    Lunar Blues

[slow, relaxed, romantic] All we have in common is that moon pasted yellow on the sky All we have in common is that moon pasted yellow on the sky Better get to what we came for 'Fore we tell that yellow moon goodbye. Close the window to the night air The birds will all be singing soon Close the window to the night air The birds will all be singing soon And don't forget to pull the curtains on that sneaky old man in the moon. [a bit faster...] Baby, watch that clock Time's running faster than you fear Baby, watch that clock Time's running faster than you fear Maybe check your almanac It's the shortest evening of the year [vinegar strokes instrumental] [resolution] I will slip out your window and head down the road with the moon I will slip out your window and head down the road with the moon but I won't forget you, honey, or this moon in June too soon... Hard Way Home

A quick sketch today. Will be tweaked over the new few days if I think it's salvageable. I saw the wordcloud @fabkebab made this afternoon from the Lyric of the Year 2017 contest, and had the urge to write something using the cut-up method. I typed up six or seven lines of random words, then cut the lines up individually as words or as phrases. (Didn’t use them all, of course.) And because Earth Day is on April 22nd, I wanted to try coming up with an Earth-related lyric. The result is kind of abstract, especially the last two lines in the verses. 09.04: I've made a number of changes since posting this yesterday. More recent changes in blue. Your thoughts/feedback welcome. Both barrels. Hard Way Home V1 In the late-night shadows I heard a woman say… ‘Come close, my dear, Come watch the river play [Then] kneel, and drink From the gleaming water Lay your hands On the singing stones [For] all of this will soon be gone And it’s going to be a hard way home Oh, such a hard way home’ V2 And I heard her whisper ‘Enough, oh it's enough… Make room, my dear For all the things you love [Now] fill your heart With the birds and forests Flora, fauna The pristine dunes [For] all of this will soon be gone And it’s going to be a hard way home Oh, such a hard way home' Bridge Then the Spirit of Earth stepped forward In a gown of dust and debris She had plastic tangled in her hair Bloodstains on her elbows Oil stains on her feet She had much to tell, and before too long I heard the clang of a tolling bell And I knew the bridge [that] we are on Is about to burn And there’s no time left No time left to turn V3 So watch the river play Then kneel, and drink From the gleaming water Lay your hands On the singing stones Fill your heart With the birds and forests Flora, fauna The pristine dunes [For] all of this will soon be gone And it’s going to be a hard way home Oh, such a hard way home [For] all of this will soon be gone And it’s going to be a hard way home Oh, such a hard way home ©2018 Donna Devine

