

Supper came from the dumpster

by the burger joint on West Lee

I admit, I was surprised

how tasty scraps could be

Fifteen years in a prison

cut a man for spittin' on me

now, I walk the streets of filth

redemption don't come cheap

Chorus

Lord, I don't wanna die alone

and find my hungry bones

without a name, without a home

in a pauper's grave

Maybe, I'm a foolish man,

but I still believe

I deserve a second chance

to dine with Kings and Queens

Shelter's full again tonight

so, I brace for midnight snow

Someone found my cardboard stash

I have no place to go

Instrumental Bridge

Chorus

Lord, I don't wanna die alone

and find my hungry bones

without a name, without a home

in a pauper's grave

Maybe, I'm a foolish man,

but I still believe

I deserve a second chance

to dine with Kings and Queens

CONNECTION

When I bring up the previews

Of what is on today

I often find myself

Trying to find a way

To filter out the problems

Budding up from inside

I want to find a place

That I can run and hide

Looking for a connection

Without a deep reflection

I need to know

Before the show

Does it have a happy ending?

Will it leave me laughing on the floor?

I don't need another drama

About a daughter turned a whore

Will there be acrobatics?

Action scenes to treat the eyes?

Not interested in theatrics

Or watching people cry

Don't need deeper issues

To rattle round my brain

Begging for relief

Before I go insane

Looking for a connection

Without a deep reflection

I need to know

Before the show

Does it have a happy ending?

Will it leave me laughing on the floor?

Congratulations, Kim! Looking at my scores and looking at your lyric again, I suspect that I underscored your lyric - but it didn't matter in the end :)

My top mark went to JoeinJax (and I guessed it was you, Joe!). It's a good, fun lyric that could make a very good song!

I think I had Len's "Happy", with a couple of others in second spot.

While I had some scored higher than it seems they received on average from other voters, I can't quibble with the results. I found it hard to score (17 entries is a lot to balance out, I found!), and probably found myself having to give some absolute scores that were a little lower than I would have liked to give, purely for that reason.

Lots to enjoy in this month's entries, I thought. Well done, everyone who entered and thank you to Neil and SpanishBuddha!

Good worl all! - Ron

Congratulations Kim, Joe, and Len. Great lyrics!

I had Len's "Happy" tied for 1st with Ron's "Island of Felicidar", Alistair's "Same Bad Feelings" and Tracy's "Streets of York".

Kim's and Joe's, I had in a tie for second place with Ironknee's "Better Than I Used to Be" (don't know why that one didn't do better)

This was a very tough contest to score, for me. I thought so many were worthy of winning. A 4 way tie for 1st and a 3 way tie for second was the result of finally 'throwing my hands' up.

Thanks to Neal and spanishbuddha.

Are You Staying Home Tonight-Jonie

and

Happy-Len-- I had the last two as tied for 2nd place.

I had many tied for 3rd...

It was harder to score as Alistair mentioned with 17 entries. I had to mark many the same, as I didn't want to give someone a low mark, if the lyric was well-done, just because there were many of them. I would still love to have a .5 increments in the scoring, though I know this has been discussed and dismissed before. It would make it easier to distinquish as one clear above another, when there are so many entries. Just my take on it...

BUT.. I don't wanna start another scoring debate, so I will hush. B)

Thanks Neal for running this, and to our lone scorer, SpanishBuddhah for taking time to score on our contest.

and again, thanks!

Kimberly

Hey all......I didn't fair well, at all....but I've always said that you are only as good as others say you are.......I couldn't understand some of the work submitted, but they scored much better than I......congratulations! -Tom

I took a closer look at your score and realized that there was a zero in there. Somehow I missed inputing a number. Sorry about that.

Anyway, this raises your score to 103.

I thought that zero was really strange. Don't think I've seen one when looking at earlier contests. Good catch, Neal.

Congrats Kim. Well deserved.

And thanks for all the "Joe love".

Who would have guessed that a song about excessive drinking and one night stands would touch so many.

Say's a lot about the members here....lol :D

Again, Thanks to all.

Joe

(Neal, thanks for your time on the contest)

Wow, thanks Alistair. That is quite a compliment. I suppose it is easy to identify my work. Look for a lot of drinking and a character with less than honorable intentions, and I am usually close by (in character.....)

Congratulations on 1st Place, Kim! You had mentioned you hadn't placed this year, and you took care of that in fine fashion! And congratulations to Joe. Another strong showing for you!!

I had Alistair's "Same, Bad Feelings" in at #1, and I had Stars' "The Streets of York" in at #2.

(for the record, I missed an "s" on the word "keep" in mine. I rewrote the line a number of times, and just missed changing it. Something tells me that having that "s" in there..............would not have helped mine at all!) :P

(And, Gordon, I never would have peggeg "The Garbage Man" for yours. Quite a departure from the style I've come to expect from you. Nice writing, all the same.)

Best Regards,

Feegis

Congratulations, Kim!!!

I thought that "Kings and Queens" was the clear leader on the board... i had "Streets of York" neck and neck with it, but after close deliberation, thought yours had the nod... Found the two somewhat similar for some reason, though.

After that... wha!!! i was totally confused.... in a good way - had 11 or 12 that i just could not separate out, i thought they all were very solid and i was close to giving them all the same tie for third. Any given read through, i would compile a significantly different order to them. My master spreadsheet had them stacking up all within about 0.5 points, just all on top of each other.

I liked Joe's humor and it doesn't surprise me one bit that it could vie for first place this month. I liked Maurreen's atmosphere - I heard Lou Reed on this one. I liked the Webb Wilder-like feel of Feegis'. I could really hear Jonie's being sung country style. I really liked Graybeard's entry as well - i just accidentally stumbled upon Keane's "Clear Skies" and after listening to that, i could hear "When I Lost You" being sung quite clearly. And Nevergoback's entry had a nice abstract quality that really made me have to study and think a bit.

I could go on...

I liked Maurreen's atmosphere - I heard Lou Reed on this one.

Thanks. That's interesting. I wouldn't have imagined Lou Reed for that.

It's interesting how different people imagine different music or types of music for the same lyrics.

And how the same song can be interpreted and expressed differently. Lou Reed's version of "This Magic Moment" is such a departure from the original.

Interesting collection of lyrics this month - I too had difficulty seperating them only managing a score range of 7-5 this time round.

Managed to pick the winner - well done KL! :)

Had a seven way tie for 2nd - "Are you staying home tonight" (never would have guessed this was Jonie!), "The Streets of York" (nice idea), "Better than I used to be", "Happy", "Garbage Man", "Set Your Pride aside" (loved the use of "snugger" here!) and "Connection".

Had a nine way tie for third and if I'd had half-point scoring I'd have elevated Gordon for his courage with "Garbage" and to Bernnaby for taking on a very difficult emotive subject with a nice sensitivity.

Thanks Neal and spanishbuddha.

Hey everyone and congratulations Kim!!!! I'm very happy for you! and well done Joeinjax as well :) .

This was a tough one to score, but Alistair managed to score my 10 with Same Bad Feelings, jonie came in second with "Are you Staying Home Tonight?" and I had Joeinjax's "The More Handsome I Get" third, with Kim's "To Dine with Kings and Queens" just a skerric behind them, I also really liked Gordons "Garbage Man".

Great job by everyone this month, and thanks to Neal & SpanishBuddha :) .
