Lyricist, Composer or Both?

Musical Influences?

  1. Anyone have any examples of awkward lyrics - either timing wise in a song, for the singer, or in the lyrics themselves? Here are three of my 'favourites'... Elton John (music) and Bernie Taupin's (lyrics) magnificent Candle In The Wind - listen at time 1:27 "Hollywood created a superStar.... " - 9 syllables (nine! - is it a record?) crammed in, before the strong beat of the bar on "Star" Coldplay's "Vida La Viva" - listen at time 2:06 "RevolutionAries wait..." - only 4 syllables crammed in this time, before the strong beat on "Aries". Chris Martin makes this seem seamless here. I struggled with this one gigging this song in a covers band. REM "Imitation of Life" - just a completely (imho) awful lyric line here, in an other wise great song - listen at 1:16 - "The greatest thing since bread came sliced"... I guess this makes the case for (not always) improving our own awkward lyrics I'm sure there must be even 'greater' examples out there of either timing (cramming in lyrics) or horrendous lyric lines in themselves out there...