    Facing Polaris REVISION 3

Liner notes: The North Star or Pole Star (or Lode Star) – aka Polaris – though only the 50th brightest star in the night-time sky, is famous for holding nearly still in our sky while the entire northern sky moves around it. That’s because it’s located nearly at the north celestial pole, the point around which the entire northern sky turns. I was reading about Polaris recently, and suddenly a lyric idea arose, and I coupled it with the notion of two old friends meeting up at a high-school reunion. (in fact I attended one a couple of summers ago. Lines 3-6 in the bridge depict an actual place/atmosphere - my home town. [And there was someone whom I wished had been there, but he wasn't. ]) Genre: Uptempo ballad? Soft rock? Male vocals Is the storyline/message clear. Is it OK being a little abstract? As always, I welcome your constructive critique. Have at it! Update 02.04: I've made a few adjustments. Latest tweaks (on the basis of feedback): Dropped what had been the original first words in line 1 of the verses, plus a word from line 4 in the chorus; tweaked two lines in chorus 3; tweaked line 4, V4. 03.04: Several minor tweaks (in blue), and then I bit the bullet and re-wrote the second half of the chorus. Later tweaks in green. 04.04: Dropped a couple of syllables from the last line of the bridge; tweaked line 5 in the chorus. Please check out the possible alternative bridge (2 lines shorter) at the end of the Revision 3 lyric. Do you feel 'less is more'? LATEST UPDATE: experimenting with a rearranged structure. Much shorter than the original (which is underneath this version). Think I'm going to opt for two versions of the song. And will lock this thread after - I hope - one or two more people come by to offer feedback. Facing Polaris V1 High-school reunion Your smile --- across the canteen And I remember Your light was always the strongest V2 Long walk at midnight You ask if I’d followed my dream And I still wonder Why you stayed with me the longest Chorus Now I'm heading true north Holding to course There, where the guiding star is I’m finally facing Polaris V3 Made lots of big plans But ended up moving too slow Of the both of us Your own journey took you the farthest V4 Yes, there were lovers A few didn’t want to let go But of all of them Oh you... you let go the hardest Chorus Now I'm heading true north Holding to course There, where the guiding star is I’m finally facing Polaris Bridge Here, with the circling sky Above and below me I’m finally ready to see What you once tried to show me Chorus Now I'm heading true north Holding to course There, where the guiding star is I’m finally facing Polaris © 2018 Donna Devine --------------------- Facing Polaris (REV 3) V1 High-school reunion Your smile --- across the canteen And I remember Your light was always the strongest V2 Long walk at midnight You ask if I’d followed my dream And I still wonder Why you'd stayed with me the longest Chorus Spent my life wandering Finally I’m facing Polaris Heading true north Holding to course The earth is steady below me Facing Polaris I’m finally ready To see what you once tried to show me V3 Made lots of big plans But ended up moving too slow And of both of us Your own journey took you the farthest V4 Yes, there were lovers A few didn’t want to let go But of all of them Oh you... you let go the hardest Chorus Spent my life wandering Finally I’m facing Polaris Heading true north Holding to course The earth is steady below me Facing Polaris I’m finally ready To see what you once tried to show me Bridge And here we are now On some strange middle ground On a dusty old street In a small northern town The cry of a loon drifting in From the lake …After so many years I don’t know if it’s chance Or if once again We were destined to meet …But yes, if it’s chance It’s one I’m willing to take Chorus Spent my life wandering Finally I’m facing Polaris Heading true north Holding to course The earth is steady below me Facing Polaris I’m finally ready To see what you once tried to show me © 2018 Donna Devine 04.04: Possible alternative bridge (2 lines shorter). What genre of music do you think it fits?> LYRICS: Slanted eyes and gypsy hair With a mean old crooked-smile glare She’s stupid, she’s sad, and young Swearing with her English tongue And she sings obscure forgotten songs Of lonely love and dancing nights And she laughs a little too long Otherwise she’s sighing Or even worse she’s crying Who had kissed her cowboy mouth? And caused her eyes to burn away And who could make her count the days Until he comes around He had a somber, sweet blue face And a soul of tangled tatted lace He’s crazy; spends his time alone To play his drums and xylophone Drowning out his own heartbeat And he thinks that he’s forgotten He wants to be complete But he knows he can’t defeat The aftertaste of sweetness The ugly burns of summer heat He had kissed her virgin mouth She caused his sense to go away He wanted her but couldn’t stay She hopes he’ll come around You know that he will come around In a month or two I’ll see you And I don’t care if you mind You’ll love me when you taste me I know that I’m your wine You can’t resist my cowboy mouth And you like my gypsy hair And I need your tangled tatted head And I need you to be there I know that you still care I’ll kiss your silent mouth

Comments on arrangement/mix would be appreciated. https://soundcloud.com/paulcanuck/hello-piano Hello Piano Copyright (c) 2017 Tennyson Road Music Hello Piano Mind if I sit here a spell? My head's been through a lot today And my heart has been though hell Your keys feel so familiar in my hands And it's nice to find you waiting here To comfort an old friend Oh, Piano That church today was tough The more I tried to hold my tears The more they wouldn't stop And people searching for a caring word Just echoed "Sorry for your loss" Their eyes fixed on the floor But you know what I came here for.. Let's play a song that lifts us far from here We'll waltz through fonder memories, and stride through kinder years We'll leave this sad and senseless day behind For at least a little time At least a little time... So , Piano Guess I'll close you now and go Though I'd love to spend forever here There are those I must console You've helped to drive these darkened skies away And soothed me with your harmony Just like every time we play So I'll be back here soon, to say.. Hello Piano Let's play a song that lifts us far from here We'll frolics in fond memories, and stride through kinder years We'll leave this sad and senseless world behind For at least a little time At least a little time

    Breakup Ballad lyrics

Hi everyone, I already wrote the melody for this which can be found in the song forum but I am now trying to shave off some of the lyrics to shorten the duration for a deeper emotional impact. Please see if you can help me pick out what to cut Verse 1 Yesterday, I met you in the garden Trailing behind me We stood upon the gravel in the morning Waiting for something Pre-chorus Anything to happen Was it you, was it me? How did this happen How did rain fall on your cheek and shame on mine? When I looked into your eyes I died Verse 2 Yesterday, you told me that you loved me You left me speechless And I, being the fool in all the madness Heard three words, but couldn’t speak them Pre-chorus Everything will happen Wasn’t you, wasn’t me, yet it has happened Rain will fall on your cheek and shame on mine. For a long time Chorus You loved me but I let you go Crushed you deep inside your soul Took you in and threw you out The fire was quietly burning out Loved you but I didn’t know The flame was slowly growing cold My mind was slowly getting old Drew our love to a close, so damaged This is the Breakup Ballad Verse 3 Love was like a letter that you gave me Poured your soul into these phrases But I am good at anything but lying Made promises but couldn’t keep them You held me tight in your arms Yet my heart felt oh, so far Your love’s tearing me apart Into shards Bridge Oh, oh oh oh oh [x4] Pre-chorus Anything can happen Wasn’t you wasn’t me, yet this has happened How did rain fall on your cheek and shame on mine? Chorus You loved me but I let you go Crushed you deep inside your soul Took you in and threw you out The fire was quietly burning out Loved you but I didn’t know The flame was slowly growing cold My mind was slowly getting old Drew our love to a close And I’m acting fine hope you won’t know Wear a smile just for show I see you’re at an all time low But please my darling don’t lose hope Someday she will come along A girl who might have heard this song before And will not sing to you This melody ‘bout what went wrong with us We have both been damaged This is our Breakup Ballad Verse 4/ ending Yesterday, I left you in the garden My head and my heart were aching Nobody told me it would hurt Doing the heartbreaking

    We follow the old ways

Here's a lyric that I wrote towards the start of this year. It's influenced by a true life tragedy that happened in a small village in Ireland where a fishing boat sank with the loss of all on board apart from one. My uncle was one of a number of local men who went out in their boats to help with the search mission and he actually discovered the body of one of the victims. Very sad and each life lost has a story behind it. Appreciate that it's quite long but have a musician who has said he'll work on it and hope it will hold the listener's attention. Any feedback welcome We follow the old ways (Verse 1) We set sail from a little village pier Heading to the great big sea, Going with the flow We follow the old ways. I said goodbye without a tear Laughing, you just waved at me, Going with the flow We follow the old ways. (Chorus) Bring the nets in Set sail for a safe port Ride the waves home. Loved ones Wait for us there, we know. (Verse 2) Days at sea to catch our haul Dredging luckies from the deep, Lighthouse flicker glow We follow the old ways. Days away from your side Feel like years to me, Lighthouse flicker glow We follow the old ways. (Verse 3) Holding course against the storm Batten everything down, Seconds seem so slow But we follow the old ways. Holding hands upon the sand Heartbeats the only sound, Seconds seem so slow We follow the old ways. (Chorus) Bring the nets in Set sail for a safe port Ride the waves home. Loved ones Wait for us there, we know. (Bridge) The storm called to take our lives Breaking bones on the rocks, I tasted its bitterness But clung to the sweetness of us (Verse 4) All hands lost apart from me I swam to the shore, Wild did the wind blow But we follow the old ways. Your scan pinned close to my heart Our baby on the way, Wild did the wind blow We follow the old ways. (Verse 5) All hands lost apart from me They sank under the waves, Wild did the wind blow But we follow the old ways. Your scan pinned close to my heart No words can truly say, Wild did the wind blow We follow the old ways. (Chorus) Bring the nets in Set sail for a safe port Ride the waves home. Loved ones Wait for us there, we know.
  15. Got a bit of help from some friends on this one. Main nits so far have been "stole" vs. "stolen" and the spoken bit gets drowned out in the mix. I'll fix those things - any other issues? Thanks in advance for any comments
  16. Whilst not about today's terrible news from Manchester, this lyric has certainly been influenced by the sense of sadness that atrocity has generated. Heartbreaking to hear about. Not sure what the best title for the song is so have gone with 2 possible options. I originally had a chorus and a more flowery outro but have stripped the song back. The story is told from present back to the past. I see it as a slow singer songwriter ballad. The sorrow echo / I wish it was not so (Verse 1) Underneath the branches The river meanders I can almost see The sorrow echo. Flowers gently carried Caught up in the flow Whispers on the breeze "I wish it was not so". (Verse 2) Just beneath the bridges The blackness stretches Hard to imagine The sorrow echo. Children gently playing How were they to know Cries across the distance "I wish it was not so". (Verse 3) Underneath the excuses Evil purpose festers Men choose to make The sorrow echo. Their own children sleeping Whilst they pack and go Murderous intentions "I wish it was not so". (Bridge) Little girls should dance under trees Turn cartwheels in the summer's breeze Wear flowers weaved into their hair Not grieved for as loved ones despair. (Outro) Flowers gently carried The sorrow echoes Children gently playing The sorrow echoes ...
  17. My entry for the April contest. See this as a ballad, either with piano and/or acoustic guitar. One thing I did with this one that was a bit different was trying vary the chorus - e.g. the 2nd chorus is a repeat of the 1st but with some additional lines to build on the story. Those long lost days (Intro) Counting the years out The days we've spent together, The snow ambushes down My mood fits this chill weather. (Verse 1) Present circumstances have got me to thinking And these reflections that I'm having Lend themselves well to drinking. As the beer bottles pile up The past's boundaries seem to haze, I peer back through tinted glass At all those long lost days. (Chorus) I remember she bought running shoes And we ran through the city, I remember the blush of her youth I recall she looked so pretty. I remember I remember I recall us being so happy But maybe that's just a trick of my mind? (Verse 2) Partial reminiscence has got me to wishing That I could serenade that girl again Start up where we left off kissing. As the train carriages filled up Our passions blazed, I peer back along the lines At all those long lost days. (Chorus) I remember she bought running shoes And we ran through the city, I remember the blush of her youth I recall she looked so pretty. I remember cutting a corner Some winged beast nearly hit us, I recall us bunched over in laughter As that heron flew off. I remember I remember I recall us being so happy But maybe that's just a trick of my mind? (Bridge) Now we have candid conversations Stripping bare the truth, Painful revelations As the avalanche cuts loose. It seems my memories betray me Smiles that I thought were there, Were painted on And all along, We were just one station from despair. (Chorus) I remember she bought running shoes And we ran through the city, I remember the blush of her youth I recall she looked so pretty. I remember so many little things But they’ll vanish like melting snowflakes, I recall us huddled in a bus stop Carefree days in cafes eating cakes. I remember I remember I recall us being so happy But maybe that's just a trick of my mind? Surely that wasn't all just a trick of my mind …

    I Got This

Hi guys - this is fresh from the lyrics shop. A short country ballad. Comments and suggs are welcome. Paul I Got This Copyright (c) Tennyson Road Productions Your Dad took me aside To ask if I'd provide The life his princess ought to get I started to reply But you overheard, and you sighed, and said: "I Got This" Two years down the line Our tiny baby crying You grew so tired from watching it My new role seemed so strange I'd never done a diaper change, but I said "I Got This" I guess that's what life is A steady string of tests No-one can ever stop it When one of us gets overwhelmed The other takes the helm, and says: "I Got This" The year my brother died I cried, and cried.. and I cried And I couldn't climb on top of it But you held me through my pain In yet another way of sayin' "I Got This" I guess that's what life is A steady stream of stress No-one can put a stop to it, But for our love to succeed Three words are all it needs "I Got This" Honey, our love will succeed Just three words - that's all it needs: "I Got This"

Started with the first lines then went from there IT'S OVER Being mooned when you drop your pants Sorry babe but that isn't romance It's great that you drink with the guys But mooning your wife just isn't wise Might've been cute when we were kids But older me says that we are quits Yes it's over It's over It's over I used think about what went wrong And wondered why we don't get along We started as peaches and cream But Now all I do is hold back screams I don't think that one thing blew it Thing is I grew up and you didn't Yes it's over It's over It's over But it's not so bad we're ending It's not a bad message we're sending It might not be consensual But our divorce would be sensible You can have a baby sitter And I'll go look for something deeper Yes it's over It's over It's over If you didn't hear me I'll tell you again Yes it's over It's over It's over It's over version 2 IT'S OVER Being mooned when you drop your pants Sorry babe but that isn't romance It's great that you drink with the guys But mooning your wife just isn't wise Might've been cute when we were kids But older me says that we are quits Yes it's over It's over It's over That dutch oven you did last night Well it didn't set my heart a light You think it was companionship But what it was is you let one rip But not just your bed fart blew it Thing is I grew up and you didn't Yes it's over It's over It's over But it's not so bad we're ending Cause it's 'bout time we stopped pretending It might not be consensual But a divorce would be sensible You can go buy a game console And I will go find a kindred soul Yes it's over It's over It's over If you didn't hear me I'll tell you again Yes it's over It's over It's over It's over

  22. Hi This is my first submission to this forum and is a song that I wrote a while back. I only recently got around to re-recording it Let me know what you think GOING DOWNHILL I felt strong With you by my side Full of power Full of pride Used to be incorruptible Made of steel indestructible Never thought I'd see the day Watched you kick The stool away Put my head Into your noose Now I guess I'm just hanging loose Going downhill So place your bets How long can I last On booze and cigarettes

    Capitalist Child [Folk/Rock]

Wrote a little ditty this morning, decided to share it. I'm looking for general critique. This is sung in a rhythmic, lurching style using break-beats with a repetitive two line melody for the verses. The interlude is sung in a smooth, very drawn out rising melody in a different scale and key than the rest of the song. [VERSE] Feathered quill - pistol both just toys Write a speech shoot a leech - games for boys Words and bullets they both draw blood One can tint a river and the other start a flood Time is your mother then your father is death One takes your life and the other takes your last breath [X2] [INTERLUDE] Take me far away To lands where demons play Red eyes all they say Is that I am safe I am safe [VERSE] Light a match - good catch set ‘im ablaze Flesh that burns fills skies with haze This is what happens to rebels in tears Nod to your mother - I’m still not her worst fear Take out your pocketbook and pay me off Green dollar bills still I’m drinkin’ from a pig’s trough [X2] [CHORUS] F**k with the system capitalist child Flirt with the money get yourself defiled Take what you’re offered and you’re satisfied Promise what you don’t have - say you tried Cut your pretty wings before you take another fall Landing’s pretty soft when you’ve already lost it all [X2] [INTERLUDE] Take me far away To lands where demons play Red eyes all they say Is that I am safe I am safe [VERSE] Kingsfoil good soil dig right here Healing in the Earth will synthesize fear Swords and horses are chanting for war Ready the boats there’s bodies on the other shore You knew my father you’re darkness’ seed With enough chains we all are free [X2] [INTERLUDE] Take me far away To lands where demons play Red eyes all they say Is that I am safe I am safe [VERSE] Believe in the devil and you’ll find god Fires of hell draw steel to shod Break your mind and you’ll find peace Madness spreads like a pile of grease Don’t send me pity if you don’t got faith Don’t say he’s gone if I see his wraith [X2] [CHORUS] F**k with the system capitalist child Flirt with the money get yourself defiled Take what you’re offered and you’re satisfied Promise what you don’t have - say you tried Cut your pretty wings before you take another fall Landing’s pretty soft when you’ve already lost it all [X2] [INTERLUDE/OUTRO] Take me far away To lands where demons play Red eyes all they say Is that I am safe I am safe
